No, A Light that Never Comes still wins. I wasn't really expecting much based on the interviews/teasers so luckily I didn't get disappointed. I admit that I like the "heavier" side of LP, however I appreciate a good song even it's a mellow one. In fact, Breaking the Habit is still one of my favorite songs even if it's borderline pop. Heavy, though, sounds like a uninspired and desperate attempt to be on the radio again. The chorus melody is decent but that first verse is atrocious. I can't believe they spent all of 2014 talking "trash" about the generic-over saturated market of indie/alternative rock bands which led them to do THP. Well, not a lot has changed yet they decide to put out a song (and possibly an album) that fits that description. Anyway, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and wait until the album is released, however, my expectations are as low as they can be considering Mike said Heavy is a good representation of the record. Even if Breaking the habit was by all means pop.. it still had ingenuity to it.. and a refreshing original sound.. this sounds like your basic radio song. Coizu Posted February 16, 2017 Share Posted February 16, 2017 I think the song is actually pretty good, if it wasn't a Linkin Park song but a random pop act who performed it. For me it sounds like a track, that was produced for a random pop act, so they can put it on their album. It seems like it was constructed in a way so that it fits perfectly into the sound we have on radios nowadays, without taking any risks, trying out new stuff or just putting any personal touch to it. I mean all those things in general, not in the context of LP, because it is definitely a risk for Linkin Park, it is something new for them, and since it was written, produced and performed by the band I guess they definitely put their personal touch to it. I am perfectly fine with pop music and I listen to a lot of pop music, but from Linkin Park I expect something new and interesting. That could be new and interesting sounds, blending different genres together, going away from the norm or in short: experimenting. But this song just sounds like a working formula being applied. There is not a single element to the sound of the song that gets me really excited and interested. Even when I disliked a Linkin Park song in the beginning (probably the best example would be The Catalyst), I still felt excited because it was interesting and it felt new and refreshing. That's just not the case in this song and that's kinda sad. It's a pretty generic sound with a generic song structure. With that said, in general I still prefer a song (or in the worst case a whole album) I don't love because someone tried something different and new, instead of getting the same old stuff over and over again. I will listen to the song, because it's a random good pop song in my opinion and not because it is a Linkin Park song that blew me away. hellomoto170 Posted February 16, 2017 Share Posted February 16, 2017 I love Linkin Park trying new things and I like every album they've ever made - my favourite will always be their old stuff but with every album since then, listening in full, I've appreciated and liked them for the most part. So new, different, risky, that's fine...But this just sounds like a really generic pop song. It sounds rushed, no intro, hardly any progression... I don't know what goes into deciding what should be a lead single but presumably the band considers this to be one of the better songs on the record? That kinda scares me...Then again, if this is just a lead single to appeal to the pop-y masses and the rest of the album is more LP... Cool with me. It's a pretty bad performance from Chester and I mean that in the sense that he has every rock all star band knocking on his door begging him to play with them (STP, Velvet Revolver, Kings of Chaos, all the cover bands) and he's being utilized in a very odd way. I know LP doesn't make solely rock music but goodness, it's a bad vocal performance here. Kiiara sounds fantastic, however. We went from Mike saying he basically wanted to "save rock music" and all that with THP to a total transformation in sound lol. Billboard said "Why did you make a top 40 pop radio song?" and Mike says "I certainly wouldn't describe it that way"...as if he's like, not admitting what it really is. Not my type of music, I didn't think they could make a worse single than Burn It Down, but let's see what the rest of the album sounds like. Chester sounds terrible too much post production. The Girl sounds nice. I'll buy the album for the collection but I don't think it'll get much play time judging by Mikes comments Alas I'll just be glad them to see them tour again. Hopefully in the UK! I wasn't expecting to love it, since I'm not at all a fan of the genre, but it just seemed so generic. The first verse is probably the worst vocals Chester has ever done. You can hear Chester delivering some powerfully emotional singing in the 1st verse and on the bridge. I'm dissapointed by the length though, I thought it deserved an extra breakdown or explosive outro or something like that. I'm so excited for the rest of the album!! I have to say that it hits hardest from a lyrical point of view. 2016 ended on such a hard note for me (my dog passing away, mom and brother in a car accident, parents talking about divorce, etc) that this sinks into "the feels" completely. After being up on his high horse and taking shots at the pop scene he makes something like this. Makes his whole attitude and persona seem manufactured.
