LPLStaff Posted December 2 Posted December 2 A new interview with Ryu touches on Fort Minor, his relationship with Mike, and more. Interesting listen! Quote
martinez Posted December 2 Posted December 2 Really dope interview! It is answering on some questions I got since 2005 and since Welcome release. As a thank you I can't help it but to mention that Ryu had released his new solo album on November 14, called "Medium Raw". Quote
bloodbath Posted December 2 Posted December 2 Man, Ryu is one of those unlucky guys, he tried several times but he should have more success Quote
martinez Posted December 2 Posted December 2 Added two more videos. There is a couple more also very very interesting where Ryu talks about GBC, SOB, he also talks that they never got paid for their song used on Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2. EDIT: added one more about leaving Machine Shop. Quote
Sabi Posted December 2 Posted December 2 Yeah, I was listening to all of these interview clips, and Ryu’s saying some really interesting stuff. I remember being a huge fan of their 2 tracks on the Need for Speed: Most Wanted soundtrack. It was around the time Fort Minor’s album dropped, and I was sure they were gonna blow up off those two, but obviously, that didn’t happen. Quote
Capacity Posted December 2 Posted December 2 Just watched the interview and I'm honestly impressed by Ryu's maturity here. His sense of accountability, instead of playing the victim or throwing shade at Mike over the 'Welcome' misunderstanding or the money issues was great. This phrase: I did it to myself by expecting others to do the work for me. It's a very grown-up take. I'll watch the rest of the interview afterwards. Quote
LPLStaff Posted December 2 Author Posted December 2 Really good stuff by Ryu here. At the same time you can't help but feel bad for him and SOB for how the industry/Warner did them. Reseda Beach is a badass album and they literally said, na, we aren't going to promote Second to None for you. That's wild - that should have had a video, promo, they play more shows and drop Reseda Beach in 2007. Can't help but want to see a Fort Minor reunion with SOB one day. It's not Mike's style to look backwards but it would really pop off with the fans... Quote

I was just listening to Second after many years its basically a FM song the chorus sounds very linkinpark w the guitar. Quote
SinisterNL Posted December 2 Posted December 2 I've been listening to SoB and Ryu since FM. And Styles of Beyond is an OG hip-hop duo, their music very well written and straight from LA. If you listen to Ryu's albums you just hear the classic 90s hip-hop. It's not rap, it's hip-hop. Quote

I especially like when he talks about getting his own bag as his own man. And how he’s going to get that anyways whether Mike helps him or not. Quote
bloodbath Posted December 3 Posted December 3 What happened exactly with Reseda Beach? Warner just said said "I don't like this stuff" and left SOB with nothing? Quote
LPLStaff Posted December 3 Author Posted December 3 Watch the videos above - he talks about Mike brought SOB to Machine Shop (under Warner), then the folks at Warner all changed that liked SOB. They fired a ton of people at Warner. The new people didn't like SOB. And likely didn't like Holly Brook, any of the other stuff Mike brought. And bam, adios... they shelved Reseda Beach. And didn't want to help promote Second to None. The whole situation is a shame and SOB got screwed royally. Quote

Like Mike let everyone go (or that was what i thought back then) and then she wrote that hit with Rihanna and Eminem. Quote
YRQRM0 Posted December 3 Posted December 3 At least Second To None got into Transformers, I probably would not know it without that. Quote

martinez Posted December 5 Posted December 5 Ap was mentioning Mike a few times in the interviews, Mike was in one of his videos, he mentioned him on the "Get Busy Commettee - Uzi Does It", and I have thoughts about it, but after seeing this video, I'm not sure anymore if my thoughts are correct. It kind of feels like he changed a bit what he was thinking about Mike. Or maybe I'm wrong about it. Quote

I was wondering if Fort Minor might ever come back with S.O.B., Demigodz, GBC, etc., but after those interviews with Ryu and Apathy it sounds like Mike won't work with them anymore. Even if he revives Fort Minor, it probably won't include those guys. Quote

When Mike brought back Fort Minor briefly in 2015 and was working on again in 2017 it was a different thing, still great but different. He was not looking to collaborate with those same people so I doubt he will ever do it again. Fort Minor might be back in the future, I would bet on it, but it still won't be like it was in 05-06. mattyice318 Posted December 6 Posted December 6 We gonna talk about how Mike told Ryu he'd be on Welcome and asked for a verse (same format as Rising Tied) then acted like Ryu always knew it wasn't going to be on the final? bad vibes, ryu always felt mature and real and doesn't paint mike in a good light all things considered Quote

That's not what I would call mature. It's just his version of the story anyway so I wouldn't expect him to be impartial Quote
Qwerty18 Posted December 6 Posted December 6 (edited) I have tons of respect for Mike, one of my main inspiration. But no one is perfect, and everyone can mess up a bit some times. If what Ryu said is exactly how it happened, then yes, it was not the coolest move from Mike. It could simply be he changed his mind about the verse, or wasnt a fan, but didn't dare to say it straight to Ryu , or forgot, or whatever, and kind of found an excuse for it (the remix) later. No one is always 100% transparent about everything. And again, we dont know, so no point looking further into it. It is 10 years old, case is long closed. Edited December 6 by Qwerty18 Quote
