  1. If this happens, it's going to be a new low point in terms of the band's decisions.

I think the difference between an action figure and a digital avatar lies in the potential for ease of likeness misuse on a large scale to a larger audience. Sure, someone can pose an action figure or place a funko pop in a tasteless way, but an avatar in Fortnite has animations, accessories (weapons, tools, etc.), and freedom of player expression right from the get go. In addition to easy access to record clips on PC/consoles, there is much less effort needed to share something in bad taste to a playerbase/fanbase of millions.

This isn't something new though. Activision was sued by Courtney when an avatar of Kurt Cobain was able to be used in Guitar Hero to play non-Nirvana tracks. With something like Fortnite which is basically Ready Player One in terms of pop culture saturation, you can have Chester doing all kinds of silly (at best) things. Maybe they would restrict his likeness in some way.

If this release, will this be some great catastrophe that I will despair over? Nah. It's their band and Talinda and Chester's estate will do what they see fit with his image, but I will think it's lame as hell and will make me question the band's motivations. Especially with Mike being on record dismissing a Chester live hologram. Not totally the same thing but I think it's fair to say it's at least in a similar realm.

I think Friendly Fire is just ok. Not awful, but nothing great. I can totally see why they would exclude it from an album, but there is indeed some pretty bad songs on One More Light. I'd say Friendly Fire is at least better than Halfway Right and Good Goodbye. Maybe Invisible too.

Im so bummed because I think the chorus, mikes verse, and the beat to good goodbye are pretty damn good. It’s the features that completely ruin it for me. Lazy, cringe inducing lyrics. If they had not been on the track and mikes live 2nd verse was put in their place, I’d love the song. Something about it is really catchy to me and it’s pretty different than what they’ve done before.

  3. I’m pretty neutral on the whole thing. I can live without it, but its existence doesn’t really bother me. I am completely unsurprised that this release is happening and I’m actually surprised it didn’t drop sooner. LP has always been about making money. The constant merch they pump out for every little minor occasion shows that.

I don’t see myself buying this. FF isn’t my thing and I already have Qwerty on disc. Will be curious to see if these sell once the hardcore fans are done purchasing every variant. I’m willing to be I’ll see a bunch of these sitting on the lonely vinyl shelf at Walmart next to Nirvana unplugged and Billie Eilish’s latest.

Can LINKIN PARK still make huge singles post-Bennington era?  Not with the unreleased Chester vocal songs but with Shinoda-led LINKIN PARK new singles.

Doubt it. just going off the Shinoda releases, they never got close to the hype of an LP release. The rest of the members aren’t big rockstar personalities so their contributions won’t add much to the casual fans.
Now, that’s not me saying they can’t continue with Mike as a sole vocalist and be successful. They surely can. It just probably won’t be as big as anything with Chester.

The album is melt your face off exciting. Never understood why it isnt considered by the hardcore LP fans  a hidden gem and underatted, people usually shit on it.

They could have just put Until its gone on this. Wonder if its because we might get a 10 year HP anniversary, doubtful but possible.

Same here dude. It’s crazy to me. Tons of LP fans were begging for a more hard rocking album from them and when they finally delivered, nobody bought in. I thought the album was going to be huge in the rock world. Feels like I’m the only one who dug it sometimes.

  5. I always imagined an expansive  2 cd/record package for a greatest hits. I guess it's an easier sell to just market 1 disc. more affordable and all that.

    What I expected:

    Papercut

Points (maybe even replace with Reanimation version)

    > Mike since 2017 is attracted to every trend.

This has been Linkin Park the entire time.

    Hybrid Theory/Meteora - Rap Rock/Nu-Metal in the early 2000s

Minutes to Midnight - emo-tinged pop rock while bands like MCR and FOB were huge

    A Thousand Suns - electronica-infused rock music

Living Things - more electronic, dubstep elements

The Hunting Party - the only album that doesn't follow a current trend

One More Light - straight pop with a little bit of rock influence, though it did kinda feel like a pop album that hit two years too late

Don't get me wrong, I do absolutely love Linkin Park. But they've been trendchasers since the beginning. The big thing that sets LP apart from the trends they're chasing is that they usually put a unique spin on it or combine things in unique ways.

    This x100.

THP is the only time they actively went against the current trend. And it failed for them lol. I would say that with the exception of HT and Meteora, they always felt a year or two behind. OML was the most obvious case of it.

Again, no expert on the legalities and I haven't dug deep into the details of those songs like other people did. In the end his claims need to be proven by him / his legal team. I honestly have no idea what qualifies as performance or writing credits in these cases and I don't know what he got offered as compensation. My gut still tells me that he deserves money from it (with "it" being stuff he contributed to) how little it may be. Let's see how this progresses.

