    - Released as hidden "Easter egg" on the 'Frat Party at the Pancake Festival' DVD, this performance of 'Esaul' was likely done at Mike's apartment, the location of which is given in the Hybrid Theory EP booklet. This was on Stocker Street in Glendale, the source of the "Ten PM Stocker" alternate band name idea and the story of Mike's neighbors getting mad about the noise while Chester was recording the vocals for 'One Step Closer'.

    - "Mike Galaxy Presents" Indy Hits Showcase was a weekly event aimed on music industry exposure for independent bands. It was usually held every Thursday at the now closed club called The Gig-Hollywood. Mike Galaxy himself confirmed the show for LPLive and believes this was Chester's very first show with the band: "They were signed after labels saw them at my showcase [...] Unfortunately I do not remember the date of their performance. I think it was the first show ever with singer Chester Bennington. Yes at the Gig on Melrose which is closed several years ago".

    - The show was added to the guide in November 2016.

Show Category: showwithoutsources Notes: Yes Song No 1: 01 Song Name 1: Unknown Other Notes:

    - March 20th, 2001 article written by Mike Galaxy reads: "Formerly Halogen, Dr. Lady was one of Music Connection's best 100 unsigned bands of 2000. The band has had several gigs recently including opening for Slash at the House of Blues and for Hybrid Theory at the Troub". The band has changed it's name to Dr. Lady around early 2001, so they definitely were still called Halogen at the time. The band then ultimately changed it's name to Orson. Mike Galaxy has confirmed the show for LPLive in November 2016.

    - In the LPU chat on April 20th, 2015 Brad said his 2015.04.18 appearance at the Jakob Dylan show was his first time performing at The Troubadour. He discussed working at the Roxy and playing other clubs in Los Angeles both growing up and with Linkin Park, but said he had never played The Troubadour until this show, so it was an exciting moment for him. However, Lee Cadena's (Rap Editor at Urban Network Magazine and the creator of the Rapology CD series that started an artist management and development company in 1998 called LCM which worked with Xero) bio reads: "The first group he consulted was Xero, they changed their name to Hybrid Theory and Lee would introduce them at famous Hollywood spots like, The Whiskey and The Troubadour", so it's possible Brad is not actually correct on that statement.

  4. 1999.11.12 Fullerton, California

Photo Icon: Yes Year: 1999 Month: 11 Day: 12 Show Date: 10/12/1999 Previous Show: 2000andearlier/19990902 URL Link: 2000andearlier/19991112 Next Show: 2000andearlier/2000xxxx City: Fullerton State: California State Abbr: CA Country: United States Country Abbr: US Venue: The Backalley Venue Type: Bar/Club Event/Festival: Opening for Alien Ant Farm Event/Festival Italics: Yes Other Bands:

Alien Ant Farm, Hoobustank, *, Boy Hits Car, Kundalini

Show Category: showwithoutsources Notes: 0 Song No 1: 01 Song Name 1: Unknown Other Notes:

    - The Backalley was opened from 1997 to 2001, then closed, then reopened as The Alley, then closed around 2008-2009. The venue should not be confused with The Back Alley Bar & Grill that is a totally different (and unrelated) club that is currently situated on the same street.

    - This show was added to the live guide in September 2016 after the discovery of news clippings from November 1999 advertising the show. It was, however, addressed in a few different sources several times before that. The LATimes article from December 1st, 2005 titled "Age-appropriate entertainment" mentions: "This is actually the second go-round for Barnum's club. He ran the Backalley at this same locale from 1997 until 2001, booking mostly weekend shows (some which wound up being more historic than others, like the night when then-unknowns Hoobastank and Hybrid Theory -- later to become Linkin Park -- shared a bill)".

When rockrevoltmagazine.com asked members of Boy Hits Car about their best memories of them teaming up with big names in music industry over the years, the band members also seemingly recalled this show: "Supporting Stone Temple Pilots in Europe, playing festivals that were headlined by names like Iggy & the Stooges, Eminem, or The Prodigy, gigging at LA clubs in the mid 90’s with bands like Incubus, System of a Down, and Linkin Park before they really broke, then supporting em all years later, generally sharing stages with so many great artists and bands in general…".

Kundalini's bio on their Soundcloud page reads: "Originally formed in Nashville, Tennessee with Danny's brother Marcos on bass and Brian Rhodes singing, after a short period of time the band decided to relocate to Southern California. Ian Horak and Damian Young both played bass at various points in their history and the band enjoyed playing with several prominent bands of that time period such as: Hybrid Theory (Linkin Park), Papa Roach, Hoobastank and Alien Ant Farm".

    - This is the band's second known show in The Backalley, with the first one being their 1999.08.20 gig.

    - "Hoobustank" was the actual spelling Hoobastank went with at the time.

    - The Pricks opened Hoobastank's (spelled Hoobustank at the time) very first show in the summer of 1995 at Doug Robb's parents' backyard.

    - Hoobastank filmed their set in VHS. It was confirmed by Dan Estrin in an interview to AltWire in 2022 that the VHS includes The Pricks footage as well.

