  1.

These songs are def not unique nor does it have a LP feel to it.

You are free to like them, but IMO, unique does not automatically mean good.

These songs are so generic, any top 40 pop band could cover these and it would fit right in with them.

I just wish they approached pop differently to the way they did, which is generic and forgettable.

I completely get what you mean and I agree for an extend.

Even if we look back at the songwriters and producers they brought in, you basically get exactly what you can expect from those people. I love that LP tries to open their boundaries with every release, but this time, they basically borrowed too much from their collaborators and 'lost' too much sight on their own sound, which makes most songs so far end up predictable and a tad generic. But it's fine for me, even though I know they could indeed do pop differently and more genuine.

  2. I'm really looking forward to see how they will add the new songs on the setlists with heavy songs like One Step Closer and Rebellion.

It wouldn't be so hard if they would dose the setlist and make certain sections with songs in a similair tempo/sound

  3. I don't think anything from One More Light so far has been bad pop music, but it's a bit too predictable (and yes a tad generic aswell) while in 99% of the cases I wouldn't call them anywhere near that. But if I learned anything from being a LP fan is that if you don't like something by them, either listen it again and see if it grows, or take a step back and sit back till the next era :)

They are def. not the same people from 10years ago and that is logical and normal. They get influenced by a lot more things and they also have children growing up and coming in touch with certain music styles and influences their kids look up to. Instead of their first few records, where they basically were growing up, dealing with stuff and figuring out who they are. Now they are grown ups, with kids, with experience and new problems they have to deal with.

and yes I agree with Justin, that line reflects it perfectly

  4. Collaborations on the album doesn't mean they're out of ideas. They just wanted to collaborate. Creativity isn't a finite resource, you don't just "run out" one day.

Also, I disagree with your assessment of their work lately. MTM/ATS were Linkin Park's best albums to me, but it's not like LT/THP/OML are bad albums by any means.

Different people have different tastes. On this site alone, I've seen people who think HT/M are the band's weakest albums, and I've seen people who think HT/M are their only good albums. It's all subjective, and it's what makes this community so interesting. Trashing the band though and insulting their work without being constructive is just a waste of time, though.

@GraDoN What you said is also subjective. You say the band isn't talented, as if that's just an unspoken fact that is indisputably true. There are literally millions of people who would disagree with that statement, though. I am one of them. I feel LP as a collective, are a talented band. Do they have misfires? Yes. Any band that switches up their style as many times as they have are bound to have a couple of misses, but as a whole I think they are an innovative band that's very open to change, and almost always pulls it off.

I agree completely, and I think that is also their biggest strength. And the band is obviously talented, otherwise their discography wouldn't be so diverse, including LPU demo's etc. I also think their diversity is one of the reasons why I am able to be a fan for so many years now. I have been a 'fan' of certain bands for an album cycle and then basically lost my interest. But with LP I just know that even if I am not 100% convinced by the recent/current output, there is a wide discography available that can satisfy my musical needs in some way or an other and most stuff I am not really feeling grows on me over time. One More Light and it's sound would have happened sooner than later, so I am really not that suprised about it all. Whether we like the output so far or not, they still wanna push boundaries. Whether we like the ground they push themselves to is an other thing, but you can't say it is boring or that they are not talented or not innovative. I mean even though it is not really innovative soundwise on the current commercial landscape, it is creativily innovative on their part. They still had a hand in everything they do, even if they hired/brought in songwriters and producers. The same can't be said about a band like Maroon 5, who just dial their recordlabel to hit them up with the writing/productioncamp of Katy Perry and just fly Adam Levine in to lay down some vocals and some random demo singers to do the background vocals.

  5. I like your comments and analysis of the situation though... perhaps LP just wanted them on the song too much? If i was in a band and collabed with someone and they phoned in the verses, I would just cut them from the song.

This is basically how 99% of the collabo's with artists come around in these day and age, a lot of features are even recorded on the road, phoned in from a dusty hotel room, that's really how it works these days. If you were in a band, you probably would have to settle for things like these if you want to collab with whatever artist.

  6. Could not agree more on the pitched vocals...they used them in BS and I hated them but it feels even worse here. But the chorus sounds good to me.

    Agreed

I love that pitchy vocals. So, it's fine for me. I bet some of the fans love it. The verses? It's really dope. The songs release from OML getting better. Just my humble opinion.

Yeah each song sounds better so far, maybe that's their strategy

  7. Just heard it and it is more instant than I expected chorus wise, though that pitchy voice in the song annoys me, I love Mike's verse, not really caring for the features. Wasn't so 'different' in sound as I expected it to be, in comparison to the rest of what we heard so far though.

  8. Seriously, next time LP drops an album they shouldn't say anything about it. Every time it builds up this crazy hype train and almost everyone is let down with the first thing that comes out.

