    Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion and responding to this threatens to derail the thread, but I’m also baffled when people are so critical of “Good Goodbye” and call the verses weak.

     

    it’s just funny how people perceive things, because I think it’s arguably the best track on the album. Pusha’s verse could be better but still interesting, Stormzy’s (who I like as an artist separately) verse is solid, it has a big chorus and very cool instrumentation. But then people are like “the raps are weak,” like there aren’t weaker verses on Reanimation. 😂

     

    Don’t mean that as a direct attack at anyone though, just my own thought/observation. I’m sure I have my own LP hot takes people would question.

  2. Artwork of the album cover that was embedded into the official Japanese download that went live at midnight on Friday the 9th, local time. Nothing totally new (except for the white border, maybe?), but seemed worth sharing the first official instance of it being attached to a new music file.

    If my memory from yesterday isn’t completely shot, the Deluxe CD had “Lost” added to the main album after “Numb,” and included the LPU Rarities as a second disc (much like Hybrid Theory 20th digi-pack CD included the B-Side Rarities).

     

    I’m pretty sure the Deluxe vinyl was listed with LPU Rarities as 2 LPs and Live Rarities as a single LP.

All released in 2013 bonus tracks had 24-bit/44.1 sample, in November 2021 SOTD and NRL were fixed and updated to 24-bit/96.0kHz quality and those two are the only tracks with that quality. On HDtracks the info says 96kHz 24-bit in general for the whole album and also a little below that it says "* contains tracks in various sample rates " and in the tracklist, there is info what quality each of the tracks has. 96 has only SOTD and NRL, WID remix GU live and ATL has 44.1 and the rest tracks 48 quality.

     

    WID remix and GU live are available at 24-bit quality for the first time. EDIT: nah they are there at 16-bit only!

  7. Audio nerd stuff: I noticed this up on HDTracks last night in 96/24. Is this the first digital release of the original version “Across the Line” and “No Roads Left” in that quality (Or any of the four bonus tracks, for that matter)? I want to say yes but I’m not 100% sure.

     

    I remember the special edition release at the time (the grey book with the DVD) having PCM 48k (not sure if it was 24 bit) and *that* seemed major to me at the time.

    These streaming Atmos mixes are encoded in a lossy .m4a container, so FLAC would be a transcode. Specs match what's in the photo lpliveusername posted.

     

    The files are floating around in certain parts of the internet where once might request rips, however. It's not sourced from Apple Music, I think, since the beginning of "Forgotten" is in tact. Would be cool to try and convert it and build a DVD-R type thing for a more traditional 5.1 system, kind of like Reanimation.

     

    For any Mac using producer type folks here: I played around with the files and discovered they'll drop right into Logic without conversion and you can mess around with panning and split the tracks there.

  9. The track is one long track with no breaks, as is common on Calm, and it runs 1:19:03 (or 79:03, so slightly longer than the “Sleep for Students” release?). Can’t speak to any other differences, as I don’t have the Acoustic Sounds release. It’s fairly bare bones, with the same cover art as the Nov. 2020 release.

  10. Couple of things that are interesting about this is that for a long time we had the impression that the Xero cassette was a master for those songs and there was no digital master. The fact that there’s a DAT (which was accepted as a legitimate master format at that time) means that the info we had was either incorrect or half-true or alternatively someone thought enough to transfer what was probably a relativity new cassette at the time to a digital lossless format, which makes sense if these songs were getting heard by industry folks. I’d bet that the Xero songs on the HT box are sourced from some kind of DAT tape (Jeff may not have the only copies) or a digitization of those tapes, but not the OG cassette itself.

     

    Also pray for archival sake that these DATs were transferred to legit digital audio files (not just confined to the tape) at some point because they’re known for developing glitches in old age.

    Quality aside, I guess Blu-ray would have been more compact, but less accesible. Personally I think DVD was a better call because such a huge amount of content would have required several menus that usually drag on forever in some blu-ray players. 


