This included Danny Goodwin from Virgin, Matt Aberle from Warner/Reprise, Clive Davis and Michelle Ozbourn from Arista, Tommy Mottola from Sony, Guy Oseary (who worked with Madonna) and Polly Anthony from Epic (who signed Macy Gray) as well as staff from Columbia, Capitol, Atlantic, Dreamworks and RCA. Both Jeff Blue and Danny Hayes thought this show was a bad idea because if it went bad the entire industry could decide the band wasn't worth signing, but the band insisted on playing. David Simoné from Geffen, the person who was interested in Xero, couldn't make it.

- Before the show, Brad bribed the sound guy with $150 to make them sound good. The band was 15 minutes late and had to stop and restart the first song so Brad could re-tune his guitar. Mark Wakefield was described as being horribly off key. The band played for 30 minutes and when the lights came up only Jeff Blue, Danny Hayes, Scott Harrington and a few of the band's friends were still in the venue. They received 7 official rejections in the next 36 hours, the two executives from Geffen who wanted to hire Jeff Blue were fired, Danny Goodwin (who had shown interest in the band after listening to a demo) was fired from Virgin and Mark Wakefield was fired from Xero. Most of the rejections centered on how bad the vocals were.
- This show was the reason the band decided to change their name to Hybrid Theory.
- Rick Rubin, the producer of Minutes To Midnight, A Thousand Suns and Living Things, was in the audience.

- Review of the show:
"Club-hopping in Hollywood is great. As many shows as there are on any given night, it is always a difficult task to choose when and where you want to be the most if you're an avid music fan. Late 1999, and the year 2000 have been an incredible time when it comes to new talent, which has made going to see concerts a monumental task if you're only one person. Last night, we narrowed it down.
Our friends at Andy Gould Management were intuitive enough to have forwarded us a CD advance by a band called Hybrid Theory about a month ago. Immediately taken by the sheer magnitude of talent in this band, both Brian and I were anxious to experience their live performance. Last night was only the first of hopefully many shows we will be attending in support of Linkin Park (formerly Hybrid Theory).
Emcee Mike Shinoda (one of two front men, and main rap vocalist) welcomed us and showed appreciation for their predecessors, Half Cocked (who we unfortunately missed) by thanking them for leaving the microphones smelling "fruity and fresh". After that, it was full speed ahead into what became a passionate and energetic performance by Linkin Park. The entire audience occupying the Whisky was already feeling the buzz surrounding the band that had a sound rumored to be a blend of hardcore, hip-hop, and electronic music with similar overtones from bands like Shorty, Tenfold, Simon Says, and even Professional Murder Music.
It would be an understatement to say that we were blown away. Chester Bennington (a complete Godsend on vocals) worked the crowd with his lively performance and astonishing singing voice, while Linkin Park's killer DJ Joe Hahn scratched and mixed with total style. This guy rules! Guitarist Brad Delson, sporting headphones and a great vibe, threw down with totally solid riffs that danced fluidly with the band's killer drum and bass team.
Linkin Park played an amazing set including just about all of the tracks that audiences will hear on their upcoming release in October. Needless to say, there wasn't a single Linkin Park cassette sampler left on their merch table!
Speaking to Chester after the show furthered our opinion on this great band. He candidly gave us a brief account of how he came to be a part of Linkin Park, "I'm originally from Arizona, and the rest of the guys are from here, so I was, you know, living in my car for a couple of weeks, and before you know it, things were happening. I feel really blessed right now. This is great. I'm just looking forward to getting out there [on tour]."
Keep a close eye out for the new Linkin Park release. This band is sure to explode on the scene when the word gets out further. Catch them live if you can; you'll be sorry you missed them if you don't. In the meantime, visit the band's website, at www.linkinpark.com. We sincerely appreciate and thank the band's management and publicity staff for bringing the music of Linkin Park to us."

Time: 31:52 mins
Format: DVD (M) / 2.19 GB
Comments: Full show. Released by LPLive on August 2, 2013 as a part of the Sunset Strip Music Festival "throwback week". Show was streamed online before the DVD was posted. Forum post: "There simply is not a better time for this show to surface than right now, to end the SSMF "throwback week" with the Linkin Park fansites and the LPU. What show you might ask? Linkin Park at the Roxy on September 5th, 2000! This show was recorded by the band for a potential 'One Step Closer' live video, but until recently, there was no video out there of the song, much less the entire show. We didn't even have a setlist!"