When LP says their next album has a harder, "in your face" sound, people expect HT part 2 (this happens with every new LP album)

When LP says their next album focusses on lyrics, everyone expects top notch lyrics that even the greatest poets couldn't write.

Every album cycle people are disappointed because Mike said something about the album in an interview and they expect a whole album to be like that description.

Normally I actually don't really have that much expectations, because I know they will suprise in whatever way.

This time around, they basically keep putting the focus on these deep personal conversations that led to creation of the album in the promo appearences. But they don't really talk about why they bring in certain songwriters and that is what makes things questionable for me. I mean Heavy is exactly what you can expect from a Justin Tranter song, but did they hire the guy? did they know him before and got with him for just a friendly favor? Because I can't connect the dots as to why they got the hottest popsongwriter to help them with these personal conversations. I don't expect some deep poems to be their lyrics, but it is basically the opposite to go to the other side and basically hire the songwriter that is used by recordlabels for their popacts to get a hit. I actually like Heavy, but I can't deny for myself that it feels a bit calculated. And then we have Mike who comes around and just simply says Good Goodbye is inspired by basketball, which is fine, but I wouldn't mind if they would be a little more open about the creation of the album or would indeed stay quiet fr a cycle and let the music speak without anyone knowing what to expect. There will always be people dissapointing and going into that weird 'I need a new HT' phase. But it wouldn't have hurted would the interviews quotes been 'We wrote a big part of the album with personal conversations in mind, but there are also some songs we wrote with other things in mind, refering to the basketball for example' I mean it is a big difference between writing a song with a friend dying in mind and turning around and talking about a song inspired by basketball. I mean Good Goodbye may be the odd song on the album and actually dont even fit with the concept of the rest of the tracks, but it makes it a bit confusing after the promo cycle so far. I am excited to hear the rest of the album, including Good Goodbye though :)

  9. What's weird is that Mike was in a SJW vibe last year. And now they accept the "hoe" thing.

If this is supposed to be sarcastic, then Stormzy is making fun of himself. And i don't think he would do that like this.

OML is a personal, very serious meaningful album. Why would they put a ironic/funny song on there? Doesn't seem to fit.

All lyrics were written based on their life problems, and this one was written based on "i was watching basketball..."

That is why I put big question marks on the actual things they are saying about this record, because for every thing they say, they seem to have something that contradicts it to some extend. I get they don't want to spoil too much, but it would be better if they would have made it clear that a big portion of the album was based on those conversations they had and that a part actually was influenced by other things, like watching basketball  maybe things become more 'clear' once we hear the full record.

  10. If this proves anything (Heavy, Battle Symphony, and these lyrics), it's that the band should go back to their old songwriting form. Failed experiment. But that's also a small sample set and I have yet to hear the full album as a whole. If you gave me Lies Greed Misery, Until It Breaks, and Skin To Bone I'd say the band had lost their collective minds and should try a new songwriting process - LOL.

At this point I am still wondering what the initial idea was of this album and the 'experiment' as a whole. I don't really believe it was at the songwriting at core at all. They may have tried a new approach, but I keep wondering why it all seems too obvious. I mean they work with one of the most used popsongwriters for Heavy and the song is the most obvious song you could expect from a Justin Tranter written track. Even without hearing this track, you get a certain obvious lyrical content from a featured guest (refering to 'hoes'). I mean LP is doing something different every record, but so far this record basically gives you exactly what you could have expected from just reading lyrics and songwriter/producer credits. It feels a bit too calculated, while I never used that word in relation to them  I mean we have yet to hear this track and maybe as a whole it is actually a total suprise. But I hope some other album tracks give some more suprise as a whole and the credits don't give away too much

  11. I would love the setlist to be build with songs with around the same tempo/sound. A song like Robot Boy wouldn't sound out of place in a section with Battle Symphony. A song like Given Up doesn't sound out of place with most Hunting Party material.

Also I hope they just gonna be like 'screw it' and actually just choose 18 to maybe 21 songs they feel they can play in mainly full, rather than playing 28 songs in verse-chorus duration.

  12. The packages are midprice in comparison to other acts. I know LPU has summits etc. etc. for the diehards but I always wonder what kind of crowd comes along for these prices. A part of them will be some kind of fans, who saved money (?), but a portion of the people will also be the rich kids who's daddy bought them a package. Throughout the years I have seen it enough, even people who got a Meet & Greet and didn't even knew the basics of the act they were meeting, but hey, it must be cool to meet someone and tell your friends, right?

But I always wonder why these packages include stuff like electric guitars, I mean it's cool, but not 'needed' overall, I guess it must justify the prices in some way. And I guess it's better than what some 'popstars' do with adding their perfumes, shoe collection, shampoo endorsement and bag collection into the package
