This show in general is pretty interesting from a historical standpoint. System Of A Down was still a local/regional band (although a pretty well-established one) in 1997, in fact the period they were playing shows at places like the Whisky and the Viper Room was around the time they started getting major label attention (they were ultimately signed by none other than Rick Rubin that year), and SX-10 would have just formed not long before this show as well...it may have even been THEIR first show too. Mike said in one of the Sunset Strip Music Festival 2013-related interviews that Xero played four out of their first five shows on Sunset Strip.
- In the HBO Reverb airing from the 2001 London Docklands show, it said that this very first show got the attention of Jeff Blue, who worked at Zomba Music at the time. He saw that they had potential but they were pretty far from actually "making it" so they got a little financial support from Zomba at the time. Jeff later said that he went on to see Xero play several shows after this to mostly empty venues with almost no one in attendance.
- In a 2010 article published by NME, Mike described the show, “I remember that gig. I was wearing the most ridiculous thing ever. I had this white beanie hat on with blue goggles and white gloves, I think because it made me feel more like a performer and not the normal dude that I knew I was. So I had to get into costume in order to get psyched up and get into character. We were awful, just horrible but we survived.” Jeff Blue addressed this on his "One Step Closer: From Xero to #1: Becoming Linkin Park" book. He heard an audience member say Mike looked like a smurf. Jeff thought the performance was raw and energetic and that the band had potential but the audience lost interest about two minutes into the show. He wrote the following notes on a napkin: "Vocals off key. Awkward stage presence. Decent songs. Didn't connect with the audience."- Jeff Blue's book mentions 'Rhinestone' was recorded shortly before the show for inclusion in the cassette tape with the baby cover.
- In a 2013 interview with Rolling Stone, Mike said, "Our very first show there we opened up for SX-10, with Sen Dog from Cypress Hill, and System of a Down. I remember really vividly that I had seen System play there before. It was the era where Incubus played there all the time, System played there quite a bit. And we played our set, which was probably 30 minutes at the time, and it was all friends. Nobody had even heard our music – they were there just to support friends. After SX-10 performed, System of a Down's set was memorable for other reasons. It turned out that a couple of the guys had smoked weed with Sen backstage and got laid out. They were incapacitated. They were two hours late to start their set because some of them were just, like, unable to function." Mike also mentioned this at the 2007 LA Club Ritual show when he said System Of A Down didn't go on "until like 1:00 in the morning" because "Daron was knocked out backstage."- If you happen to have or know a full or partial setlist for this show, please let us know!

Show Number: 1 Show Number Total: 1 Show Category: showwithoutsources Notes: 0 Song No 1: 01 Song Name 1: Unknown Other Notes:- This is the only show that Relative Degree played together. The band consisted of Brad, Rob, Mark Wakefield, and Dave Garrett (bass player from the band Karma).
- The show was filmed on Mark Wakefield's camcorder.
- In the LPU 1.0 Newsletter, Rob said, "Brad and I, along with the bass player from Karma and some other high school friends started our own band called Relative Degree. Mike was making beats for a lot of local MCs at this time, but would come by and watch us practice sometimes. He never joined the band but would occasionally put his samples into our songs. Relative Degree sounded a lot like the band 311- it was rock with a funky incorporation of hip hop and rap elements. Our dream for the band was to play a gig at The Roxy, a popular club for up and coming bands, located on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, CA. When the goal was reached, the band just stopped practicing and lost focus, eventually leading to a break up and a separation of ways."
- An MTV article from 2002 said, "It all began when Bourdon and Delson were in high school and played together in a band called Relative Degree. "We set a goal to play one show at the Roxy [in West Hollywood]," Bourdon said. "That was our big goal, so we wrote 12 songs, rehearsed for a year, played that show at the Roxy and then broke up. That was the end of Relative Degree." Shinoda, a classmate of Delson's and Bourdon's, crashed a few Relative Degree practices and fostered a strong friendship with Delson. He created a few samples for them but was more interested in making beats for local MCs. "We always just figured we were in two different worlds," said Delson, whose head looks naked when not wrapped in his signature headphones."
- In a 2011 LPU chat, Rob said, "Relative Degree played 1 show and then finished, their goal was to sell out the Roxy so when they accomplished that goal they stopped."
- The date of this performance was confirmed in the MTV The Ride documentary. The image included on this page is taken from that documentary.
- Show photos provided by Dave Garrett. One of them was used in the artwork for the Xero demo tapes.

