Linkin Park is currently in the studio writing a new album. After their European Tour ended on September 6th, they entered the studio back home in LA about a week later to start working on the followup to The Hunting Party. Chester quit Stone Temple Pilots over the summer to focus on Linkin Park full time, but finished his touring obligations with them in September and October. Currently, Linkin Park is working at Larrabee Studios again, where The Hunting Party was recorded.

Release Date

Studio Updates

- The band is working on writing melodies and lyrics first, for the first time, then they decide what style or genre to play the song in. For Hybrid Theory and Meteora, the band would lay down a completed instrumental, and then write melodies and lyrics on top of that. For Minutes To Midnight, A Thousand Suns, Living Things, and The Hunting Party, Linkin Park would lay down "donna"/scratch vocals (as heard in some of the LP Underground demos) over songs as they were writing them....simultaneously doing vocals and the instrumentals at the same time. Guests

- There appears to be collaborations happening again, like the last album.

- The first collaboration was in London around the time of the Fort Minor London show, between Mike and an unknown artist. "Later Shinoda reveals he’s already "starting to work out some ideas” for its follow-up. In fact, writing sessions are planned in London for a collaboration with an artist he’s remaining tight-lipped about. “I have no idea what it’ll sound like yet. It won’t sound like ‘The Hunting Party’,” he says firmly. “We like to surprise people.” Source: NME

- Mike and Martin Garrix collaborated on new music in November 2015. Source: Social media from both artists Mike then said the session with Martin Garrix was nothing more than meeting with him and throwing out ideas. Source: LPA podcast
- Jon Greene from the English band The Bonfires has been spotted in the studio at Larrabee with Linkin Park, in January 2016. Source: Twitter

Other Updates

- Mike wants to do some projects with fansites like LPLive, LPAssociation, etc in 2016, possibly related to the release of the album. Source: LPA podcast

Feel free to add information that you find about the new album, and we will add it to the post!

I think the timeframe will be similar to the ATS era

I agree. They said that the album will be released in the second half of 2016, so... I'm expecting a tour maybe in August or September to promote the album, and the album being released somewhere in September or October.

Hey everyone,

We’re hard at work making some new music for you. The six of us have been more than enthusiastic about how this album is shaping up, and I’m happy to share this update!

As usual during an early stage, we don’t know a ton about where the songs will end up. They change shapes over and over during the writing process, and we usually write dozens of songs, which push each other in and out of contention for a spot on the final album.

One thing that’s making this album unique (so far) is the process. When we started out as a band, we often started our songs focusing almost entirely on the musical “track," with no vocals until the end of the process. The vocals were usually forced into the existing chords and structure of the song, which often times meant that some ideas we loved never "made it," because good words or good melodies never showed up, even though we liked the music. Over time, we’ve started incorporating vocals earlier and earlier in the process, usually in the form of skat “la la la” vocals and gibberish words. Many of those demos have been shared as a part of our LPU albums.

But this time, we decided to go even further, and write more “traditionally." We’re starting with the most fundamental parts of the songs—the words and vocal melodies—and completely fleshing out those ideas before we begin working out the music. That means right now, we’re only focusing on the foundations upon which the songs are built. Some songs are just one piano, keyboard, or guitar, and a vocal. The concept and words of the song are front and center. We’ve even invited some new friends into the studio to bounce ideas off (more to come on that later).

So far, the new approach is paying off. The new stuff is really powerful, and the stories and emotional content is really shining through. We’re going to continue on this path until we feel like we’ve got more than enough material to begin the “sound” phase.

I’ve been posting some live video streams of studio days up on the Facebook page, so keep an eye out for those updates. And we’ll try to write some more updates as things go. This album is going to be insane, and we’re looking forward to taking you on the journey as we make it.

Best,
Mike

Why would it be an LP track? I guess that Ethan Mates is mixing for more bands than just LP, and there's nothing that (I'm aware of) that says it is for the LP material.

The handwriting matches up perfectly with numerous other studio track boards we've seen over the years. Ethan's been in the studio with LP since the start of this album process, and he typically only works on one project at a time. The presence of the MPC and other DJ equipment is pretty much a dead giveaway too. No way this isn't LP-related.
