  1. I have seen that some people think that the song is about Chester. At first, I thought that too, but now that I've thought more about it, it's most likely not about him. I have 2 ways of interpreting what the song is truly about:

    1. The song is about not letting the memories of loved ones and those you care about (like friends and family) go away and to remember those memories of them long after their deaths.

    2. The song is about a friend that hasn't been gone from your life for so long, yet, you still keep the memories you had with them with you, despite that friend not being a part of your life for so long.

There can definitely be more ways to interpret what the meaning of the song is, but those are the 2 interpretations I have come up with for what the meaning of the song is.

Just for the safety (because not everyone want to see any spoilers) added a spoiler tag.

That's perfectly fine, lol. I still can't figure out those two lines in the 2nd verse, though. Even when I slow the song down, I can't completely tell what he's saying during those lines (the ones with the "[?]").

  3. Since there's this topic now, I guess I'll share the lyrics now (of what I could understand):

    Spoiler

    [Verse 1: Mike Shinoda]
I’m supposed to be running, I’m just catching my breath
Saying congratulations, terrified of what’s next
Everything is exploding, twenty hours, no sleep
Three o’ clock in the morning, lying there in the street

[Pre-Chorus: Mike Shinoda & Emily Armstrong]
Breaking our backs for a pile of sand
Just to have it all falling out of our hands
Maybe it all gets lost in the end

[Chorus: Emily Armstrong & Mike Shinoda]
    But I’ll remember you
No matter where our ways may take us to
And even when the memories slip away
Time will test you, I won’t let you fade

    [Verse 2: Mike Shinoda]
This is supposed to feel different, why do I feel the same?
Tryna get with the [?] (river?), I’m all over the place
And the voices in my head say that what was next might just be the last
We don’t want to admit that we are never going back
[?] the distance, from the present to the past
And don’t know how we went from where we’re at

[Pre-Chorus: Mike Shinoda & Emily Armstrong]
Breaking our backs for a pile of sand
Just to have it all falling out of our hands
Maybe it all gets lost in the end

[Chorus: Emily Armstrong & Mike Shinoda]
    But I’ll remember you
No matter where our ways may take us to
And even when the memories slip away

[Post Chorus: Mike Shinoda & Emily Armstrong]
Breaking our backs for a pile of sand
Just to have it all falling out of our hands
Maybe it all gets lost in the end

[Bridge: Mike Shinoda, Emily Armstrong, Mike Shinoda & Emily Armstrong]
I know I’m the one that you wanna forget
    But I’ll remember you
No matter where our ways may take us to
And even when the memories slip away
Time will test you (Time will test you)
Time will test you, I won’t let you fade

[Outro: Emily Armstrong & Mike Shinoda, Mike Shinoda]
    I won’t let you fade
    I won’t let you-u-u fade

What was next might just be the last
We don’t want to admit that we are never going back
    (I won’t let you fade)
[?] in the distance, from the present to the past
And don’t know how we went from where we’re at
    (I won’t let you)

I know they do, i was asking for audio clips of the clicking and possible misalignment and 808 bass and synth cause I can't hear what he's talking about

I know what he's talking about with the clicking in the chorus. I can hear that.

Here's a part of it at the beginning of the song in the backing stem (it's also in the choruses, as well), and that same part with the volume increased. It can be more clearly heard in the one with the volume increased.

Also, you can hear the strings from the verses of the song in the bass stem, if you listen very closely. This is the bass from the first verse to the bridge (which should also include the 808 bass he mentioned).

As for the synth, I'm not sure what he's talking about there.

"They will (or won't?) cut you open, just to watch you bleed
They will chew you up and spit you out like they did me"

I love the "spit you out" lyric on that melody

There's an extra part that you're forgetting. At around 0:23 in the video, you can hear this:

"[?] (Not sure what he's saying at the beginning), just to say my name

Falling for the promise of the emptiness machine"

Also, I can hear an "and" before "they" in "they will cut you open, just to watch you bleed"

Can you send an audio clip or something kinda curious. Also the thing is they wouldn't need to make it DIY or partially DIY, LP always got the legit stems from GH, RB, Fuser etc, it could be a slightly different version of Faint since there's clear differences in the Lying From You RB version so that could be why? I d k maybe some one here should look into it or something.

    The stems come from Fortnite.

Also, I was wondering if the "fucking" part of "so fucking naive" could be restored in the Fortnite vocals stem while removing the choir vocals from the original acapella in the acapellas / acapellas & instrumentals albums of 'From Zero'. I have yet to figure out a way to remove the choir from the main vocals in the original acapella. The Fortnite vocals stem for "The Emptiness Machine" doesn't have the choir (which, honestly, makes the vocals cleaner, in my opinion).

  7. With the fact that we now have the stems for “The Emptiness Machine”, “Up From the Bottom” and “Faint”, it makes me think that there may be a chance for us to get stems to Linkin Park tracks of which we don’t have the stems of (two big ones for me being “A Place For My Head” [a song from Hybrid Theory that we don’t have the stems of] and “From the Inside” [which is the only single from Meteora that we don’t have the stems of].