This flyer was in Mike's personal collection and was given to LPLive as the site and other fansites participated in "Throwback Week" before the show.
- Grey Daze's manager Kerry Rose talking about this show for Grey Daze Story: "About six months later, Chester called to say his new band was playing a show at the Big Fish Pub in Tempe. So, the first time I saw Hybrid Theory was in a small club in front of about 50 people. They were amazing. I knew then that they were destined for big things. Their first album was incredible. The rest is history".
- In January 2018, it was discovered that the band performed a second show in Tempe the following night.

This included Danny Goodwin from Virgin, Matt Aberle from Warner/Reprise, Clive Davis and Michelle Ozbourn from Arista, Tommy Mottola from Sony, Guy Oseary (who worked with Madonna) and Polly Anthony from Epic (who signed Macy Gray) as well as staff from Columbia, Capitol, Atlantic, Dreamworks and RCA. Both Jeff Blue and Danny Hayes thought this show was a bad idea because if it went bad the entire industry could decide the band wasn't worth signing, but the band insisted on playing. David Simoné from Geffen, the person who was interested in Xero, couldn't make it.

- Before the show, Brad bribed the sound guy with $150 to make them sound good. The band was 15 minutes late and had to stop and restart the first song so Brad could re-tune his guitar. Mark Wakefield was described as being horribly off key. The band played for 30 minutes and when the lights came up only Jeff Blue, Danny Hayes, Scott Harrington and a few of the band's friends were still in the venue. They received 7 official rejections in the next 36 hours, the two executives from Geffen who wanted to hire Jeff Blue were fired, Danny Goodwin (who had shown interest in the band after listening to a demo) was fired from Virgin and Mark Wakefield was fired from Xero. Most of the rejections centered on how bad the vocals were.
- This show was the reason the band decided to change their name to Hybrid Theory.
- Rick Rubin, the producer of Minutes To Midnight, A Thousand Suns and Living Things, was in the audience.

Show Number: 1 Show Number Total: 1 Show Category: showwithoutsources Notes: 0 Song No 1: 01 Song Name 1: Unknown Other Notes:- The band is listed as Xero 818 on the flyer. Talking to Kerrang! in 2020, Brad explained they started using this name because there were already other bands named Xero.
- The flyer is the cover of N.W.A.'s debut studio album "Straight Outta Compton" with one extra person: Mike's dad.
- This date came from Mike's wife Anna. On July 24, 2013, she posted an article on her blog entitled, "College, Sunset Strip, and Meeting Mike", which included some old Xero posters and a ticket stub. - Andy Gould (who was partners with Rob McDermott, Linkin Park's future manager) was in the audience. McDermott couldn't make it to the show. In an interview to Brighton Lee Sagal in front of the venue Andy Gould said: "Came here seven years ago with Rob McDermott, my old partner. We saw a band called... what they're called? Xero. X-E-R-O. Changed their name to Hybrid Theory, changed their name to Linkin Park. Played in front of ten people here. I was [managing Linkin Park] for a time. But sometimes you just see, you know, you see the [talent]. And it was Rob McDermott. So I stood there like 'I don't know if this band is good or not' but he believed that passion was talent. Got that wrong every time."
- Styles Of Beyond played across the street at the Whisky a Go Go. Once their show was over, they went to The Roxy to watch Xero.

