Second episode of the Drumeo featuring Colin Brittain. In this episode Colin is breaking down the song "Two Faced".

Mike's reaction to Colin's words about a riff is a sign that LP9 will definitely not be in the style of the first two albums. Mike still has a nu-metal phobia XD

I'm so curious to hear whether we'll ever get anything as out there as WTCFM or The Catalyst again. I feel like between some of the Crimson chapter and Overflow, Mike is hungry for some new sounds, but definitely kept FZ fairly safe and cohesive for the comeback

So Ironic since those first two records put them in the map, seriously, especially Meteora which cemented the legacy of LINKIN PARK.

I am ready for LP to take another crack for a new "HYBRID THEORY" sound. (Not the album but the philosophy of it).

I think that going the safe way should be with the next album as well, looking at the fact that it will be an album defining the new line-up. This is not the time for crazy albums in the style of ATS. The time will come. Not gonna lie something like Meteora would be great. This album always smells fresh. I just don't know if the band is able to replicate its genius from over 20 years ago. But looking at the level of their enthusiasm, they haven't had it for many, many years and their creativity should be at a high level. I hope that there won't be too many punk elements in it, and so that it is not pop-punk of pure water, because this gentleman on drums likes to produce such things. ;)

EDIT: Read your reply again. Actually pretty precise so forget it :)

METEORA sounds cinematic and very urban-sounding album. Of course they can still replicate that sound without Don Gilmore's touch.

I'm definitely misquoting here but I believe Mike said a couple of years ago or maybe around the time FZ came out that he or the band wasn't interested on experimenting again. I'd kill to have another bonkers record like that, unlikely probably though.

That would be terrible if he really said that, but I don’t think he did. From Zero even has some experimentation on it on tracks like Overflow, Stained and Good Things Go. The rest are pretty ‘’Nu-Metal’’ but I feel like that’s for two reasons, the first being that Nu-Metal became popular again with the younger generations within the last couple of years and second because From Zero was basically a ‘’come back album’’.

To never experiment again on future music would be crazy. The band released five albums that were not like the first two and it would feel like a de-evolution if they were to do that. If it’s true, that means that the change in style starting with Minutes To Midnight was because of Chester solely. I mean we know that he hated Nu-Metal (he literally said during an interview in 2007 that ‘’he fucking hates Nu-Metal, direct quote) and I do think he was a big part of the reason as to why the band changed their sound but I do believe that Mike and Brad and some of the others wanted to change their sound as well. Mike has always been experimental and so hasn’t Brad if you listen to what he says during interviews, etc.

Maybe the next album will sound like From Zero, I think it’s totally possible, but I would expect some changes, personally. Something that really bothers me about the fanbase is that it’s seemed to have regressed, because the fanbase used to love the change the sound and stick by it, maybe not all, but a lot of fans did, when the band was experimenting the most with Minutes To Midnight and A Thousand Suns. Sure, a lot of older fans abandoned the band starting with Minutes To Midnight, but it wasn’t all, we know that. Linkin Park was still massive from 2007 to 2017, especially from like 2007 to 2012 at least, no? And my last point that I’d like to make is that I just hope the band isn’t always remembered for just the Nu-Metal sound (basically the first two albums). They have so much more talent than just what showed on those two albums, it would be a real shame. Personally, I think Nu-Metal is absolute garbage and cringe worthy, the only ‘’Nu-Metal’’ band that I ever liked aside from early Linkin Park was System Of A Down, but both of those examples are still pretty different from what typical Nu-Metal is/was.  0% of what I listen to is Nu-Metal. What really made Hybrid Theory and Meteora special were Chester’s amazing vocals and the lyrics that connected with people, even if simplistic in ways. Mike was also great back then as well, but as far as the actual music, meh… Like don’t get me wrong, I love those albums, they are in my top albums of all time, but I wouldn’t say that they are amazing masterpieces of music, they just hold heavy nostalgia and love from me. Like I said, I don’t feel cringe rocking out to those albums or System Of A Down, the only exceptions. Even growing up as a young teen, I was into Pop-Punk, Punk and Alternative bands, I guess that’s not really the norm for a typical Linkin Park fan back then. Chester and his vocals were the reason I ever got into Linkin Park, though.

From Zero is basically their HYBRID THEORY for this lineup. Of course, I'm not expecting the band to do full crazy experimental shit on the next record. Their approach would obviously be somehow similar to METEORA. Elevate the From Zero sound while also bringing new sound, new sonic landscape, etc. It may take years for them to get back to experimental mode probably when they're not touring anymore in the future and just focus on experimenting in the studio. (JUST LIKE THE BEATLES).

Well I feel like he could be saying that about FZ era which is understandable, but he also has flipped moods dramatically (2009 metal demos to ATS, or pop demos to THP) so I wouldn't count it out at all

That doesn't sound like Mike at all. He's an artist he would never say something like that