    I’m slightly inclined to agree with you, but there’s some things I question. One would be that it looks like your using NTSC aspect ratio, whereas the master source being from a German station is probably PAL.

     

    On top is that the HD rebroadcast that exists at 720, which means that the station either has a higher quality source to work from, or already upscaled from their master. 
     

    The modern Doctor Who releases (up to Series 5) come to mind. The source is PAL 720x576. While the Blu-Ray upscales to 1080, the US DVD release has to downscale to 720x480.

  13. My feelings are the DVDs in the boxset are less to do with a decision about quality and more to do with making them more universally accessible.

     

    Those of us here specifically might be better versed in the technology and quality differences, but I think a lot of the buying public stuff can’t play BluRay or doesn’t understand it’s benefits, so Warner doesn’t want to lose sales in that domain. I’ve worked in retail where movies are sold, and one example was a customer who didn’t want to buy a combo pack of Star Wars with BR, DVD, and digital download that was cheaper than the standalone DVD because he “just wanted the DVD.” That’s the type of person who isn’t gonna buy a boxset with only one BluRay with all the video features, even if that might make more sense.
     

    It’s quite possible this will only be 480, but it depends on how it’s filmed. I’ve seen other music stuff this year streamed at 1080 on YouTube, then released solely on DVD.

    Mike seemed to hint at stuff being available outside the box on the initial stream when "She Couldn't" came out. I don't know if that would be an iTunes thing or a YouTube type thing. 

     

    One thing I hope is that any video stuff that might get released outside the box take advantage of being HD, where possible. There's been HD rebroadcasts of Rock am Ring, but I think 60% of media sales are still DVD versus BluRay (I still know people who can't play them) and probably would keep the cost of the box down. Digital's a little easier in dealing with that. The fact that the ATS documentary just got uploaded in 1080 makes me a little more optimistic for that possibility.

     

    Also seems like the HTEP is etched on the B-side and features the old HT logo, but I'm worried about how 28 minutes of music on one side of vinyl is gonna translate without being edited.

    Actually, has it been confirmed that HTEP is one-sided? I know I saw that somewhere, that the other side is etched, but it's not on the anniversary website. If it's 2 sides then there's no problem.


    If it is two sides, then no problem at all. 
     

    Missing the instrumental hidden track would be the worst option, but then they could actually do the static of Part of Me as an inner groove loop.

  16. Vinyl is such a big draw for me, especially missing Reanimation, that I’m trying to decide if the deluxe is worth it verses the vinyl boxset, and then seeing if the demos hit something like HDTracks in October. The box looks amazing, but I have to consider how much I really value CDs.


    For me, it feels like a toss up between the EP at five exclusive songs (given “Step Up” shows up on both) versus ten, with some of the stuff that absolutely got me into the band via the In The End: Live & Rare EP. Though considering sacrificing “And One” in my collection feels pretty shitty lol.

     

    I’m also curious if the EP will still feature the noise after Part of Me and the hidden track. You can probably do the 28/29 minutes on one side, but that’s tight versus 18/19, which would be a lot better in terms of fidelity.

    Edit: What is the sample on it? Sorry again if this is an existing theory, but the instrumental has some noticeable similarities to She Couldn't, what if this was a case of Stick N Move/Runaway and Blue/Crawling where two separate songs exist, but the latter stemmed from the former, and She Couldn't stemmed from Pictureboard, and the sample issue was always She Couldn't?


    The sample issue on She Couldn’t is a Mos Def vocal sample. I think the sample on Pictureboard is the intro strings*, which show up in slightly altered form on I think track 5, or roughly 5 minutes into the Tasty Gas Station Breaks vinyl (which makes me wonder if they were altered between the Xero and Chester version of the song, but time will tell, I guess?). IDK that we ever figured out what they were, but it wasn’t uncommon then for Mike to sample artists like Bjork, Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. We learned that from the MPC - I think even the “Sky” demo of Crawling featured Bjork strings that got re-done. 

