    - The show was privately held in Electric Ballroom for Warner Bros Records executives. The band's manager and venue staff were likely in attendance as well.

    - While the exact date of the show is unknown, it probably happened sometime around late 1996, because on the recording Chester mentions the band is working on their new album with a tentative release date set for January. As we know, the band started pre-production for the album on December 3rd, 1996.

    - This late night show was the second one of two band's concerts on the same day.

    - Following Chester's death, Hed PE's former member Mark Young posted the following message on his Facebook: "I think many of us have some fond memories and anecdotes of Chester Bennington to share. Mine goes all the way back to 1998 before Linkin Park came to be, when Hed PE was on tour with Snot. Hed PE was opening for this legendary band and we were playing one night at an outdoor venue in Tempe called Boston's, which is long since gone. During the Snot set, fueled by a few beers, I thought it would be a great idea to stage dive during the show. For a couple minutes it was awesome, getting passed around the crowd while Snot rocked the stage, untl I reached the back of the crowd and was dropped from 6 feet in the air straight onto my head. I was a little dazed and bleeding when a young lad in the audience and his lady came up to help me. He had dreadlocks and an infectious smile, and they half-carried me out to our bus. He got me home safely, commented on what a great show it was, said goodnight and I never saw him again.

Then in 2000, when Linkin Park opened up for Hed PE for a few brief moments before they went off to the moon, a shaven-head young lad with that same infectious smile came up to me at the start of tour - now the singer of Linkin Park - and recounted the story from Boston's of how he and his wife Samantha had picked me up and helped me out to our bus.

Such a sweet soul, he will be dearly missed".

    - It was confirmed by Sean's friend Grey Daze were actually on the bill that night as well: "Good times back then Sean, glad I was able to be there in person for most. One of my all time favorite nights was when Grey Daze opened for sevendust, hed-pe and snot!"

  5. 1997.08.15 Phoenix, Arizona

Photo Icon: , Yes, Year: 1997 Month: 08 Day: 15 Show Date: 08/15/1997 Previous Show: greydaze/19970726 URL Link: greydaze/19970815 Next Show: greydaze/19970823 City: Phoenix State: Arizona State Abbr: AZ Country: United States Country Abbr: US Venue: Castles N' Coasters Venue Type: Other Event/Festival Italics: 0 Show Category: showwithoutsources Notes: , Yes, Song No 1: 01 Song Name 1: Unknown Other Notes:

    - Castles N' Coasters is an amusement park and family amusement center located in Phoenix, Arizona.

    - There are several conflicting reports as to what bands were playing with Grey Daze at their supposedly sole Castles N' Coasters performance, so it is unclear if the band actually did multiple shows at the park or if all of them are really the same exact show:

    • Show attendee: "I remember seein one of the early incarnations of jimmy eat world play at Castles N Coasters in Glendale, AZ way back in the day. The opening band was Gray Daze with Chester from Linkin Park on vocals. There were like 30-40 people there. It's amazing that Jimmy Eat World is even still around...they have a few good songs though".
    • Show attendee: "@jimmyeatworld I remember seeing you guys at Castles and Coasters in about '94 and skateboarding with some of you in a Mesa parking garage".
    • Show attendee: "Well, it was awhile ago. I remember they played Castles and Coasters, which I thought was a strange place to have bands. A local rock dj fronted a cover band that played before them. The only other thing I remember from that show was Chester's wife and her baby stroller".
    • Show attendee: "I can't be sure but I think it was during the summer of 1998". When asked if Jimmy Eat World were also on the bill, this person told there weren't any other bands except Grey Daze.
    • Jonathan Krause: "I did not play the Castles and Coaster show. It was probably 97".
    • Member of the band Shaded Grey: "No idea on the dates, but one was at the Mason Jar and another was at Castles N Coasters I believe". When asked if the band played with Jimmy Eat World or "a local rock dj fronted a cover band" as was reported by one of the other persons, he replied: "Hmm... it might be the first one with the cover band. I believe we played after that but before Grey Daze. Tough to remember".
    • Chris Braegger of Chindo Squad: "I don't remember much about it at all, other than it was sponsored by a radio station who was broadcasting from the venue at certain points. Grey Daze wanted to play before us for some reason, which was odd since they generally had bigger crowds that we (Chindo Squad) did. We played with them on several occasions and got to know some of the band pretty well. I remember that show being outside and pretty hot, so it was some time around summer."
    • On December 22nd, 2017, Sean Dowdell posted a picture of Grey Daze an several other people with a comment: "This pic was posted by a fan yesterday. It reminds me of good times. Also in this pic is a man named Jacob Dowdell who passed away on this day Dec 22, a few years ago. I miss several people in this picture @therealgreydaze when we played a show at Castles and Coasters with @jimmyeatworld #greydaze #greydazereunion #greydazetour #ripchester #ripjacob #ripbobby #ripjosh".

