Well, this is an interesting development. Every year, Epic Games sends out a survey to players to try and learn fan interest in potential collaborations for their games, most notably being Fortnite. In years past a great majority of their surveys end up becoming a reality at some point. In their latest survey, Epic teased a great many new skin ideas, including a GTA collaboration, Five Nights At Freddy's, One Piece, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and on and on. Notably, in the lucrative Celebrity section, Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) was added as an option. More often than not, when a celebrity is teased, they end up coming to the item shop at some point down the line. Could Epic be interested in a Chester Bennington skin akin to that of other artists such as Eminem in the past? This is the first time Linkin Park has been added to this survey in any facet before.

That seems in poor taste.

Could be, but, it doesn't surprise me. Wouldn't be the first posthumous skin they've uploaded I don't believe. But nevertheless, it's news and good or bad, it's gotta be shared.

One could argue their goal is to pay tribute. They've a feature for their festival mode with its very own battlepass dedicated to one big artist. Only way I could see this working and not feel poorly thought out is to lock him to the mode, and make him unavailable for Battle Royale or other death oriented games. They've done that for other skins in certain modes in the past.

I dunno. It's a touchy subject.

I'm not profiting off a dead man or putting his image in a position to be repeatedly killed.

Financial gain isn’t the threshold for morality. You’re still using a dead man’s voice when he can no longer consent to it.

if I hosted deepfake porn of your relatives for free, does that make it okay?

I think there's a gulf of difference between a fan tribute to the man and using his image for commercial gain in a battle royale game. I'm not saying AI voice clones are beyond moral scrutiny, but I don't think the fact I dabbled with that tech prevents me from calling out something like this.

There are tons of ways to make actual tributes, people have been doing so for years. Throwing a song into a website and making someone else sing it is lazy and morally questionable at best. Like Wilderness said, is deepfake porn okay if you call it a "fan tribute"?

I think there is absolutely ZERO difference. You’re both taking advantage of someone who is dead. It’s trashy on both accounts.

Thread pointlessly derailed in record time, impressive.

I can understand having reservations about using a Chester skin in battle royale, but if it's in the rhythm mode or other social modes (I don't know much about Fortnite's other features either) it doesn't seem all that bad to me. Using his likeness would mean sign-off/buy-in from his estate, and they wouldn't just hand that over for something they thought was tasteless.

In what way am I "taking advantage of" anybody?

Don’t act like you don’t know. There is no chance in the world you’re not aware of what you’re doing - using Chester‘s voice for clicks/views.

I do make it for myself. I upload things because there's a chance that somebody else will like it too. But go off since you know more about my motivations than I do.

Keep em coming i love them.

White-knighting at its best in full display.

As if Chester was the first celebrity to have been portrayed posthumously and this would be such a big deal in the first place.

The pop culture comment by Jze is dead on point.

If you’re referring to me, it’s hardly white-knighting. It’s a moral debate.
