  1. I’ve got an itch (without a cure) that Mike and this female vocalist will intertwine in a really cool way we’re all not expecting. I think about the song The Catalyst for example, how Mike and Chester’s voices basically fuse into one in some moments of the song with a mixing trick. But imagine Mike singing intertwined with a female lead or his backing vocals done in a way that really compliments her style. Of course you could imagine his rapping but if she’s got this edge to her vocals that really serves Mike’s production than I think we’re all in for a special treat. You just gotta be open minded and throughout LP’s history they are known for 180’s and unexpected plot twists in their sound. Mike has been working with SO many vocalist including female and I can only think he’s been collecting a lot of insight using those sessions in order to move forward with something exciting. I can imagine Brad’s excitement listening to new material in Mike’s studio and I can already imagine LPTV’s of their new process. We have a lot to look forward to if this ends up being true.

Alright,  looks like the rumors were at least partially true.

About the female singer :  IMO, that is the best strategy the band could possibly go for. It should minimize comparisons with Chester and accentuate the feeling of a fresh start. I just hope the vocalist they hire will be versatile enough to handle both the smooth, vulnerable parts as well as the screamy, shouted parts. Chester could seamlessly switch between both, and I think it contributed a lot to the DNA of he band.  I'd try to be as open as can be to a new singer, but one who could only perform well on one side of the spectrum would right away loose points in my book (no pressure 😛 )

About Rob & Joe : the Rob thing is a bit the elephant in the room. Honestly: I think he is out for good. And if that's the case, that's a bummer, because he was probably the most skilled instrumentalist in the band. I am more surprised about Joe, but on the other end, I think his input on the band sound has been more "minimal" - no disrespect, of course I'd prefer him to be in.

Anyway, if true, pretty curious to see how this will all unfold!

it’s a drummer bummer. *ignore me*

  3. I totally respect Mike's opinion on it and i can only imagine how he feels having written all that music, especially in this particular time of his career. Personally, I am neutral over cover bands for LP or any band in general. I even encouraged someone to join an LP cover band because they are an amazing vocalist. To each their own, is what i say.

Oh I thought OP was talking about the light crash, but yeah I agree with this for that snare sound. And the technique you're talking about is most obvious in the beginning of Heavy imo

To me it sounds like a clap stacked on top of the snare to give it some variety. I'd really love more breakdowns of OML instrumentals, there's a lot of interesting color in there

Oh me too! I know LP filmed every album process (besides HT, maybe?) But one day we will finally get to see behind the scenes of OML and all that went into it's process. I just want a making of for that album, also for THP that would be so sick. At least we got LPTV's. But yeah all those colors in OML make it their most colorful album sonically. I am sure i'll continue to hear little sounds or quirks in the mix i didin't hear before as the years go by, that's what makes a pop record fun, more so Mike's pop production cause it's Linkin Parkified, as Pheonix would say. Lots of layers to pick out inside of a very polished, well thought out album.

    😮

If this rumor of Linkin Park is true than the only female that comes to mind that might pull it off is Jennifer Weist. She and Mike Shinoda played together A Place For My Head in Belin 2019.

woah i love her energy and sound. I personally hope this is all true about a female lead. Females bring an energy males simply cannot, not even Chester, I'm sorry bit it's just true.

How exactly are they too close to Chester's style? Is it just because they are both good vocalists who can sing beautifully and scream? The music they make sounds nothing like anything Linkin Park has done and their vocal styles sound nothing like Chester's.

Linkin Park has always been a "we need to play all of our singles" kind of band. They need someone who is versatile in order to perform their greatest hits live and in order to keep experimenting with new genres like they have always done. It wouldn't be Linkin Park anymore if they just stick to playing super generic music that anyone in the world can perform.

I know it wont ever happen but i seriously thought the singer from sum 41 was a great fit after that faint performance with shinoda. He has a great tone for Linkin Park moving forward but even he knows he's no replacement for chester which i agree, but still his tone is very fitting IMO for the band's music.