- The band messes up a lot during the show - Brad forgot to change his guitar setting correctly on the 'Runaway' intro, Mike messes up the lyrics on the bridge of 'And One', and Brad broke a string on 'One Step Closer' for example.
- Before 'In The End', Mike asks if anyone heard them on the radio before the show. He dedicates the show to everyone that helped get them on the radio.
- Crowdsurfers come on the stage and jump back into the crowd on 'A Place For My Head' and 'One Step Closer'.
- Chester thanks KROQ after 'One Step Closer'.
Other Notes:- According to Jeff Blue's "One Step Closer: From Xero to #1: Becoming Linkin Park" book, this show was sold out and only happened because of the success of 'One Step Closer' on KROQ.
- The show was recorded by the band for their single 'One Step Closer': "Linkin Park will be recording their show at the Roxy in Los Angeles on September 5th and will possibly using some of the live footage from it in the forthcoming video for their current single, "One Step Closer." The track is the first single from the group's upcoming debut album "Hybrid Theory" which was produced by Don Gilmore and will see a release on October 24th through Warner Bros."- Footage from this show was used in the 'Points Of Authority' music video.

- This was Scott Koziol's last show with Linkin Park. According to Jeff Blue's "One Step Closer: From Xero to #1: Becoming Linkin Park" book, a couple of days after Halloween he had lunch with Brad and Phoenix who announced Phoenix was returning to the band.
- In late 2000, fansites posted that Linkin Park would be performing on an upcoming episode of "Farmclub." LPLive found this while researching the band's past history and in 2017 finally figured out what it was. On July 21st, the day after Chester passed, Jonathan Solin posted on Facebook, "Years ago, when I worked for the great Farmclub, I was sent to interview an unknown band at the old Palace in Hollywood. We interviewed Linkin Park in a ratty dressing room at the venue and they came off as young, likeable, funny, goofy guys. When interview over, Chester ran down street to give us free tix to the show that night. It was a great show. We never aired that segment cuz they weren't known yet. A month later, the album came out and exploded. They had a ton of hits and I liked them very much. This was the song they played for us that day." This confirms the date and performance. The video is unreleased.

Traffic was completely jammed.
- The band performed a soundcheck before the show while the crowd was there. 'Points Of Authority' and 'Forgotten' are confirmed by the video recording but it's possible other songs were played too during soundcheck.- After the show, the band signed autographs on free calendars that were given out in Best Buy.
- We do not have a list of other bands at the show, but Linkin Park headlined.
- In 2015's podcast with LP Association, Mike mentioned that people still come up to him and say that they saw Linkin Park play in the parking lot of a Best Buy, referring to this show.
- The Kottonmouth Kings Tour was in Norfolk, VA at The Boathouse this day, but Linkin Park played this radio show instead. This was the second radio show in two months that caused LP to skip shows in Norfolk. A press question came up about this later...
Q: "Linkin Park has been scheduled to be here in Norfolk, Virginia twice, and each time they have chosen to play a radio show instead. This is happening again on November 11th. I told the band when I met them in Richmond to come to Norfolk, but each chance they've had they've played somewhere else. What do you have against Norfolk?"
LINKIN PARK - Mike: "I've never been to Norfolk but I hope to play there someday. The unfortunate thing is that when our label or our management hears of a radio event where we can play in front of a large number of people, they'll usually pull us out of a smaller show so that we can play there. It's just a coincidence that it's happened a couple times in Norfolk. We have nothing against it, we have a bunch of street teamers from there, in fact. We hope to play there at some point."

In an interview to Brighton Lee Sagal in front of the venue Andy Gould said: "Came here seven years ago with Rob McDermott, my old partner. We saw a band called... what they're called? Xero. X-E-R-O. Changed their name to Hybrid Theory, changed their name to Linkin Park. Played in front of ten people here. I was [managing Linkin Park] for a time. But sometimes you just see, you know, you see the [talent]. And it was Rob McDermott. So I stood there like 'I don't know if this band is good or not' but he believed that passion was talent. Got that wrong every time."

