Review: Mike Shinoda's New PT Vinyl Tracks

Recommended Posts

Mike has said quite a few times that Post Traumatic was his journey out of the darkness, so putting a huge focus on his immediate grief surrounding Chester would sort of conflict with that. The first few songs on the album are about that grief (namely the EP songs and NMSA), but most of the album was meant to be him trying to find ways to move forward and make something out of a tragedy.

Great point. Mike has said a few times that Crossing A Line is the middle of the record, and it was there intentionally, because the way that he sequenced the album, was that the first half was darker and looking back, while the second half, starting with Crossing A Line, was coming out of that darkness.

The first 7 tracks are pretty dark. Place To Start, while it doesn't sound as dark as the others instrumentally, has some somewhat dark lyrics, with Mike questioning his career, his path ahead, everything. It was also a OML demo that he wanted originally to open up OML, but they went with NCSM as time went on, he said something like that in Kerrang about that song, so it was probably dark for him to revisit a song that Chester probably had heard at one point, etc.. Over Again, we know it's a dark song, talking about Chester's tribute show, and also Mike's career, etc. Watching As I Fall deals with Mike struggling emotionally and it's a pretty straight forward track. Nothing Makes Sense Anymore is dark as hell, lyrically, it doesn't have much ''hope'' in the lyrics, it's basically about being lost in life, at least to me. About You might be the darkest, or close to it. Basically the song is saying that even when Mike tries to write about something else, or do something else, people will just associate it with Chester. Blackbear also worked on OML with LP so it probably opened up some old scars bringing back memories of Mike and Chester, etc. Brooding has always been a super dark sounding instrumental to me. Promises I Can't Keep is also kind of dark, talking about how he never saw the band coming unglued, or being broken apart, and how he now has to face that going forward, there will be some promises that he can't keep.

1) 13 year old article about scuffle in contract

2) Chester saying he may put out songs he whipped up on his own rather than try and get DBS set up again

3) Stretch Armstrong, dude. Also, would like to point out the top review of the album was written either before, or right as Battle Symphony came out, for a grand total of 2 songs.

I guess I'm missing something bc these links all seem like stretching

I think Chester's lack of involment with One More Light also had to do with this:

While working on the album, Chester went through depression and alcoholic problems, one of his close friends died and his stepfather had cancer. He suffered a three-day relapse and went through an outpatient treatment program. "I started reaching out and talking about my feelings. The next thing I know, I wasn't alone in the conversation in my head. I was inviting people into the conversation and getting feedback and working through this stuff. At the end of the process, I was surprised I was ever in this place. I was like, 'Wow, I can't see myself getting in that place again because I have such good friends'. I have a beautiful wife, great kids, awesome job."

I'm not sure who the friend is, but let's not forget Scott Weiland passed away right after Linkin Park entered the studio. He was like Chester's hero and they had become friends over the years. Chester was clearly upset when the news came out.

"Talking To Myself" might not be credited to Chester, but the song is literally about how his wife felt while he was going through all this stuff. I guess "Nobody Can Save Me" deals with Chester's struggles at the time as well. Then you have "Heavy" (one of the songs he actually wrote) which is about his state of mind in this specific period.

TTM is a great example that just because Chester isn't a primary writer of a song, doesn't mean that he didn't help with lyrics and melodies. It's shown many times throughout LPTV/LPUTV/Making Of's, etc. and said during interviews.

Good points, though. Chester said that 2015 was the worst year of his life and 2016 wasn't that great, either, during this interview for OML. https://i.imgur.com/FJppy9i.pngScott Weiland also passing was definitely hard on Chester. Scott and Chester's weren't close friends, as Scott revealed during an interview after Chester joined the band, but still, Chester looked up to him growing up and stuff. And then his Step Dad died, he says in that interview posted above that someone else close to him attempted suicide, etc. On top of that he started drinking again, etc. like you pointed out. And then in 2017, Chris Cornell's suicide was a huge blow to Chester. I'm not sure if that was the final blow for him, because we don't know other issues that he was going through in his personal life, but you never know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfoV2L2MkQ4 He also talks here about how all of his relationships in life were failing and that he told his therapist that he just wanted to die or not feel anything.

Some dark stuff. Chester had depression. And with suicide, you're never going to know the answer, it's text book, everyone struggles with that after losing someone to suicide. But if you look at all of those things together, plus probably way more that we don't know/shouldn't know, there you go.

Good Day guys :)

I've been taking a closer look at the band and the entire situation and came across these as well. Some strange things going on here. Can we state that LP would have been free from their Warner contract after OML? Very coincidental that Chester was already working on solo stuff. I also remember Mike talking about maybe going solo after OML before that album came out. Which of course, he did!

What is your point here though lol. Like are you saying what I think?

I never heard that about Mike wanting to go solo. Or Chester. They wrote music all the time on their own throughout their entire career.

Mike was asked in an interview (can't remember which one) if there will be some Fort Minor shows after the OML tour. And he answered: "Yeah. Maybe". That's all I know.

