Sonic
How does everybody feel about the lead single "Heavy" now that we have the full album? I still enjoy the song and listen to it regularly. It's definitely not groundbreaking material but I still think it's a great single. I really like Kiiara here too, after hearing her EP last summer I was surprised they used her this way as most of her music is more glitch sampled low-fi electronic radio pop. Soeffingnaive92
Definitely one of my least favourites on the album but not a bad song at all and it helped the album promotion a lot. Also, great video Quote Link to comment https://lplive.net/forums/topic/12768-heavy-post-album-release/#findComment-275710 Share on other sites
lpliveusername
I totally understand why they chose it as the first single since they focused a lot on the meaning of the songs on this album and Heavy seems to sum up everything they were going through during the One More Light sessions (and it was a big hit), but as a piece of music, I'm still not a fan of how it sounds. I still think the bridge is one of the most disappointing / anticlimactic moments I've ever heard in a Linkin Park song because they start that huge build up and it simply goes nowhere. It's really evident that they put all their focus on the vocals and the instrumental was an afterthought. I still don't like Chester vocals in the first verse and how Kiiara takes over the entire song after that. It feels like a Kiiara song produced by Mike Shinoda featuring vocals by Chester Bennington and should have been in a Kiiara album. Sonic
I don't see how people think it sounds like a Kiiara song featuring Linkin Park. While Kiiara is a pop artist none of her music falls into this genre. It's pop but with a completely different instrumental undertone. Also, I like how once the chorus transitions into her verse she becomes a prominent part of the song. I think the bridge itself is fine. It doesn't need to complicate itself and suffocate in layers of synths and guitars. I think it is fine way it is. Not arguing just giving my two cents. Justin
It's not as terrible as people seem to think. I've listened to the full OML album enough times now to have certain highlights that I look forward to on playthroughs, and Heavy is one of them. After the first 5 songs, Kiiara's vocal comes in and creates a refreshing change of atmosphere. The guest feature here feels right and much more effective than Good Goodbye's features. Also, I'm glad that Heavy doesn't feature any of the vocal chops with which she has become synonymous. She sung the song well, and I felt like she added to the song rather than just being thrown in so LP could say "Look, we have Kiiara on a song!". Kilmer
I think it's a very solid song built on a track that could've been better. I still like it a lot though, and it sounds like Linkin Park more than people give it credit, certainly much more than Sorry for now, Halfway right or Sharp edges for example. They made a lot of these build up kind of songs since MTM, if you gave Heavy a different production and turned the guitar volume up it would sound A LOT like Powerless. RogueSoul
As I wrote my review about the album, 'Heavy' being the lead single made so much sense to me. One More Light isn't about saving yourself on your own, however. It's about realizing you're not alone, no matter who you are. That idea is expressed clearly in 'Heavy,' the duet between Bennington and Kiiara having a key meaning for the record. Bennington sings with a somber tone as the dark synth chords introduce the song, his drug and alcohol abuse giving the chorus lines "I keep dragging around what's bringing me down / If I just let go, I'd be set free / Holding on / Why is everything so heavy" a very strong reality. Kiiara joins the song, her inclusion making the point that anyone, regardless of age or sex, can face the same problems. As the two come together in the explosive bridge, they reach the realization that they never had to fight alone; they always had each other, two people who knew the other's pain, to come to. As the song explodes with a powerful, guitar-driven emotional climax, their newly realized bond serves as the key to their healing. FaiNt
I think what hurt this album from being a tad higher on the satisfactory scale is how it was mixed and overly polished. Meteora was also very polished, though. Quote Link to comment https://lplive.net/forums/topic/12768-heavy-post-album-release/#findComment-275808 Share on other sites
hahninator
The song has so much more going on the verses than I originally thought. It's growing on me for sure. JJJ
The song is really catchy, I also like the lyrics and I can relate to them a lot right now. I must say that the song is WAY better live than studio: live instruments, more emotion in the vocals, it has more of the LP vibe when played live. Sonic
RogueSoul that is an awesome take on the track. That perspective alone makes me enjoy it that much more. Also: while this is a stretch I always thought about an underlying massage to the fans that only like their older music and bash them for "being soft and pop" now. "Holding on, why is everything so heavy / I keep dragging around what's bringing me down If I just let go i'll be set free" could be a reference to their old music and their approach to writing songs that seemed so angry and dark. They are either speaking on themselves, saying they shouldn't stay angry and look at the more positive side of things, or even to their fans in a sense that they don't have to stay in an angry place and consistently want to feed their souls with things that will never get them out of that frame of mind. If they just let go of the past and take the weight off of their shoulders they would be better off. Sounds like a stretch I know but I feel like it's a possibility. Mike (while watching reactions to teens listening to Linkin Park's music) did laugh at one of their videos and go "why were we so angry?"
