    8/13/01: END OF OZZFEST

    so the ozzfest is over. we're happy to be home, getting a little rest so that we can be fresh when we start the upcoming european and family values tours. we're hoping to do some cool new stuff on stage, and MAYBE even playing some older songs that we usually don't play. i don't know what it's going to be yet, but we are going to practice the e.p. songs to see if any of them work their way into the set. by the way, if you don't have the e.p., ask around on the messageboard for the mp3s. the songs are: carousel / technique / step up / and one / high voltage (original version) / part of me ...and there is a hidden instrumental track.

    7/10/01: FROM OZZFEST

    we're going to florida this week. we just finished five shows in a row. three ozzfest and two off-fest. the off-fest shows are particularly exciting, 'cause they are usually general admission, which means there are no seats. and that gives all the kids more room to run around. but as for the ozzfest, make sure you come to the transworld/fye tent--we sign there every day at around three o'clock, so plan to get there early. and people with cd's get to be in the front of the line, so bring your cd.

    by the way, the chat the other day was fun. sorry we didn't answer more questions, but it was a little overwhelming. maybe we'll do more next time; the log will be posted soon. and i'm going to answer some old questions on the message board. later

    - This show was announced on July 20, 2001 by the promoter Mean Fiddler, who puts on the Reading Festival shows in the UK. The announcement on the Linkin Park website read, "EMINEM and LINKIN PARK are the main performers on the inaugural US version of the READING festival. The festival is set to take place in CAMDEN, NJ near PHILADELPHIA on SEPTEMBER 8th,2001. Also confirmed is XZIBIT, with more performers to be announced shortly."

    - It was canceled in late August 2001. An August 20, 2011 article on MTV.com read, "Turns out you still have to go to England if you want to see the Reading Festival. The inaugural U.S. version of the long-running British fest has been canceled. Organizers of the Reading Festival USA, slated for September 6 in Camden, New Jersey, didn't have enough time to bolster the show's roster, which included Eminem, Linkin Park and Xzibit, according to the festival's publicist. They were looking for high-profile opening acts for what was to be a 10-hour show at the Tweeter Center at the Waterfront. "Rather than proceeding with a shortened and diluted lineup that does not fully represent the history and reputation of the Reading Festival, we have decided to spend time assembling a more complete lineup for 2002," promoter Mean Fiddler said in a statement. Apparently, the additions announced last week - Adema, Boy Hits Car, Clinic, Folk Implosion, Guided By Voices and Muse - weren't up to the British company's snuff."

    - Chester, Brad and Phoenix dressed up as 80's Rock Stars complete with leather pants, bandannas, studs, etc. This was their way of dealing with some rough crowds the first couple shows of the Ozzfest tour. This is also documented on the 'Frat Party At The Pankake Festival' DVD.

    - 'With You' was released on the Ozzfest 2001 CD. The CD insert says, "Recorded live at Alpine Valley Music Theatre, Milwaukee, Wis. June 9, 2001 and at Deer Creek Amp. in East Troy, Wis. June 11, 2001", but a recording exists from the June 9th show and it is not from that show. There was also no show on June 11th. The Deer Creek Amphitheatre/Music Center exists (now under the name Klipsch Music Center and formerly Verizon Wireless Music Center) and is located in Noblesville, IN. We have a suitable date one day later on June 12th. An Epic Records spokesperson confirmed to MTV that the album was recorded at the Milwaukee and Indianapolis stops of the tour. While this is not 100% confirmed, it is almost certain that the recording of 'With You' came from this show.

    - The band had some equipment problems after 'With You', which delayed the start of the next song for a few minutes. Brad played a short 'Sweet Child O' Mine' guitar tease.

    - Before 'A Place For My Head' (during the break), Chester said that the song was influenced by 'Rocket Queen' by Guns N' Roses. During the intro, he screamed, "What doesn't fucking kill us makes us fucking stronger, am I fucking right?" three times.