    - This date (August 15th, 1997) was found when a person named Jason Williams has made a post on his Facebook after Chester's death about seeing Grey Daze at Castles N' Coasters on the birthday of Jason's childhood friend named Judd, who also tragically passed away some time ago. When asked about the date of Judd's birthday, Jason told that day was August 15th, but he wasn't totally sure about the year. He then said: "I was 12 at the time, so it was 21 years ago on the 15th of August, I believe. I saw Grey Daze play at Electric Ballroom with Chronic Future a few months before that show". The Chronic Future show happened on February 1st, 1997.

Comments: 'She Shines' was released by Grey Daze's Jonathan Krause online in 2006. Two more songs surfaced in 2010. The videos contain fade-in/fade-out visual effects and captions introducing the band members, the songs and the venue. On May 25, 2015, LESTAT (LPL staff) obtained the full show from Jonathan.

    - Right before kicking into the set's first song 'Commit', Chester introduced the band by saying: "Hi, everybody, we're Grey Daze!... And...alright. This song is a song about love. Hope that you have a loved one. 'Cause love is a beautiful thing".

    - Part of the outro of 'Commit' was sped up comparing to the demo that was recorded live during David Knauer's pre-production session for Wake Me nearly a month later.

    - Right before 'Painted' the band had some minor technical difficulties that caused a small delay, so Chester took the time to introduce the song: "This next song is about a boy. The boy who thinks that nobody understands the way he lives, you know? The boy who thinks that everybody's after him. And nobody wants to be his friend".

    - Chester dedicated 'What's In The Eye?' to his passed away friend named Sean.

    - The band performed a different version of 'Morei Sky' with a slightly different guitar solo and an extra chorus added to the end.

    - The band performed what appears to be the early version of 'She Shines' with a slightly different chorus melody and breakdown structure.

    - After 'Spin' Chester introduced every band member but himself, jokingly saying that he forgot his name.

    - Mindy Nilson of Lemon Krayola came out to sing 'Shouting Out' with the band.

    - 'Starting To Fly' was played at a faster tempo than the version that appeared on "Wake Me". Transition between the first chorus and second verse was twice longer than on the album version.

    - A few seconds into 'Come On' the song was stopped and restarted again. Part of the lyrics of the second verse were different and the outro was shorter comparing to the demo that was recorded live during David Knauer's pre-production session for Wake Me nearly a month later.

    - During 'Start Me Up' Chester threw a few Grey Daze t-shirts into the crowd.

    Debut(s):

    - This was the first time ever the band performed 'She Shines' in public.

    Other Notes:

    - This is the first full Grey Daze show recording to ever be released.

    - This show took place a month before the band has hit the studio to record their very first album, so a lot of the songs that were performed during this set and ended up being released were somehow changed with the help of the album's producer David Knauer.

    - The song 'She Shines' almost didn't make the album because the band wasn't sure if people would like it. When they played it at this show, Chester commented that it was a brand new song and it's public debut. After the song was done, the reception by the fans was enough to convince the band to put the song on the CD.

    - The Linkin Park community wasn't aware of the existence of the song called 'Smoke Mouth' until the video of the band performing it during this show randomly surfaced online in 2010. According to Sean Dowdell, it was never recorded in the studio and is just one of the 20-30 Grey Daze songs that were never released. In 2015 with the release of the full show, we also became aware of the songs titled 'My Bluest Day', 'Painted' (no relation to Sean Dowdell And His Friends song with a similar title), 'Everybody's Falling To Pieces' and 'Piece Of My Mind'.