Show Category: showwithoutsources Notes: Yes Song No 1: 01 Song Name 1: Unknown Other Notes:- "Mike Galaxy Presents" Indy Hits Showcase was a weekly event aimed on music industry exposure for independent bands. It was usually held every Thursday at the now closed club called The Gig-Hollywood. Mike Galaxy himself confirmed the show for LPLive and believes this was Chester's very first show with the band: "They were signed after labels saw them at my showcase [...] Unfortunately I do not remember the date of their performance. I think it was the first show ever with singer Chester Bennington. Yes at the Gig on Melrose which is closed several years ago".
- The show was added to the guide in November 2016.

Show Category: showwithoutsources Notes: Yes Song No 1: 01 Song Name 1: Unknown Other Notes:- March 20th, 2001 article written by Mike Galaxy reads: "Formerly Halogen, Dr. Lady was one of Music Connection's best 100 unsigned bands of 2000. The band has had several gigs recently including opening for Slash at the House of Blues and for Hybrid Theory at the Troub". The band has changed it's name to Dr. Lady around early 2001, so they definitely were still called Halogen at the time. The band then ultimately changed it's name to Orson. Mike Galaxy has confirmed the show for LPLive in November 2016.
- In the LPU chat on April 20th, 2015 Brad said his 2015.04.18 appearance at the Jakob Dylan show was his first time performing at The Troubadour. He discussed working at the Roxy and playing other clubs in Los Angeles both growing up and with Linkin Park, but said he had never played The Troubadour until this show, so it was an exciting moment for him. However, Lee Cadena's (Rap Editor at Urban Network Magazine and the creator of the Rapology CD series that started an artist management and development company in 1998 called LCM which worked with Xero) bio reads: "The first group he consulted was Xero, they changed their name to Hybrid Theory and Lee would introduce them at famous Hollywood spots like, The Whiskey and The Troubadour", so it's possible Brad is not actually correct on that statement.

Show Number: 1 Show Number Total: 1 Show Category: showwithoutsources Notes: 0 Song No 1: 01 Song Name 1: Unknown Other Notes:- This is the only show that Relative Degree played together. The band consisted of Brad, Rob, Mark Wakefield, and Dave Garrett (bass player from the band Karma).
- The show was filmed on Mark Wakefield's camcorder.
- In the LPU 1.0 Newsletter, Rob said, "Brad and I, along with the bass player from Karma and some other high school friends started our own band called Relative Degree. Mike was making beats for a lot of local MCs at this time, but would come by and watch us practice sometimes. He never joined the band but would occasionally put his samples into our songs. Relative Degree sounded a lot like the band 311- it was rock with a funky incorporation of hip hop and rap elements. Our dream for the band was to play a gig at The Roxy, a popular club for up and coming bands, located on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, CA. When the goal was reached, the band just stopped practicing and lost focus, eventually leading to a break up and a separation of ways."
- An MTV article from 2002 said, "It all began when Bourdon and Delson were in high school and played together in a band called Relative Degree. "We set a goal to play one show at the Roxy [in West Hollywood]," Bourdon said. "That was our big goal, so we wrote 12 songs, rehearsed for a year, played that show at the Roxy and then broke up. That was the end of Relative Degree." Shinoda, a classmate of Delson's and Bourdon's, crashed a few Relative Degree practices and fostered a strong friendship with Delson. He created a few samples for them but was more interested in making beats for local MCs. "We always just figured we were in two different worlds," said Delson, whose head looks naked when not wrapped in his signature headphones."
- In a 2011 LPU chat, Rob said, "Relative Degree played 1 show and then finished, their goal was to sell out the Roxy so when they accomplished that goal they stopped."
- The date of this performance was confirmed in the MTV The Ride documentary. The image included on this page is taken from that documentary.
- Show photos provided by Dave Garrett. One of them was used in the artwork for the Xero demo tapes.