- Mike messed up the lyrics in the first verse of 'In The End'.
- Chester sang part of 'Esaul' (the demo for 'A Place For My Head') during the chorus of 'A Place For My Head'.- To pump up the crowd and get them to jump, Chester screamed 'Get up! Get up! Get up when I'm talking to you!' during the bridge of 'One Step Closer'.
- One of the first instances of Chester vomiting (or pretending to vomit) on One Step Closer can be seen at this show, on 'One Step Closer', where Chester sings, "One Step Closer to the edge and I'm about to raaablarrarghraraa!"
Other Notes:- This show was not a part of a tour, it was for the radio station 98KUPD which played a lot of Linkin Park songs when they were just getting started. Many of Chester's friends and even some of his family in were attendance.
- Music photographer Jim Louvau was the singer for Victims In Ecstacy. This is the show that started his friendship and work relationship with Chester Bennington. He told Sunray Magazine in 2021: "Chester and I met in 2000 when we played a show together in Phoenix, Arizona where we are both from. Linkin Park hadn’t released Hybrid Theory yet and we were just a couple dudes in bands at that point. He watched my band’s set that night and really liked what we were doing, I honestly only caught a very short part of their set that night but we kept running into each other at shows that year and we just became friends. I was able to capture him in numerous projects over the years, on and off the stage, and he’s a huge part of where I am today as an artist. After he passed away I wanted to honor him and share work we created together so I put together a photography exhibit that showcased some of what we did over the years. The exhibit may travel to other places at some point when it’s safe to do so."- This is the first known audience recording of the band and the first DVD too.

A few days after May 9, 2000, they changed it again to Linkin Park.
- "Interesting footnote about May 27, they told the fans they were changing the name from the tiny 10x10 stage that night, I'm not sure but that could be the first show they played as Linkin Park. They may have played under the new name in Cali prior but I really dunno."- A very old and blurry ticket stub from this show helped to confirm the date and location of this performance.

I think it was the first show ever with singer Chester Bennington. Yes at the Gig on Melrose which is closed several years ago".

There was no air conditioning and it was during the middle of the day. The club is tiny. We showed up at noon and everyone who was going to be watching the show was already there drunk and wasted. We got there, set up our stuff, and got ready to play. People had been there for a while and it smelled bad. It was humid and horrible. We played a full set and two songs before the end I couldn't breathe. I was running around like a madman and got nauseous and threw up. I didn't want to throw up on anybody so I kept it in my mouth and swallowed it. And then I drank a fat glass of water to wash it away and continued with the set. Brad almost passed out. At the end of the show Brad was resting on his Marshall cabinet or he was going to pass out it was so hot. It was a very difficult show for us.

Comments: Full show. Released by LPLive on August 2, 2013 as a part of the Sunset Strip Music Festival "throwback week". Show was streamed online before the DVD was posted. Forum post: "There simply is not a better time for this show to surface than right now, to end the SSMF "throwback week" with the Linkin Park fansites and the LPU. What show you might ask? Linkin Park at the Roxy on September 5th, 2000! This show was recorded by the band for a potential 'One Step Closer' live video, but until recently, there was no video out there of the song, much less the entire show. We didn't even have a setlist!"

- The band messes up a lot during the show - Brad forgot to change his guitar setting correctly on the 'Runaway' intro, Mike messes up the lyrics on the bridge of 'And One', and Brad broke a string on 'One Step Closer' for example.
- Before 'In The End', Mike asks if anyone heard them on the radio before the show. He dedicates the show to everyone that helped get them on the radio.
- Crowdsurfers come on the stage and jump back into the crowd on 'A Place For My Head' and 'One Step Closer'.
- Chester thanks KROQ after 'One Step Closer'.
Other Notes:- According to Jeff Blue's "One Step Closer: From Xero to #1: Becoming Linkin Park" book, this show was sold out and only happened because of the success of 'One Step Closer' on KROQ.
- The show was recorded by the band for their single 'One Step Closer': "Linkin Park will be recording their show at the Roxy in Los Angeles on September 5th and will possibly using some of the live footage from it in the forthcoming video for their current single, "One Step Closer." The track is the first single from the group's upcoming debut album "Hybrid Theory" which was produced by Don Gilmore and will see a release on October 24th through Warner Bros."- Footage from this show was used in the 'Points Of Authority' music video.

- Linkin Park did not play the Kottonmouth Kings Tour show at Syracuse, NY's Lost Horizon the day before this show due to them playing this radio show in Peoria. The discovery in March 2016 of a 2000 tour itinerary confirms that they did not play the Syracuse show, which we originally had listed here in the guide for years.
- The Kottonmouth Kings Tour was in Providence, RI at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel this day, but Linkin Park played this radio show instead.
- The band signed autographs at the Zia Records booth after the show.
- Around 15.000 people attended this show, making it Linkin Park's biggest show up to that point.