    - Lemon Krayola was also a very popular local band at the time. Interestingly enough, Lemon Krayola also happened to be the opening band for Stone Temple Pilots’ second ever gig in Arizona that took place at the Mason Jar in November 1992.

Comments: Obtained from Jonathan Krause by LPLive and released as an exclusive on July, 2015. At the beginning of recording, you can hear crowd noise before "Painted", then a glitch takes you right to the middle of the song. 'Wake Me' is abrupted with glitches and the recording jumps to the ending of 'What's In The Eye?'. The ending of 'How Would You Be' is cut. The tracklist of this recording is believed to be the full setlist, but it is still possible that more songs were played.

Setlist Icon: Yes Notes: 0 Song No 1: 01 Song Name 1: Painted Song Notes 1: w/ Early Guitar Solo; Live Debut Song No 2: 02 Song Name 2: The Endless Highway Song Notes 2: Live Debut Song No 3: 03 Song Name 3: Starting To Fly Song Notes 3: Early Version Song No 4: 04 Song Name 4: My Bluest Day Song Notes 4: Live Debut Song No 5: 05 Song Name 5: Wake Me Song Notes 5: w/ Early Guitar Solo Song No 6: 06 Song Name 6: What's In The Eye? Song Notes 6: Live Debut Song No 7: 07 Song Name 7: How Would You Be Song Notes 7: Live Debut Show Notes:

    - This was the band's first public show ever. The line up for this incarnation of the band was: Chester Bennington (vocals), Sean Dowdell (drums), Steve Mitchell (guitar) and Jonathan Krause (bass). Confirmed by Chester's introduction during the show.

    - This is the only known performance of the songs called 'The Endless Highway' and 'How Would You Be' and the very first time we found out of their existence.

    - Since it was such an early show and featured a different guitarist named Steve Mitchell, the guitar parts of known songs were slightly or entirely different from what ended being up released nearly a year later on the band's first album 'Wake Me' with guitar solos being the most prominent difference. Some drum parts were different as well.

    - The band performed what appears to be the early version of 'Starting to Fly' with a slightly faster tempo, different guitar solo and additional guitar during the outro. The transition between the first chorus and second verse was longer. Chester also sang the verses on a higher key.

    Debut(s):

    - These are the first ever public performances of 'Painted', 'The Endless Highway', 'My Bluest Day', 'What's In The Eye?' and 'How Would You Be'. According to Jonathan Krause, 'Wake Me' was originally a Sean Dowdell And His Friends song, so Chester and Sean likely performed this song before in some form. According to Chris Goad, 'Starting To Fly' was also performed with Sean Dowdell And His Friends? before Grey Daze.

    Other Notes:

    - According to the band's bassist at the time Jonathan Krause, the band went with the spelling "Gray Daze" during the band's earliest days before finally changing it to "Grey" a few months later.

    - Even though the band's flyer for the show didn't list any other bands, according to January 21st, 1994 issue of Arizona Republic, the main performers for the night were Lemon Krayola.

    - After the ninth song Chester commented: "That was a world premiere. This song has never been played before, except a couple of small times. It's not even named yet". According to Sean Dowdell, the song's actual title is 'Forever'.

    Other Notes:

    - The file with a recording of this show didn't have the date specified, but we had a clue to figure it out. On the recording Chester mentions that their brand new album No Sun Today is getting released "tonight". According to Chester's speech from a recording of another Electric Ballroom show No Sun Today was released on May 23rd, 1997. We happened to have a show on this date in the guide before we got our hands on the recording, so, for the time being, we can assume the date is correct.

    - During the show Chester mentions it is called "Best Of Phoenix 2" and thanks all of the other local bands that played before Grey Daze. The gig's headliner Puzzle Gut isn't a local band though, so we just assume they were the special guests for the event and it featured a lot of bands that weren't listed in the newspaper ad we have (see below).

    - Grey Daze were the resident band for Electric Ballroom and played a huge number of shows there during the years of its existence.