And I guess it would have been quite normal for the band to take some rest after an album and a tour while Mike can't take a break and is doing FM or other stuff. Maybe Chester planned the same for the time before LP starts working on an eight album.

Mike was doing FM solo shows in 2015 and he also put out Welcome, etc. LOL.

Lift Off and I.O.U. were also written for FM, before Chester even passed.

People are stupid and will say anything to make it seem like LP was about to break up and Chester killed himself for some stupid reason of whatever they have in their head. I hate people like that. All these conspiracy theory idiots like the guy who asked Mike during an interview if he believed that ''sinister hands'' were involved in Chester's death. Or the idiots who think Chester and Chris Cornell were going to expose some pedophile ring so they got ''suicided'' to keep from saying anything. These people truly are the worst.

Chester and Mike always are working on music. Chester wrote all the time, even during the OML era. It is well known throughout their career that Mike wrote songs about Chester, that's just how good their friendship and connection is as songwriters. That connection reminds me of the story Mike told in Vienna this touring cycle about how they created Waiting For The End. Chester wrote the chorus and it was just Mike and Chester in the room writing the song together. Epic. Anyway even if Chester isn't a songwriter it doesn't mean the song isn't about him. Look at Nobody Can Save Me and Talking To Myself.

The reason Chester didn't write as much on OML is because his life was falling apart around him. He even had to go to rehab, which the band kept completely quiet and withheld from the public, which I agree with them doing. They always had not only LP's best interests first but also Chester's. I remember the FB Live that Mike did in the studio for OML and he replied to a question of "Where is Chester?" and Mike said something that was so obscure it stuck with me for months afterward, just something like, "I don't know, I haven't seen him in a while." At that point, I said WOW that's weird that Mike doesn't know where the hell he is. But he did know, he was in rehab and he was just keeping it quiet. If Mike had said "Ah yeah he was in the other day and he doesn't come in every day but I'll see him soon" then I wouldn't have ever second guessed it lol

Side note: The guest writers on OML don't bother me much as it was just one of those things LP does sometimes as an experiment. After writing a ton of albums in a ton of different genres over the years, and refining their songwriting approach with Rick Rubin in 2006 (IMO which created one of their very best albums in MTM), they just wanted to see how others wrote songs and see new approaches. A learning experiment, if you will. I highly doubt going into future albums past OML that they would have continued that trend. I'm alright with it OML because the album did end up being a pretty solid pop album and the songs translate exceptionally well live (no surprise since LP is a modern top tier live act).

Go back and look at Mike's social media posts and read his interviews during the Post Traumatic era. He wrote Fort Minor songs in summer 2017 specifically, and one of those was Lift Off with Machine Gun Kelly in Berlin. He already had presented the idea to Linkin Park of him releasing solo Fort Minor songs "later in the OML cycle", which I presume meant either after Japan or during a break in the 2018 cycle. But most likely the end of 2017. Linkin Park gave a thumbs up to it, as they always have. It's the same thing as he did with Welcome in 2015. He may have even done some FM shows again.

Dead By Sunrise was set for a comeback in fall 2017. Frank Zummo confirmed that he, Chester, and Ryan and Amir were going to perform some secret popup shows in warehouses around LA for fun. Would Chester have dropped more solo material? It seems unlikely as his release format was an album versus individual songs BUT you never know.

Linkin Park was booked as a headliner for Download Australia's inaugural performance in March 2018, in Melbourne. The OML cycle was going to keep going into 2018.

With all of this said, if Chester wouldn't have passed away, we would have had Linkin Park, Fort Minor, and Dead By Sunrise all coexisting at the exact same time.

I have no idea what the details are about LP's deal with Warner. But I do know in the statement about Chester, Linkin Park said he "talked excitedly about the years ahead", meaning they were discussing plans for the band for future years. LP was on top of their game on a MASSIVE (and massively successful) world tour for One More Light. It was a very exciting time that ended in such a horrible tragedy. I'll always look back on that time (March-July 2017) with fond memories of LP kicking ass on stage, performing some amazing shows to huge crowds, and gearing up for an epic upcoming USA tour.

  • 3 months later...

He was not referring to any LP music, and the "words" were not referring to anything Chester wrote or sung, according to Mike himself. The song is apparently about another artist's music that he didn't fully understand until he lost Chester. He did not say exactly what band/artist or what song.

Do we have any information who mixed the songs? I am especially interested in Prove Me Wrong but apparently no information is available.

Both were mixed by Mike. Also "What The Words Meant" was Co-Produced by two guys from Basecamp (Aaron C. Harmon, Jordan Reyes).

That explains why they sound totally different in terms of mixing than the rest of the album. Good to know, thanks for the information.

The album was mixed by four different people (including four songs mixed by Mike), and Basecamp also co-produced About You, so I'm not sure what your reasoning for saying that is.

On About You, Basecamp is mentioned as "additional production", on What The Words Meant as "co-produced".

It was just my impression that the rest of the album sounded more consistent (I actually thought that it was only mixed by one guy, which I was wrong about) while especially Prove Me Wrong sounds different to me.