    - Members of both bands had been friends since long before The Pricks was formed and to prepare for the show they stole stages from their local high school in the middle of the night, set them up in Doug's backyard and hired security, charging a dollar for admission. Around 150 people were in attendance.

    Other Notes:

    - The Pricks was a band Brad Delson and Mark Wakefield played in before Relative Degree and Xero.

    - This date was discovered in January 2018 when researching Hybrid Theory (band) dates.

    - Reportedly, almost no one came to the show. The band took a long time to get prepared to play and ran way into their set time. The promoter told them to end their set and the band refused, so the promoter cut the sound and the band continued playing with the power to the PA off.

    - According to a different report, the band had technical problems with instruments and microphones during the show. Chester got so pissed, he threw his mic and left the stage, but Mike rushed after him promising everything will get fixed.

    - According to a member of the band Size 5, Hybrid Theory opened for Size 5 that night. The band consisted of Jay and John Kereny (Lemon Krayola), Barton Applewhite (Kongo Shock) and Chuck Moore - close friends of Chester and Grey Daze. Size 5 also served as Chester's backing band for his pre-production live session when he was preparing himself to record his audition tape for Xero. The band was also thanked by Chester in Hybrid Theory booklet.

    - According to a concert listing from Arizona Republic's August 26th, 1999 issue, the band PHD were the headlining act for the night.

    - This show was a frat house Halloween party at Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) Delta Theta Chapter at California State University. Thanks to Dave Garrett for the venue name and songs played.
    - The band members were dressed as characters from the movie Dead Presidents.
    - Xero entered the studio on August 25, 1998 to record a demo produced by Darryl Swan. Afterwards, Jeff Blue sent out the demo to record labels and the only one who showed interest was Danny Goodwin (VP of A&R at Virgin Records). He was in the audience for this show and passed on the band citing how off key Mark Wakefield sounded live.
    - In the unauthorized documentary "Conspiracy Theory", Mike Giangreco (Brad's boss at The Roxy and Whisky A Go Go) recalls the band used to borrow his sound systems for free to play at frat parties. The only condition was that they'd carry everything themselves and put them back in his garage afterwards.

    - According to Jeff Blue's "One Step Closer: From Xero to #1: Becoming Linkin Park" book, this was the band's 44th showcase and the one that got them signed to Warner Bros. Records. The band had been publicly using the Hybrid Theory name since May, but their legal name was still Xero. Kyle Christener was still in the band.
    - Jeff met Joe McEwen, head of A&R at Warner, in July 1999 while watching a show at CBGB's in New York. Joe liked their demo and decided to keep in touch with Jeff about potentially hiring him at Warner. Jeff got the job offer in August and his condition was that they'd sign Hybrid Theory, so they played a showcase for McEwen at S.I.R. - Xero opened for System Of A Down. This show in general is pretty interesting from a historical standpoint. System Of A Down was still a local/regional band (although a pretty well-established one) in 1997, in fact the period they were playing shows at places like the Whisky and the Viper Room was around the time they started getting major label attention (they were ultimately signed by none other than Rick Rubin that year), and SX-10 would have just formed not long before this show as well...it may have even been THEIR first show too. Mike said in one of the Sunset Strip Music Festival 2013-related interviews that Xero played four out of their first five shows on Sunset Strip.
    - In the HBO Reverb airing from the 2001 London Docklands show, it said that this very first show got the attention of Jeff Blue, who worked at Zomba Music at the time. He saw that they had potential but they were pretty far from actually "making it" so they got a little financial support from Zomba at the time. Jeff later said that he went on to see Xero play several shows after this to mostly empty venues with almost no one in attendance.
    - In a 2010 article published by NME, Mike described the show, “I remember that gig. I was wearing the most ridiculous thing ever. I had this white beanie hat on with blue goggles and white gloves, I think because it made me feel more like a performer and not the normal dude that I knew I was. So I had to get into costume in order to get psyched up and get into character. We were awful, just horrible but we survived.” Jeff Blue addressed this on his "One Step Closer: From Xero to #1: Becoming Linkin Park" book. He heard an audience member say Mike looked like a smurf. Jeff thought the performance was raw and energetic and that the band had potential but the audience lost interest about two minutes into the show. He wrote the following notes on a napkin: "Vocals off key. Awkward stage presence. Decent songs. Didn't connect with the audience."

    - Jeff Blue's book mentions 'Rhinestone' was recorded shortly before the show for inclusion in the cassette tape with the baby cover.
    - In a 2013 interview with Rolling Stone, Mike said, "Our very first show there we opened up for SX-10, with Sen Dog from Cypress Hill, and System of a Down. I remember really vividly that I had seen System play there before. It was the era where Incubus played there all the time, System played there quite a bit. And we played our set, which was probably 30 minutes at the time, and it was all friends. Nobody had even heard our music – they were there just to support friends. After SX-10 performed, System of a Down's set was memorable for other reasons. It turned out that a couple of the guys had smoked weed with Sen backstage and got laid out. They were incapacitated. They were two hours late to start their set because some of them were just, like, unable to function." Mike also mentioned this at the 2007 LA Club Ritual show when he said System Of A Down didn't go on "until like 1:00 in the morning" because "Daron was knocked out backstage."