Wonder if we will ever see a HT/Xero live rec.... maybe only Mike has something like that.

I wonder that too, and while I also would like to know if that would happen one day, it's probably unlikely that it'll happen, but, who knows. Also, this topic is about Grey Daze shows, so this is kinda unrelated to this specific topic, lol.

    5-Track "Xero" disc:

    photo_5123208892896095505_y.jpg

    - All songs with Chester.

    - Carousel and Part of Me were both different versions.

    - Some different Chester vocals on the Part Of Me pre-chorus. The samples of Chester's vocals in the verses are totally different vocal takes with more vocals, the “yeaaah. Yeaaaah yeaaaah.”

    - Different intro with Chester vocals on Carousel. Has a Chester vocal break before the first verse after the intro, like a mini acapella chorus.

I forgot to ask, but were the Chester 1999 Xero versions of "Carousel", "Part of Me" and "And One" the same instrumentally as the Hybrid Theory EP versions of the songs, or did they sound different, and if so, how different?

I think it's a case of "Mike was creating it for a soundtrack" but it got repurposed for the band. Maybe the soundtrack deal didn't work out. The song could have been intended to be an instrumental on the soundtrack and the vocals came later, around the time Jeff Blue first heard it.

What's interesting is that So Far Away is listed as Knight Rider on all demo CDs we've seen. Jeff Blue called it "Knight Rider Theme".

There was actually a Knight Rider series that started in 1997 and ended in 1998 called Team Knight Rider, but nothing came out from the franchise for quite some time after that and Hurry samples a song released in 1998, so it couldn't be for that. Could have been from a canceled Knight Rider project or it could be just a case of the band naming it like that because they thought the song sounded similar to the Knight Rider theme.

    This is the theme, correct?:

I can kinda hear a little bit of the inspiration for it in this song.

Is this vault available somewhere? Or just Jeff showing off his collection?

It's him showing off his collection of Xero/Hybrid Theory/Linkin Park demos that he got over the years. No idea if he will put them out to the public. He would have to get permission from Warner & Linkin Park first if we wants to put them out to the public.

    LINKIN PARK - HOLY GRAIL

For Xero, you're also missing the 1998 Xero versions of "Carousel" "Step Up", and "Stick N Move".

    - Different version of Untitled, which they described as raw, epic and their favorite thing they heard all day. Completely different mix and take than anything we've heard and different white noise rhythm at the intro too, like an extra click. Chorus sounded heavy, super grungy. Even earlier vocal take than the Untitled that we all know and both Mike and Chester sound very young.

    - Ashes is the Xero Reborn LPUTV song. It start's with studio banter: young Brad says like “put it at the fastest possible tempo I can rap at” and everyone laughs in the background. The song is pretty much exactly how Jeff described it in his book. It isn’t very good.

    - Blue and Could Have Been sounded the same or at least very similar to what we have.

    - Turn To Grey was terrible. The song is really weird, very choppy rhythmically, and had some vocals that supposedly don't belong to Chester, Mike or Mark Wakefield (Mike and Chester were both on it in other places though). It legitimately sounds like both Mark Wakefield and Chester are on it, but Jeff said "no, just absolutely no way that’s possible." Described as "fucking crazy with abrupt song style changes into crazy shit" and "a shit show track." It has "a really shitty Mark chorus then goes into a super soft Chester part and the vocalists sound so incredibly different from each other I just have an impossible time believing that’s not Mark."

    - Fiends sounded the same as the Rapology version.

    - Slip with Mark was very similar arrangement-wise but the lyrics were totally different. The "this is the sun behind the rain" pre-chorus was the only part they kept. The song was a little faster than the version with Chester too.

    - Chester's verse vocals on Pictureboard sounded like a different take.

    - Everything else sounded the same.

    5-Track "Xero" disc:

    - All songs with Chester.

    - Carousel and Part of Me were both different versions.

    - Some different Chester vocals on the Part Of Me pre-chorus. The samples of Chester's vocals in the verses are totally different vocal takes with more vocals, the “yeaaah. Yeaaaah yeaaaah.”

    - Different intro with Chester vocals on Carousel. Has a Chester vocal break before the first verse after the intro, like a mini acapella chorus.

    Hybrid Theory EP:

    - Kids is a Dedicated demo. It was the exact same takes of everything but it was unmixed / unmastered, so everything has different volumes on it. It was censored here too.
    - Cure For The Itch transitions into High Voltage seamlessly. Cure For The Itch was the Studio Finals version with the different intro voice clips.

    - Not totally sure that High Voltage was a demo as it sounded similar to the album version. It flows right out of Cure For The Itch, so that explains why it's like that on the released version. Same with And One/And Two.

    - And Two is the rap part at the end of And One.
    - Everything else was probably final, but didn't listen to A Place For My Head or By Myself to confirm.

