Other Shows (Too little details & random mentions)

- Then today in my car the local alternative station announced the next artist as "Z-trip" and I thought, "it can't be, but it's gotta be!" Then I heard the vocals and thought, "that sounds like Ches. It can't be. But it's gotta be!" Came home, checked it out online and 'sho nuff, it IS the Z-trip and Chester!

I live in Detroit now, but lived in AZ from 94 to 2001. Used to love going to see "The Bombshelter DJ's" at Nita's. And Boston's. And I think there was a stint at The Green Room too. And everywhere else that is no longer open in Tempe. Not to mention various parties around town.

As for Chester, I met him when Grey Daze was opening for the band I was the booking agent for. I think it was one of his first shows ever....

What's the point of this long ass post?? haha It's good to see another hometown musician getting the recognition he deserves. Even though I know Z-trip has been well known in the electronic music arena for years, it was cool as hell to hear him on the radio. Mad props and wishes for continued success!! Makes me miss home more than ever though!! Hope to catch ya next time you roll through the D.

Just found out that person was talking about the show Grey Daze played with Tripping With Grace in Rally Kap Bar. Removing this info from the first post because it's already in the guide.

So I just found Grey Daze's official webpage from around 1996... and it wasn't archived

The description says: A fresh and new alternative rock band that is taking Phoenix, Arizona by storm. Their following of dedicated fans are growing enormous as they gradually outgrow the clubs on the Phoenix circuit.

The admin's name is Keith Holler if you want to dig a little more. I actually tried to find any Grey Daze's website at the time (official or not), but the period they were active ended right before the internet became "a thing".

Thanks a lot. Just messaged Keith Holler.

So I was browsing through that list of bands on Yahoo and found out that the band Necessary Enemy were using the same website and the exact same description ("A fresh and new alternative rock band that is taking Phoenix, Arizona by storm. Their following of dedicated fans are growing enormous as they gradually outgrow the clubs on the Phoenix circuit"), but their link was:

There were at least two shows that Grey Daze and Necessary Enemy performed together. One is already in the guide and another one is in the first post of this topic. The website thing got me a little suspicious, so I contacted Necessary Enemy's guitarist Bill Forrest to ask him if the two bands are as connected to each other as it seems to me.

Bill: Necessary Enemy and Grey Daze has a lot of connections. The drummer for Grey Daze was Sean Dowdell (who later founded Club Tattoo), my bass player was his uncle Bruce Dowdell, and the rhythm player was Josh Dowdell (Bruce's son), along with our drummer Terry Hoffman (Bruce's nephew and Sean's cousin and known as Wookie is currently a well respected tattoo artist in Club Tattoo). We also shared a rehearsal studio in south Phoenix since we practiced on different days. We did multiple shows with Grey Daze including one mainstage show at the Electric Ballroom, but they were definitely the bigger band playing the bigger venues while we stuck mostly in smaller Mason Jar style venues.
Lack of a better way to describe us, I got many people asking if it was us on the radio when Matchbox Twenty first hit, so that should give you an idea.
We would randomly even do one GD tune as a cover on occasion. I do remember one night we had a studio party together and at the end Chester and I basically carried each other to my bass players van so we could get home after countless drinks.

Chester and Sean had been together since high school in a band called "Sean Dowdell And His Friends?" And always had a strong punk calling, when Chester took a short break from LP I got to see him and Sean in their own band "Bucket of Weenies" play and really let their punk shine.

That's all with that site.

Summing up all the recent updates, these shows in question from the first post are now solved:

  • Grey Daze playing in Electric Ballroom with Chronic Future
  • Grey Daze playing in Big Fish Pub with Mr.Pink
  • Grey Daze playing in Mason Jar with Necessary Enemy

Arizona Republic newspaper clippings:

New old Grey Daze article + old Electric Ballroom article that mentions the band + confirmations for shows that are already in the guide + 10 new shows that are not in the guide:

Check out the 1995.01.18 clipping from that post:

Karey Rose, manager of the band Grey Daze, said the club is the best run he's seen. He said the band has played in 15 venues in Arizona and New Mexico.

"All the things you could do to make a premier facility, they're doing," he said

I did not initially pay any attention to the article other than just this part. I was thinking that it's just another random article that randomly mentions Kerry talking on the subject for some reason.

When I sent it to Kerry he told me that he remembers going to that meeting, but I didn't ask him for further details. Now that I have a full scan from some other issue of the newspaper, I can see the article was actually talking about the Ballroom having some legal issues putting on its After Hours nights.

So Kerry's presence actually makes sense given the fact that, as far as we know, the band had started playing After Hours in two weeks. Very interesting that it was actually a City Council meeting and Kerry had to take part to defend interests of Grey Daze.

In the end, members of City Council gave the Ballroom's owner a three months permit to held such shows.

