Actually, I've always seen that song as extremely dark, lyrically. To me, it's about accepting your fate for what it is. Kind of like What I've Done, but more accepting it knowing that it will destroy you, instead of accepting it and trying to change it. I'm not sure if Chester wrote the lyrics for Nobody Can Save Me, but if he did, it's pretty concerning. You wonder if perhaps his addiction to alcohol was an influence on the lyrics, but I'm not sure about that. I know during the BBC interview in 2007 he said Given Up was written about how much he hated his life when he was drinking. It's probably not as direct.