    1-Track Plaster disc:

    - "Over night" is probably a note on when they recorded it or something.

    - She Couldn't has another title called She Had To Go. It's also listed as New Slow and New Ballad.

    - Knight Rider = So Far Away. Jeff called it "Knight Rider Theme" out loud, but didn't see it written that way anywhere.

    - She Couldn't (She Had to Go) and So Far Away (Knight Rider) sounded really similar to what we have, maybe the same.

    - A couple of the CDs seem to have instrumental versions of And One in their tracklists. Didn't ask about it.

    - Didn't get to the CD that says "can't use" on Part Of Me, so didn't ask about it.

    - There are versions of Untitled with live drums and without live drums.

    - There are CDs with Stick N Move, but didn’t hear it.

    - There weren't any different versions of And One that they heard. Jeff has like 20 CDs with And One and they couldn’t quickly find the live version in studio version. Might be in none of them.

    - Jeff said Kyle is generally the one on the demos with Chester.

    - There’s quite a few Studio Finals CDs, one of them has a totally different tracklist. Might have been the Plear (tentative band name) one. It goes: Paper Cut, Now I See, Plaster is like song 4 or 5, APFMH -> Forgotten closes the album.

With this information, now I need to know what the lyrics are to “Ashes” and “Turn to Grey”, despite “Turn to Grey” being a huge mess of a song, lol. This makes me want to hear these demos even more.

Also, did you get to hear the 1998 Xero demos versions of “Carousel”, “Step Up”, and “Stick N Move”?

And now we know that Pointillism is So Far Away :)

    I know, it’s crazy.

i was expecting Pointillism to be something totally different,  so that connected to the BMI entry

MAYBE Pointillism was featured in a NBA promo?

which songs could be on the BMI entry?

Rhinestone? (since it was featured on The Crow OST)

Pointillism? (since it was created for a soundtrack)

what other options it could be? Pictureboard? Esaul? Slip?

Who knows, lol. The only way we’ll find out what the NBA Inside Stuff track is is if we manage to get our hands on the episodes of the series from 1997/98/99.

wow, so that confirms that there is a version with Mark's vocals, I really want to see Carousel and Step Up from that demo 😁

I honestly think that “Pointillism” is “So Far Away” but just Mike doing all the vocals, since it was something Mike came up with for a soundtrack, though, I could be end up being wrong.

Over on Instagram, Mike shared a new Xero live photo from 1998. He did title the year correctly, as this is from June 24, 1998. This Xero show was at Backside Records in Burbank, California and is the third photo of the show to surface; ironically the first mention of the show was by Mike himself in 2020.

Here is the new photo Mike shared:

    image.png

There are two other photos from this show, which show the rest of the band lineup after Mike and Brad, with Dave behind Mike:

In these photos, we get good shots of Mark Wakefield, Rob, Dave, and Joe. This would have been before Dave left Xero, which happened AFTER Chester joined the band. This is detailed on our Hybrid Theory EP page. Chester auditioned for the band in March 1999, with Dave departing sometime in mid-1999 - the date is not really known.

Here is the first full-band photo they took together with Chester:

As of 2024, these three photos are the only circulating photos of Xero in existence. A fun fact is the photo on the first Xero cassette demo (Fuse, Dialate, Stick and Move, and Reading My Eyes) is of the pre-Xero band Relative Degree (featuring Mark Wakefield, Dave Garrett, Brad Delson and Rob Bourdon) with a close-up photo of Mike Shinoda xeroxed in, as Mike was not in Relative Degree. Below you can see the first Xero demo tape, with the original photo of Relative Degree performing below it.

Thanks Mike for sharing this new photo!

I wonder if Mike has more photos from this show and other shows.

For those hardcore analyzing fans like me, this might be huge, for most people it won't.

When I converted the .snd-files into .wav I found out some of them originally had longer titles and seemingly ROMEREND.snd originally was named "ROMERENDEZVOUS1" and rome2_(3.snd was called "ROME2_(3_COINS)".

Which led me to this vinyl called "Rendezvous in Rome", especially to a track with the title "Three Coins In The Fountain". Et voilà: It is the source of the bing noises and the strings. (Hence the title Rendezvous, obviously.)

The story's over, I just wanted to share this with you guys.

Intriguingly, the song (“Three Coins In The Fountain”) was also sampled in the soundtrack of Brad Stoker’s Dracula in 1992. Specifically, the track that uses the sample is called “Mina’s Photo”.

I think it’s a case of it being sampled by another artist, but it’s really interesting, nonetheless. I wonder if the band knew of the song being sampled by someone else before them.

Edit: For those who are wondering how I found out about this information, someone in the comments of the YouTube video of “Technique (Short)” said something about it, specifically, this:

    Quote

Fun fact: Sample was taken from the movie's soundtrack "Bram Stoker's Dracula - Mina's Photo".

    You're welcome. 😂