That's pretty much my stance. Most people here would know more about the timeline of songs/members and supposed contributions. All I really meant to say was, if he played on anything that has been released, he should be paid accordingly. Not sure why that's a controversial opinion to some. If the worst case scenario of LP/WB completely stiffing this guy is true (personally, I doubt it) I still don't see him getting paid some exorbitant amount. If I had to bet, this will settle out of court.

  8. Pay the guy for what he played on and move on. Warner isn’t hurting for cash enough to not toss what is realistically gonna be a relatively small payment. What numbers did HT20 and some LPU releases hit? Surely nothing staggering in terms of LP’s back catalog of core releases.

I don’t see this being a huge trial or some massive pay off like some people are expecting.

Be Somebody has one of the worst lyrics and chorus in the LP universe

My English is awful and even to me it sounds cringe

This release is so random I mean what's the point? More vinyls more money?

I don't even know if this is for an anniversary or somethinh

I would love to hear some unreleased demos on a release like this, I guess that Shinoda has some in his vault.

It's just an opportunity to re-issue. Artists do it all the time. Pretty cool that he's adding the deluxe edition tracks + welcome. I have no issues with this and I usually have pretty cynical takes.

that's how label making money. if they put everything out at once, how they gonna making more money? 🤑 the band cant say "no", so it's up to you whether you want to buy it or not, the label still wins. business.

That's totally understandable. To be fair, I don't think the band themselves are lighting their cigars with 100 dollar bills while making these decisions. Labels gonna do what it feels it needs to do. It's just a total head scratcher that we didn't get a super deluxe vinyl only set with all of these, considering Vinyl sales have overtaken CD's recently. I'm not involved with the music business let alone from a manufacturing/sales/marketing position, but as a fan it just feels like another case of a major label being out of touch with what fans want.

To engage with this in a non-shitty way, I think that, beyond the cynical answer of excluding the Lost demos on vinyl so that they could do this release, there's also the practical aspect of what makes it onto vinyl in the box set and what doesn't. Warner established a precedent with HT20 that the demos disc would be CD and digital-exclusive, and I think it makes sense to follow that precedent with M20. Plus, including another record in the box would undoubtedly increase the price, and going above $200 would likely have a pretty decent impact on sales, likely more than the added revenue of the higher price. Alternatively, they could have cut the Nottingham show on vinyl, but then where does that go instead? On a CD? Cut from the box entirely?

I think the answer for the diehards would simply be "just add another record and raise the price," but I can see why Warner wouldn't have wanted to do that. Keeps the box at $200 and allows them to double-dip with RSD instead. I get the annoyance, though - it does feel a little bit like being nickel-and-dimed, but that's how Warner's gonna be, ultiamtely.

I touched on this a little above but it's just silly that they couldn't have compromised in some way and at least included a vinyl only set that contains the material that they heavily marketed for that particular release. I want to ask "who even cares about CD's anymore?" but since this is a hardcore fan/collector populated site, that probably won't go over too well for my argument. :P
Thinking on my position a bit more, I think I am more annoyed by the artificial scarcity factor of the release more than having to purchase ANOTHER separate release (taking your argument in good faith that they just couldn't make an additional record work for M20). I'm probably in the minority here but I would have gladly taken a set of just records for the full price of the super deluxe M20 as opposed to some records, cd's and prints/stickers that won't really get any use from me.
Anyway... Appreciate having a dialogue! You raised some great points. Discussions like this make me miss the old days of band fandom where we had to make an effort to get involved in discussions on fan sites. But now I am just being a blabbering old man reminiscing on the "good old days" haha!

My man here just found out that bands are not charity.

I don't mind purchasing material from bands I enjoy, I'm a big boy, I can afford it. My tolerance is just a tad bit lower for this kind of stuff when the band in question are millionaires. But shitposters gonna shitpost.

"I would have paid extra for a bundle with this and LPU demo records included"

Nowhere did I imply they should give their material out as charity. In fact I implied the opposite.

  12. Hard not to feel a bit annoyed by this. Why couldn't this have just been included in any of the M20 sets? This just feels like a way to double/triple dip into fans wallets. I would have paid extra for a bundle with this and LPU demo records included. Not to mention the artificial scarcity factor that makes it harder for actual fans to purchase when they have to compete with flippers. Not a good look in my opinion.

im mostly just taking the piss. A good song is a good song regardless of length.

Does anybody remember this track? Starts the same way. It wasn't done on Twitch, it came out of nowhere. Maybe an early demo from this project? The new song, based on the snippet played by Mike, definitely has punk rock influences (more like pop punk), which explains the imagery we've been seeing for the last few days. If this turns out to be an album, I think we might hear other songs in this style.

That was much more along the lines of what I was expecting based on the imagery he's been providing us. Something along the lines of that and like Death Grips or Ghostemane style beats. Trying not to judge the song before I hear the whole thing but so far, it's probably another in a long line of things that just haven't been to my taste. Good for him for doing what he wants though, it's not all gonna land for everyone.
