'From Zero' Listening Party with Mike

Recommended Posts

This thing was hilarious, a non-stop barrage of messages. Linkin Park now has a new flex - crashing Spotify (or at least the interactive / track-playback Spotify APIs that HiFi Labs used).

EDIT: thanks to @letdownagain for the 6 missing lines at the beginning

Mike Shinoda: LP fans have countdown PTSD

Mike Shinoda: hahahahaha

Mike Shinoda: Welcome to FROM ZERO. This choir sound was in the last chours of Emptiness Machine

Mike Shinoda: The voice in the intro is a kid. He is not pleased you keep thinking he is Emily

Mike Shinoda: The audio is pausing for me as well. I assume the team is working on it. But it gives us more time to chat

Mike Shinoda: Let's see how it goes from here. Also, the choir at the end of the album reverses into the choir at the beginning of the album (a loop)

Mike Shinoda: TEM now. These live drums: I recorded then sampled then played on a sampler

Mike Shinoda: TEM is one of the oldest songs on the album. Written before "Already Over" I think. Maybe before "In My Head" came out, possibly

Mike Shinoda: TEM originally only had my voice on it. We added Emily when the album was really starting to come together

masciolib: Honestly at this point I'm just here for the commentary
Mike Shinoda: hahahah that may be the plan. Not sure how the playback is gonna work!

Mike Shinoda: Spotify is having a problem. Let's do this everyone start from the top, and hit play when I say..
Mike Shinoda: ready?
Mike Shinoda: go
Mike Shinoda: OK TEM is starting NOW

Maria Muñoz: Mike, what was going through your mind when you finished recording the last song of the album?
Mike Shinoda: It was SO SURREAL

Amanda Bolognini Nascimento: How/where did you record this choir?
Mike Shinoda: The choir on "intro" and TEM is just lots of layers of me and Emily

Mike Shinoda: Colin recorded the drums from TEM at East West studios in Hollywood
Mike Shinoda: Don't worry about Spotify, it's ****** hahaha

Pierrick Herold: How was the stress before the comeback livestream, beginning first notes of TEM live?
Mike Shinoda: it was the most stressful thing I've ever done hahahaha

Amanda Bolognini Nascimento: It was not Emily in the intro, guys 🤣
Mike Shinoda: Correct. Young male person in the studio

Renan Coelho Fernandes: Cut the bridge is amazing. Can we expect to hear it live in Brazil next year?
Mike Shinoda: I can't PROMISE anything, but we hope to rehearse all the FZ songs so we're prepared to play them. But some might be a rotation, not sure

jackmazta: Mike, is colin as badass as he appears
Mike Shinoda: indeed

Mike Shinoda: Don't worry about listening in real time with me, just listen through and we'll talk about the album

Christian: what is the most beatiful thing about new concerts?
Mike Shinoda: I love seeing how many new faces are at the show, right next to people that have seen us dozens of times. It's a beautiful community

georgiawinship: Was it intentional to make Two Faced the child of One Step Closer? :)
Mike Shinoda: I think that comparison is funny, I see the similarities but it's seems like a comparison made by people who don't know our catalog super well

djou-karl: what compelled you to make FZ this diverse ? There's a little bit of every LP era in it
Mike Shinoda: That was somewhat intentional, we did want to make it a well-rounded album without re-treading our own material too much. Colin was like "when you write, it just sounds like LP a lot of times"

Rubens Ferreira: Did youcompose Heavy is the Crown for League of Legends or did they choose a ready made one from the album?
Mike Shinoda: I wrote the lyrics when I was working on that track for ARCANCE. But then we were writing HITC, and Em and I tried those words on it, and it just fit.

Mike Shinoda: I'm listening to CASUALTY now btw

Michael: Why did you pick Causality as the unreleased song to play live in Dallas?
Mike Shinoda: bc its awesome to play live

masciolib: As someone who loves the album, I get defensive when people don't like the album. How do you handle criticism??
Mike Shinoda: because I don't base my opinion on other people's opinions, hahaha

mayziegrobe: was casualty one of the songs that had only your voice before emily joined in? if it was, did you scream just like her? hahah
Mike Shinoda: We both did our vocals on the same day(s)

Renan Coelho Fernandes: Why haven't you sang like that before Casualty and what do you think of your voice in that song?
Mike Shinoda: I just wanted to try something new. I think Joe may have suggested something loud, and I was thinking of some old Hardcore songs that had vocals like that

Paul Gardiner: Mike it was you who was wearing screamy pants on Casualty!
Mike Shinoda: ha! true!