    - 'High Voltage' was featured in the setlist, which was rare for the OFFEST shows. It is possibly the only OFFEST show that had it (even though we're missing the Portland setlist just before this show) and likely was played due the band bringing it back for the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame show a week earlier as well as the fact that they had played Wantagh in late June for a radio festival.

    - Brad started playing the usual 'In The End' guitar intro from 2001 after 'Crawling', but someone told the band that they only had time for one song left, so they went into 'One Step Closer' instead. Due to equipment problems, it is possible that the setlist was changed (since 'A Place For My Head' never was in the number two spot in the setlist) mid-show, but it is known that 'In The End' was at least planned to be played after 'Crawling'.

    - Chester on Spin (2004): At Jones Beach on Long Island. Total equipment failure. All of our DJ stuff was completely gone--there was no power in any of it. All of our drum samples went dead. It's Linkin Park with nothing but raw instruments. You listen to "One Step Closer" and there's nothing but guitar and bass. Then I physically transformed by body into a visualization of what was happening onstage, and by the end of the show, I was running around in nothing but my shorts. I had no shoes on, no shirt, no jewelry. I was basically singing a cappella. Kids were like, "What song is this?" Hopefully, it'll be just this good when we come back to Jones Beach."

    Other Notes:

    - In the Hybrid Odyssey documentary that has part of 'By Myself' from this show featured in it, MTV mistakenly lists the date for the show as March 9th, 2001.

    - MuchMusic did a contest for its Gonna Meet a Rockstar series where a fan would have the chance to spend the day with Linkin Park and watch the show from backstage. The episode aired on February 10, 2002 and features a clip of 'With You'.

    - Offest / Big Day Off was essentially a "tour inside a tour" where a partial version of the Ozzfest lineup played eleven shows between Ozzfest shows.

    - This show was filmed for HBO Reverb (as Mike mentions during the show) but it was never shown on TV, possibly because of the problems the band was having during the show. HBO ended up showing six songs from the London Docklands Arena show about five weeks later.

    - Chester performed 'Walk' (Pantera cover) with Disturbed.

    - 'High Voltage' was released in 2013 on the new Hybrid Theory deluxe edition on iTunes.

    2/08/01: MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA

    Styles of Beyond has finished their time on our tour, and we were all sad to see them go home. they are really nice guys, and put on an excellent show. i hear they're going to go home to save up some money and showcase for some more record labels, as they are as of yet an unsigned act.

    as for us, driving almost non-stop for days at a time with twelve people trapped in one vehicle with "the shining" playing in the background isn't one of the most ideal ways to travel. -hahaha- at least we got here; the drive from denver last night was pretty rough, especially in the snow. something froze in our septic system, and the bathroom smell kept rob and i from going to sleep for a while last night. but our bus driver (also named rob) managed to fix it eventually.

    but this past week, the shows in salt lake city and denver were awesome. some of the biggest crowds we've headlined for, and the energy in the room really pushed us to deliver. everyone in our bus and taproot's bus have been passing around a cold. chester and steve were having coughing fits yesterday. all of our guys slept about 12 hours last night, trying to fight it off. good timing for a day off. we'll gather our energy so we can give 110% at the show tomorrow night.

    i'm going to stop writing and go look at some of those art contest entries. good luck to all...

    - Kerrang gave away 200 pairs of tickets to this performance, which was advertised as a "30 minute set w/ a meet and greet". To win the tickets, you had to call Kerrang and answer the question, "In which TV park does Kenny get killed every week?", with the answer being South Park, an American television show.

    - In interviews after the show, the band said they knew when they sucked on stage, and London's performance was one that they definitely did NOT suck at.

    - Due to the band not having any passes, Mike was briefly stopped at the front door a half hour before the show by security and was told he couldn't enter.

    - The day after this performance, the band held an all day "day of press", which included a BBC performance of four songs in London.

    - A 30-second snippet of 'One Step Closer' was released in the 'Crawling' DVD single.

    - Footage from this show was used in the 'Points Of Authority' music video.