About the instrumental: I really like the guitar work on the track. It's subtle, smooth, and full of finesse.

On the other end, I don't get why the drop hit (of whatever you call it) was mixed or done to sound so..... thin?  The best example I have of it is at the 1:27 mark. When the tension is released, there is that "splaaah" sound (drum/sample/both). And honestly, that sound, I find it unpleasant, to the point it slightly, and non-metaphorically, hurt my ears.

Weird choices on the sound-design department have been my biggest complain about that era in general - this is another occurrence of it.

You've got a keen ear for audio engineering if you can pinpoint such small details like this. I noticed it's then used in the ''fire'' chorus section, so i believe that drop hit is a blended snare sound to help set up in that moment the chorus snare, cause it's the same ongoing sound from there. That had to be a mike move, because i learned this technique from Mike and apply it to my songs sometimes. Every other snare, I'll add a sampled layer or a reverb tail or something so the snare doesn't sound to redundant in its tone.

Damn, it's like fast food. Instant delivery.

haha! Good thing I am in the middle of making a new EP so It was simply getting a rip of his acapella from the OG track 4 weeks ago off YouTube and working some studio magic around his vocals.

  9. Personally, i see no issue with the title nor the album cover. ATS is pretty basic, but it worked. I think the band went with something simplistic because i's recognizable to all generations of LP. It makes sense, plus ''Papercuts'', if that really is the title, seems like the band knew Chester's favorite song was papercut, so maybe it's to honor him for that and if that is the case, that's pretty awesome. Chester freaking loved that song, i think he would have loved the title to.

Theres always a reason to criticize... some of you guys deserve the band just calling it quits and going silent

lol imagine calling it quits and being upset over an album cover and title... just completely throw yourself out the window lol xD And disregard the music inside.

We'd never even heard of "Lost" before it was out. We knew the demo, yes, but the final song is so different it almost doesn't count. We barely even recognized it because the vocal hook had completely changed.

I'm just one person and I make a minimum of 55 demos a year as a hobbyist (one a week!), I can't imagine what sits on LP's drives that they just haven't told us about.

Ughhh this is so cool to wonder about! Also, i don't know if this is really happening but to hear this youtuber mention ''Out Of Reach'' is really cool to hear. Seems like there's a lot of talk and were prob going to get a secondary single. Fingers crossed!

Jeez, now I feel bad for getting people's hopes up! It's probably not gonna happen guys-- but it is pretty fun to think about.

Ehh, honesty just talking about these things is what makes these hype trains so fun. While we’re all on board we might as well.

Could they accomplish that with a recent studio recording of Looking for an Answer?

Someone probably has more info than me on this but the last I recall of this song is what Mike said at the Hollywood bowl and that’s a maybe! My curiosity is spiked regarding this song and its future. It would be amazing to see it make its way to the airwaves as a finished track during the return of Linkin Park.

Track 14 being a surprise new single from the band recorded recently would be the biggest swerve.

I'm not holding out much hope for that. But I can certainly dream. It would be a good place to re-establish something if you're not dropping an album soon. Like, "hey, we're active again, here's something we all like and are releasing as a statement of intent, see you next year". Or something.

Now to think of that, it would be such a badass but also original (has anyone done this before?) way to release a new comeback single. How else do you get the attention of EVERY era of LP fan there is to say ''Hey, here's why you loved us, but here's a chance to stick around''.

I would not include that because it's areally rough demo, totally lacks a chorus and a bridge, not ebven Mikre mumbling "nananana", but it's good to have it

I only saw this as a window of opportunity to share this cover of A6 i rapped on with Matt Se7en where we also wrote to complete the song using some original parts. Maybe you'd find it interesting!

Yeah we are talking about 6 unreleased songs (MTV, FM, Lost, Massive, Healing Foot and Friendly Fire) with vocals (possibly 7 with track n. 14 of this release)in a year. Amazing

basically, we got a new Linkin Park EP. I've got an itch these tracks are only the first of so many more unreleased tracks. If we take into consideration MTM and moving forward from there.