Taper: Marc Ostrick
Time: 2.5 hours~
Format: ?
Comments: Filmed by Marc Ostrick for his "Lockout" documentary series that was first uploaded to YouTube in 2006 (1, 2). For the full raw footage, over $10,000 is wanted.
Notes: Yes Song No 1: xx Song Name 1: Rhinestone Song Notes 1: Forgotten demo Song No 2: xx Song Name 2: Slip Song Notes 2: Post LPU 11 Version Song No 3: xx Song Name 3: Esaul Song Notes 3: A Place For My Head demo Show Notes:- In the video footage that is shown during the documentary, we can see Hybrid Theory rehearsing three songs. The rehearsal was two and a half hours long and until the full footage is obtained, the setlist is incomplete. They played early versions of 'A Place For My Head' ('Esaul' at the time) and 'Forgotten' ('Rhinestone' at the time) as well as 'Slip', which was unknown from 2006 until 2011, when it was released on the LP Underground 11 album. While we know 'Esaul' and 'Rhinestone' were definitely played live, this is the only known performance of 'Slip'.
- The performance of 'Slip' is a different version of the song (probably "further along" song-wise/a more worked-on version) than the version released on the LP Underground 11 album.
- Joe is seen scratching DJ Qbert's "100mph Backsliding Turkey Kuts" vinyl while playing a beat from DJ Babu's "Super Duck Breaks...The Saga Begins."
Other Notes:- The band's rehearsal space at the time called HiFi Hollywood was located on Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. They would rehearse there for upwards of six hours a day during the week.
- Scott Koziol is on bass in this performance.
- The date for this rehearsal was found in May 2016. The exact name of the rehearsal studio was found in October 2016.

1999.11.12 Fullerton, California
Photo Icon: Yes Year: 1999 Month: 11 Day: 12 Show Date: 10/12/1999 Previous Show: 2000andearlier/19990902 URL Link: 2000andearlier/19991112 Next Show: 2000andearlier/2000xxxx City: Fullerton State: California State Abbr: CA Country: United States Country Abbr: US Venue: The Backalley Venue Type: Bar/Club Event/Festival: Opening for Alien Ant Farm Event/Festival Italics: Yes Other Bands:Alien Ant Farm, Hoobustank, *, Boy Hits Car, Kundalini
Show Category: showwithoutsources Notes: 0 Song No 1: 01 Song Name 1: Unknown Other Notes:- The Backalley was opened from 1997 to 2001, then closed, then reopened as The Alley, then closed around 2008-2009. The venue should not be confused with The Back Alley Bar & Grill that is a totally different (and unrelated) club that is currently situated on the same street.
- This show was added to the live guide in September 2016 after the discovery of news clippings from November 1999 advertising the show. It was, however, addressed in a few different sources several times before that. The LATimes article from December 1st, 2005 titled "Age-appropriate entertainment" mentions: "This is actually the second go-round for Barnum's club. He ran the Backalley at this same locale from 1997 until 2001, booking mostly weekend shows (some which wound up being more historic than others, like the night when then-unknowns Hoobastank and Hybrid Theory -- later to become Linkin Park -- shared a bill)".
When rockrevoltmagazine.com asked members of Boy Hits Car about their best memories of them teaming up with big names in music industry over the years, the band members also seemingly recalled this show: "Supporting Stone Temple Pilots in Europe, playing festivals that were headlined by names like Iggy & the Stooges, Eminem, or The Prodigy, gigging at LA clubs in the mid 90’s with bands like Incubus, System of a Down, and Linkin Park before they really broke, then supporting em all years later, generally sharing stages with so many great artists and bands in general…".
Kundalini's bio on their Soundcloud page reads: "Originally formed in Nashville, Tennessee with Danny's brother Marcos on bass and Brian Rhodes singing, after a short period of time the band decided to relocate to Southern California. Ian Horak and Damian Young both played bass at various points in their history and the band enjoyed playing with several prominent bands of that time period such as: Hybrid Theory (Linkin Park), Papa Roach, Hoobastank and Alien Ant Farm".
- This is the band's second known show in The Backalley, with the first one being their 1999.08.20 gig.
- "Hoobustank" was the actual spelling Hoobastank went with at the time.
- If you happen to have or know a full or partial setlist for this show, please let us know!
