It feels like there’s always one kinda mysterious song that is also super interesting that the band never talks about. Skin to bone, mark the graves, halfway right and now stained
Also they all have a similar spot in the tracklist!
I still love these episodes but it’s weird how all over the place they are lol. No studio footage for this one, no other discussions about the songs place etc
-
Yeah kinda feels like from this that it was just Mike and Brad being like "we need a song that calls back to HT/M for the comeback" and they whipped it up rather quickly. The way Emily asks what part is the bridge reinforces that.
Maybe guitar/bass/scratches were just filled in after those two basically did all of it and everyone agreed it was worthwhile.
I would've liked to see the actual conversations about returning to this sound in such a committed way, it still blows my mind how it sounds right at home from that era. Also kinda funny Mike calls out the two minute song then when OEO and a lot of OML is optimized for length too

I feel like a big rap track like WTCFM or IOU is a given for the next album, but other than that I’ve honestly got no predictions. Probably a super soft track thrown in?
I feel like Overflow and Already Over Nothings There kinda came from the same place, and that there must be more material of that style sitting around. I’d personally love a lot more atmospheric stuff like that on LP9
I also want the ideas explored during LT to come back like Three Band Terror or Animals

Mike is recognized because he carried the Hip-Hop aspect with the utmost respect since day 1. I think people with a strong Hip-Hop background can acknowledge him because he always showed that he knows what Hip-Hop is about. Unlike many other "rappers" in rock bands back then, he "lived" and respected the culture (plus, you know, wrote some killer rap parts and produced a LOT of amazing beats).
I doubt many people from the genre would call him one of the best to ever do it, but they most certainly respect him for being "real" in a way. At least that's my feeling.
oh I agree, I just think it’s a little funny to hear them praise him in this light when the big comeback album feels pretty far from hip hop compared to a lot of the other albums. Like the opening would have felt a lot more natural to me if he had a Wretches and Kings type track on FZ rather than the reality of there not being a ton of hip hop beats on the album -

Yeah it's not about quality. It's about the focus. The focus so far has definitely not been on hip hop. There's no real hip-hop first song yet from the new lineup.
I felt a little awkward about this at the beginning of the interview lol. No doubt Mike’s a legend, but his rhymes are pretty simple and poppy on FZ, with the only big Hip Hop type moments imo being the verses of Two Faced and GTGI hope the hosts peeped Ziggurats, that thing is so underrated
Knowing Mike he was probably sitting there thinking “damn yeah I need to go make something for these guys to show I’m still connected to this side” and wrote 10 new hip hop demos in the hotel -
I think he probably just mixed them up
That being said, it seems silly to ever make an assumption about where a song came from.
animals/roads untraveled sound nothing alike
CTB lyrics go all the way back to 2013
OML demos started with just lyrics, so the end result could really sound like anything
-
With OEO and potentially GTG and LYF being OML era demos, I wonder if there are versions with any Chester vocals OR if Friendly Fire or other OML ideas like Tidal Wave or Ricochet got Emily vocals (or other singers)
also I wonder if they’ve basically locked in what we’re getting with an LPU cd and that’s what these BTS are built around. Like we might not get Overflows alt chorus since we heard nothing of it, but we’ll get Mike singing an early version of OEO for example
-
Color me very surprised that LYF got played live
I really felt like it and Unshatter would never see representation beyond their YouTube visualizers. They clearly both represent sounds that didn’t really fit the album imo
Now I’m wondering what the next surprise will be. All for nothing, friendly fire, lost in “full” and LYF were all surprises for me -

#LetYouFade
What if it was an old OML demo?
As soon as I had the chance to listen to it, from the harmonic progression a melody immediately came to mind, a primordial demo shared by the band in 2015 in the OML pre-sessions - LINK BELOW
I don't know if it's a pure coincidence (harmonic progression, notes and tempo) or if the piece has actually been reworked.
The fact is that we are faced with the first piece of this new era that, in the metrics, presents "cut" bars just like it happens with almost all the pieces of that period.
Perhaps it could be a track recorded as a demo at the time and revised over the years.
The demo is District 108.
Obviously it's just food for thought.
very cool find, I agree that the lyrics and “cut bars” feel very OML. I could tell OEO was OML immediately but this one didn’t cross my mindhopefully we get the soft demo one day that Mike alluded to

I just think it’s great how these dlx songs all offer something distinctly different from the main album. Like UFTB feels kinda like TEM but is solidly differentiated by the rap bridge and prechoruses, Unshatter feels kinda like CTB but not really and has a totally different bridge feel, and LYF feels unique too
You have to imagine some demos and other tracks must have been more redundant and they chose 3 great ones to give us. Can’t wait to find out what the blurred song is on Phoenix’s phone amongst other demos that surely exist from this timespan
-
So who's gonna go looking for his raps on the boards? Did we know about those before? He claims it's a new tidibit of information in this video and says the fans will add it to his wiki pages
-
I'm surprised Stained came befoer IGYEIH
It'll be cool to get IGYEIH and finally have a complete LP album again
Also if we don't get a proshot of Mike's solo one day it will be a huge miss, it's so fun

man after hearing Mike's demo vocals i now wish OEO was a back and forth between both of them. Emily solo version is good but that would have been so much better imo lol
I think it would be sonically interesting but awkward for them to play a couple in a songWhat I would really love is a song like COG between them, or for us to get a proshot COG because I feel like that song sounds amazing with a female vocalist