     

    I think the edit is going to be these strings cut out, which honestly wouldn’t make a huge impact given the songs mix - they’re a lot more textural than they are integral. I also would not be surprised if the sample is missing from “She Couldn’t” on HT20, but just isn’t highlighted in the file name. 
     

    *EDIT: I saw after posting the above on Linkinpedia that it’s actually the outdo drums, not the strings. 
     

    Speaking on the bass thing, is it possible that Pictureboard and the Zomba Rhinestone are from the same sessions? He mentions them having new gear post-publishing deal on the podcast, so that gives us a bit of a timeline. It’s possible we’ll never know, but the leaked Pictureboard could have been tracked but not properly mixed and mastered the same way. It’s definitely not as rough as the cassette material, but not as polished as an official release. Also, do the LPU CDs with Slip, etc. have specific performance credits versus writing credits? Only think I can think I terms of some other timeline stuff towards the end of Xero into Hybrid Theory is the “Xero Reborn” thing being something both Chester and Pheonix both knowing. It’s a demo they both know, but we never heard. I wonder if anything coming on HT20 could be that?

  18. Purely speculation on my part while we wait, but does anyone else think that the "Alt-2" and "Art-3" artwork could be mock ups for an official release of the 8-song demo?

     

    In regards to "Alt-3", everything is blurry, but I feel like the first track might be "untitled" (everything stylized in lowercase). It feels like that tracklist matches what could possibly be there (if track two is "super xero,” as two words, and not "superxero"). The last track looks like it could easily be "and one." Where "points and authority" and "part of me" are look a little off, but the rest I think could check out.

     

    Then with "Alt-2," if those heavier black blocks are track numbers, that could match, too. Four songs per row, which is harder to see on top, but on the bottom that could easily be "she couldn't" (notice the word break), "carousel," "part of me," and "and one."

     

    I feel like we might get a four song EP and an eight track "album" of remastered demos, packaged as "Hybrid Theory" (the band) releases. Wether or not that’s just for the website, for a digital release, or that gets replicated in a physical package later in the year. It doesn't explain the parental advisory label, but notice it's on one but missing from the other. Feel enough like being a rock band at that point in history alone could warrant it.

    What I meant was that I wonder if that was an actual accident and Mike is riffing off of it now, or Mike knew then that this was the rollout for the 20th and that was kind of the first tease of what was to come. If so, if there's anything in the livestream that could provide answers. But it's more likely the first.

     

    Coizu's theory of how the thing works seems like it makes the most sense it and it might be more straightforward than I'm suggesting. My Catalyst single/Nine Inch Nails Year Zero/ARG brain is on, so I'm like pointing out and poking at things that feel potentially relevant.

  20. The warm theme is pretty interesting. A lot of this graphic design feels like old school Frank Maddocks stuff. My early speculations are that Mike's reg key is going to be potentially important in the future and that Solitaire could be trying to tease something, seeing as how it doesn't seem to work (unless I'm doing something wrong?). That's a number-letter combo - potential password?

     

    Throwing this stuff out in case any of it actually takes in the future. Doesn't seem like a lot is actually available yet.

     

    The first picture in the trash seems to say "4-Song EP" and we have four songs in the server. Wonder if that's the first music we'll get from the 20th and those are connected. Also, names of the file are the same as when we found them on Mike's desktop. I'm wondering if that's either a long con on Mike's part or that situation inspired this.

    Thank you so much for linking to these. I love this. The first one especially is so sick; it kind of feels like a modern approach to a Meteora track to me. I messed with this approach in some of my own stuff, it’s awesome to see how Mike comes at it.

    I’m glad I mentioned something just to find out about that because that’s sick and I want to go back and watch it. Not to take it too far off topic, but there’s big community of cassette artists on IG and even Alessandro from NIN has been utilizing a four track. It’s exciting to know Mike has done similar stuff.