    - According to Jeff Blue's "One Step Closer: From Xero to #1: Becoming Linkin Park" book, this show was a public showcase with over 30 industry scouts in the audience. This included Danny Goodwin from Virgin, Matt Aberle from Warner/Reprise, Clive Davis and Michelle Ozbourn from Arista, Tommy Mottola from Sony, Guy Oseary (who worked with Madonna) and Polly Anthony from Epic (who signed Macy Gray) as well as staff from Columbia, Capitol, Atlantic, Dreamworks and RCA. Both Jeff Blue and Danny Hayes thought this show was a bad idea because if it went bad the entire industry could decide the band wasn't worth signing, but the band insisted on playing. David Simoné from Geffen, the person who was interested in Xero, couldn't make it.
    - Before the show, Brad bribed the sound guy with $150 to make them sound good. The band was 15 minutes late and had to stop and restart the first song so Brad could re-tune his guitar. Mark Wakefield was described as being horribly off key. The band played for 30 minutes and when the lights came up only Jeff Blue, Danny Hayes, Scott Harrington and a few of the band's friends were still in the venue. They received 7 official rejections in the next 36 hours, the two executives from Geffen who wanted to hire Jeff Blue were fired, Danny Goodwin (who had shown interest in the band after listening to a demo) was fired from Virgin and Mark Wakefield was fired from Xero. Most of the rejections centered on how bad the vocals were.
    - This show was the reason the band decided to change their name to Hybrid Theory.
    - Rick Rubin, the producer of Minutes To Midnight, A Thousand Suns and Living Things, was in the audience.

    - Review of the show:

"Club-hopping in Hollywood is great. As many shows as there are on any given night, it is always a difficult task to choose when and where you want to be the most if you're an avid music fan. Late 1999, and the year 2000 have been an incredible time when it comes to new talent, which has made going to see concerts a monumental task if you're only one person. Last night, we narrowed it down.

Our friends at Andy Gould Management were intuitive enough to have forwarded us a CD advance by a band called Hybrid Theory about a month ago. Immediately taken by the sheer magnitude of talent in this band, both Brian and I were anxious to experience their live performance. Last night was only the first of hopefully many shows we will be attending in support of Linkin Park (formerly Hybrid Theory).

Emcee Mike Shinoda (one of two front men, and main rap vocalist) welcomed us and showed appreciation for their predecessors, Half Cocked (who we unfortunately missed) by thanking them for leaving the microphones smelling "fruity and fresh". After that, it was full speed ahead into what became a passionate and energetic performance by Linkin Park. The entire audience occupying the Whisky was already feeling the buzz surrounding the band that had a sound rumored to be a blend of hardcore, hip-hop, and electronic music with similar overtones from bands like Shorty, Tenfold, Simon Says, and even Professional Murder Music.

It would be an understatement to say that we were blown away. Chester Bennington (a complete Godsend on vocals) worked the crowd with his lively performance and astonishing singing voice, while Linkin Park's killer DJ Joe Hahn scratched and mixed with total style. This guy rules! Guitarist Brad Delson, sporting headphones and a great vibe, threw down with totally solid riffs that danced fluidly with the band's killer drum and bass team.

Linkin Park played an amazing set including just about all of the tracks that audiences will hear on their upcoming release in October. Needless to say, there wasn't a single Linkin Park cassette sampler left on their merch table!

Speaking to Chester after the show furthered our opinion on this great band. He candidly gave us a brief account of how he came to be a part of Linkin Park, "I'm originally from Arizona, and the rest of the guys are from here, so I was, you know, living in my car for a couple of weeks, and before you know it, things were happening. I feel really blessed right now. This is great. I'm just looking forward to getting out there [on tour]."

Keep a close eye out for the new Linkin Park release. This band is sure to explode on the scene when the word gets out further. Catch them live if you can; you'll be sorry you missed them if you don't. In the meantime, visit the band's website, at www.linkinpark.com. We sincerely appreciate and thank the band's management and publicity staff for bringing the music of Linkin Park to us."

    - This was the first show of the first national tour the band ever was a part of.

    - The show was presented by 98Rock radio station. The price of admission was only 98 cents.

    Tour Diary:

We arrived in St. Petersburg, Florida, after driving almost three-days-straight from Los Angeles (we did shower once). Fortunately, the ride was smooth and we only got really lost once (partially my fault). Unfortunately, when we arrived in St. Pete, looking forward to finally getting half-a-night's-rest, our tour manager got stuck in the hotel elevator. An hour later, the fire department had managed to free her from that evil machine. We opened up for a band called Union Underground, who we'll be touring with for the next three weeks. The show was awesome and the people we met at the State Theater were super-friendly. Special thanks to the street-teamers who were representing in the front. We can't wait to meet all the Linkin Park streat-teamers and supporters who catch us on our current tour. Keep checking the website for more journal entries and information on shows. Thanks for your support,Brad (a.k.a. Big Bad Brad)