To me it looks like by set A, B and C they just mean which song's lyrics are gonna be on the intros (COG/Iridescent/BID). The rotations right now don't make much sense. It's like they're gonna play whatever they want in them.
I find it so weird still that COG and BID are in that rotation at all when the songs themselves are not being rotated. I figure RU or some other melodies would be there, in the same way that The Catalyst appeared there when it was no longer in the full set
I also wouldn't be surprised if FF never reappeared, but here's hoping that some OML representation gets in there soon

I'm totally in the dark about LYF. Is it really uncharted territory for LP soundwise or there is a song that they've done in the past that can remind you of it?
It’s not wildly different, it’s still guitar driven and melodic. I think the track that comes to mind for me is TooLegit -

Idk why but I feel like Unshatter is a song they will never play live. I think they will play Let you fade later this month or in June instead. Tonight I think it's time to hear Stained for the first time
agreed about Unshatter, but LYF doesn’t seem like a song they’d add either having heard it. It’s a very different feel from the rest of FZ and it would make a lot more sense to promo the stuff that sounds like the “main sound” with adding the rest of FZ and stuff like QWERTY -

I did predictions but realized there's no way they debut IGYEIH, Stained, and Unshatter in one night so I deleted lmao
I feel like one of them is a safe debut, or at lest something like LGM or Blackout (maybe shortened) -

man they are rotating the best songs.. they should rotate the overplayed songs im fucking tired of Burn It Down, New Divide, WID and specially Somewhere I Belong.
these are the songs 80+% of the audience is there forI do wish they’d cut BID and ND in half tho to make room for something more interesting, I miss all the mashups
-
One thing I would love to see is the COG interludes replaced with melodies like Final Masquerade or Nobody Can Save Me, it would be the perfect way to sneak all the albums into the show
Add in a bar of the Krwlng strings and change COG to have the remix outro and we’ve got all the albums represented
Also I think it’s funny how many more times Mike has done the 2nd verse of UIB over the first, he must really like it
Also There They Go feels like it’s shown up a lot, but maybe I’m just thinking that bc I really loved the 2008 intros for points
-
Where’d you go was such a nice surprise, the only thing I think I really missed was Leave Out All The Rest. I would trade OEO or Overflow for it, and I feel that BID doesn’t have a ton of energy and could be shortened
I’m really glad to see GU cut, and was psyched to have APMH
Casualty could probably rotate with a heavy song
-
Oh yeah, from the listening party I can confirm that the live versions of TEM, Two Faced, HITC are from the premieres of those songs. I think Casualty might be because I remember the bridge being extended, but those were playing as we walked in and people were talking and stuff so not sure, and I don't remember anything unique about OEO to know what show that was from

“I’ll remember you, I won’t let you fade”
that’s gotta be written about Chester, do you remember any line in the rapped verses?
the “what’s next could be the last” and “how did we get here” stuff was from the rap. I could see it being about Chester and the band toying with paying tribute to him on LP8, and I could also see it just being about grief in general. The fact that Emily is on it makes me think Mike would say something like “it was about grief in general, something both Emily and I experienced and channeled in writing this” -

more infooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
My friend said it reminds him of Foo Fighters
It starts with a piano that makes it seem like it will be slow like RU, but "drops" into guitars that remind me of something between Foo Fighters and No Roads Left
Lots of Mike singing, then it transitions to Emily singing the chorus. Mike has a rap in verse 2, and the rap comes in on top of the last chorus in classic LP fashion (Easier to Run, WFTE). I don't remember all the lyrics, but they're basically along the lines of "I will always remember you, I won't let you fade" and "This next time could be the last" and "How did we get to where we are today". A common comment under this song will be something along the lines of "this is Mike letting us know he'll never let Chester's memory fade"
Compared to UPFB and Unshatter, it's the biggest departure from FZ's sound. Not many electronic elements, reminds me of MTM and stuff like NRL, PTB, WWDK.
Mike sings the bridge in a very raw and vulnerable way. Easily the most "raw" sounding thing from LP 2.0 besides Emily's vocals at the end of IGYEIH
Emily doesn't go crazy with vocals at any point, but brings that "high octave" energy in the same way Chester does on stuff like Rebellion singing alongside Mike
Feels like a solid song that the band consciously listened to but decided "let's not make this album feel too sentimental/stuck in the past"
-
Just heard let you fade at the listening party here in ATX, great stuff! I think the fans will like it a lot

3 Meteora songs in a row is really surprising. The band used to be obsessed with making sure every album got its fair share with stuff like the NMS/Catalyst/UIG/ALTNC mashup, Blackout/Papercut, Runaway/Wastelands etc. There's still lots of mixing albums together but I'm surprised something like 3 M songs in a row would happen bc of that, and that OML still has 0 representation
