Show

In October 2010, Linkin Park had warmed up for their A Thousand Suns World Tour by performing at three shows in South America (two festivals and one headlining show). After these shows, they headed to Europe for a fifteen show arena tour across the continent. Closing out this tour were five shows in England. After the first two shows in Manchester and Newcastle, the band took a break to fly to Madrid, Spain for the MTV Europe Music Awards. They were nominated for the "Best Live Act" (presented by Slash), which they won.

The venue for the show was the famous Puerta de Alcalá monument in downtown Madrid and was the second of three iconic venues for Linkin Park on the A Thousand Suns World Tour, with the others being the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles (September 2010) and the Red Square in Moscow (June 2011).

Unfortunately, Linkin Park rarely performs in Spain. The 2010 show in Madrid was just their fourth trip to Spain, following three shows opening for the Deftones there in 2001 and headlining appearances in 2003 and 2008. Due to a lot of fans assuming that the band was performing just one song for the MTV EMA's, they did not come from across the country to attend the show, so many missed out on seeing the band. LP fans did not know until just before the show that Linkin Park would be performing a full show. However, LPU'ers did get a chance to RSVP to the show so some fanclub members (mostly under the assumption they were seeing Linkin Park perform Waiting For The End, their current single, only) did get to see the show.

An extensive rehearsal took place earlier in the day and the band remarked that they did not know that they would be performing their rehearsal in front of fans. Along with Waiting For The End being performed twice, the band ran through the first seven songs of their setlist as well as part of In The End.

Setlist

At this show, Linkin Park performed a variation of the headlining setlist that they had been playing in South America and Europe in October and November 2010. However, Given Up, No More Sorrow, Crawling and One Step Closer were dropped from the setlist.

See the show page here for the full setlist and show notes.

Release

Waiting For The End was aired on MTV for the EMAs.

On January 25, 2011, iTunes released the A Thousand Suns: Puerta de Alcalá (Live) EP, featuring New Divide, Waiting For The End, Breaking The Habit, The Catalyst, In The End and What I've Done from the show.

The show's video satellite feed was recorded by fans and shared widely before this release. Its total length was 74:55 mins and featured the full, unedited show (including Wisdom, Justice, And Love).

In June 2011, Linkin Park released a DVD and audio of the show on a release entitled A Thousand Suns+. It was an international only release. The DVD came in at 74:28 while the CD came in at 47:56. Wisdom, Justice, And Love was edited out of the recording. This is the only song missing from the official release. Additionally, different camera angles were used (versus the satellite feed) and the audio was mixed professionally. The DVD includes a folder with the audio of the show in 192kbps and also has a Robot Boy instrumental/remix piece in the credits.