It also means the band never played such shows before that time, so it helps to understand the timeline as well.

I'd like the scan to be added to every After Hours night page.

Got to chat with Jodi Wendt of Waterface just recently and here's what she had to say in response to Sean's words that once Chester left the band they had never performed a show with Dave Sardegna and Jodi under the name Grey Daze.

Jodi Wendt: "We did play at least 2 shows as Grey Daze before changing the name to Waterface - Big Fish Pub in Tempe, which was my first performance ever in a band, and at Jackson's on 3rd in Phoenix. We dressed up as members from KISS".

She also sent me the ad I attached to this message. The show is already in the guide, but we should

1) add that new newspaper clipping to the show page;

2) list all of the October 1998 shows (four, to be exact) as "GREY DAZE Shows Featuring Jodi Wendt";

3) move both Coconut Teaszer and Whisky show up in the list between 1998.04.26 and 1998.10.17 shows.

It also means we're a missing at least one show with Jodi (the above-mentioned Big Fish Pub gig).

Also, the timeline is getting clearer!

Sean recently made a post about Grey Daze on Facebook to honor Bobby Benish. A lot of people came over and commented remembering Bobby and the good times they had with the band.

The most interesting tidbits:

John of Lemon Krayola: "Remember when our rehearsal studios lost power and a certain band had a generator. All the band's sat there listening to your set. That's when I was like.. Holly shit their really good. I like we had a little rivalry it made both our bands want to be better".

Jay of Lemon Krayola: "Brings me back to the Argo studios, and sitting on the floor in the first club tattoo after you got the keys, We were playing at electric ballroom that night. Good times".

Person: "I remember passing out flyers in Mexico and the studio parties rocked!".

Mace: "My favorite Buckeye [bobby ~ LESTAT] story is when the power went out at our rehearsal facility and he pulled his generator off the truck and all the bands came over while we jammed".

Sean: "Mine was when we played with Vince Neil and his smile was wrapped around his head the entire show. It was like a huge dream to play with him for Bobby".

Person to Sean: "I do remember ...everyone was so shocked you cut your hair ...that was right before you played at the mason Jar... Battle of the band's".

Also, a lot of people seem to still have Sean Dowdell & His Friends t-shirts.

Got to talk with Nedra Gunn - the person who first posted about seeing Fat/Grey Daze/Chindo Squad show on YouTube. I asked him about the exact date, because I didn't know it at the time (but was able to figure it since then) and he just replied to my message:

Nedra Gunn: "I don't remember the date, but it was a badass show. It's where I first connected with Chester Bennington, I got him some water because he had a bad cold and a sore throat [...] Grey Daze and FAT were awesome. FAT played "Downtime", it was pretty cool and I watched all of the sets. I got Chester a water and he put it into a water bottle that he gave to me later after the show. The bartender tried to charge me for the water, like $2 and I told him it was for Chester, so he just gave it to me. I also got a bunch of demo CDs and stickers. It was a good venue even though they shut the Electric Ballroom down not too long after that show. Oh yeah, I also remember that the singer for Chindo Squad was also the drummer. They rocked too"

He doesn't have any of the demo CDs or stickers anymore, but his memories are pretty clear:

Nedra Gunn: "Chester and I had a good laugh afterward even though I was about 13 and he was 21 I think. He still had long hair and no tattoos. He reminded me of a male version of Janis Joplin's voice with their material back then, especially on the song "Just Like Heroin", really soulful and heart-wrenching vocals.
I think my guitarist's mom might have the Grey Daze water bottle I got from Chester. I gave it to her because she had to work that night and couldn't go to the show"

I then asked him if he thinks the band played "Just Like Heroin" at that show and if the bottle had a Grey Daze logo on it and he said:

Nedra Gunn: "Yes, they played JLH and B12, Sometimes and several others. I will ask about it. The water bottle was gray with their logo and a picture of the band printed on it. Meeting Chester that night really put my mind in motion to be a musician myself and I have had the liberty to meet and get to know many artists including some of his current members of Julien-K and Dead By Sunrise, including longtime friend Ryan Shuck"

Thanks to him, it's our first legit review of a Grey Daze show.
Updated the page: http://lplive.net/shows/db/greydaze/19970823

It's the very first time we are hearing of the band distributing any recordings other than "Wake Me" and "No Sun Today".

I bet the Scott Crowley recording served the same purpose at earlier shows, but the ones he mentioned are likely some other (later) demos.

  • 4 weeks later...

Great catch. It looks like the one that's already in the guide has the same autographs excluding Tako's, Mike Muir's and Mike Clark's.

Hey, never realized Suicidal Tendencies had Avenged Sevenfold members in their line-up.

I think it's easier to list the bands that Brooks or his brother Chad haven't played drums for. And most of the remaining ones probably had Josh Freese at some point.