Mike Shinoda: Overflow took a lot of tries to get right. We did half a dozen choruses, sometimes with other people. But I wrote this one by myself, and when the band came in one day, I was like "I think I figured that song out"

Mike Shinoda: The end guitar part on Overflow was played me, with a collab on the effects and sounds by me and Colin
Mike Shinoda: The cassette thing between Overflow and Two Faced is an old Xero tape.

Gabriel C. Polidoro: Who had the ideas for the album cover? They're so cool!
Mike Shinoda: Collab between Joe, me and Frank Maddocks (on the concept)

Sabrina Damacena: i loved that teddy swims helped with overflow. he is amazing!
Mike Shinoda: Teddy's great!

Patzi 🙃: I CAN HEAR THE FUTURE COLIN
Mike Shinoda: WE SAY THIS ALL THE TIME

AngelBlue88: The video is chaos I love Emily’s dancing
Mike Shinoda: TWO FACED was the first time we say Em's MOVES -- the best!

MiliJ4rda: How Emily joined the band?
Mike Shinoda: We did a lot of sessions with different people in the room (sometimes just LP, sometimes others) and we found ourselves inviting Em and Colin back more and more often

Mike Shinoda: STAINED just started for me

Lucas Oliveira:
Mike Shinoda:

rw13-gb:was it always the intention to use the livestream stage for the TF video?
Mike Shinoda: It was a last minute idea

Thiago Moraes: Mike, do you have a favorite song from the album? If so, why do you like it?
Mike Shinoda: I like all my babies the same

Claudio Rodrigues: How did Teddy Swims colaborate in FZ?
Mike Shinoda: He came in for a few writing sessions, and sang some background vocals on the Overflow demo. But once Emily really "joined" the band, it seemed more natural to have me & her do all the vocals

Franzi: Was Brad involved in writing from zero ?
Mike Shinoda: Yup! He came in later in the process, but was super involved and helpful in putting it together. IGYEIH is actually a demo Brad and I started together

Martyvoe: Mike, the lasers in between of the show parts look so cool, what do they represent? I got goosebumps seeing them on the first livestream
Mike Shinoda: The production and lasers have a story and theme, but I think it's better if I don't try to explain it, hahaha

Dylan Shae Hernandez: Will we see in studio footage? Like behind the scenes making of FZ?
Mike Shinoda: LPTV is ongoing. Make sure to subscribe to LP's Youtube page

Mike Shinoda: GOOD THINGS GO

your gay agender: what is the voice that we hear at the beginning of IGYEIH?
Mike Shinoda: Thats Emily

Jackeline Zapata: u and emily’s back and forth on this song ATEEE
Mike Shinoda: ayyyyyy thank you. I loved that part

Luiza Tzaschel: the lyrics in good things go are insanely good
Mike Shinoda: The rap verse in the bridge is probably from 2019 or even earlier

Mike Shinoda: Lots of people saying Good Things Go is a favorite on the album. Love that, I didn't expect it. I really like this song

caiopavanf-br: Good things go is about Chester?
Mike Shinoda: No, it's really a relationship song, about a few of our stories combined together

Jessica Black: i love the lyrics of Good Things Go, did you write it all by yourself or with others?
Mike Shinoda: I think the majority of the words were me, Colin, and Jake Torrey? But the whole band worked on the song, as usual

Polly:Thank you so much, waiting for you tour!
Mike Shinoda: We're very excited to play! Tickets are starting to be available for all 2025 shows on linkinpark.com

Mike Shinoda: Come to the shows. Bring your friends. Make some signs, make some bracelets, sing your hearts out. We're gonna have so much fun

Mike Shinoda: Thank you all for being here. We love and appreciate you. See you on tour! B Y E

Mike Shinoda: You can stay and chat with each other and play the album again if you like hahaha

TheGinge's post above is pretty comprehensive, but I'm adding the early bits that got missed that I was able to get by screen recording, plus Mike's last message after saying bye. I think with that, it's everything.
