Summary

In the morning of July 20, 2017, what would be Chris Cornell's 53rd birthday, Linkin Park presented to the world the music video of their newest single "Talking To Myself" and they had plans to do a photoshoot later in the day. However, right after the video release, TMZ broke the news that Chester Bennington had been found dead in his Palos Verdes Estates home.

Fans hoped this was nothing but another hoax, but after many hours waiting from a word from the band's management, Mike Shinoda confirmed the devastating news on Twitter.

Fellow musicians soon started sharing memories and messages of support for Chester's family and friends and we've decided to make a compilation of those in this memorial page, both to show support for those he left behind and to show how big his impact in this world was.

Elton John, who met both Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington briefly, said:

It has been a sad few weeks. We lost Chris and then we lost Chester. I met them both briefly and they were two lovely guys.

You know artists are prone to being a little destructive, whether you are an actor or singer or visual artist. Sometimes, as Jim Carrey said when Philip Seymour Hoffman committed suicide, the noise just gets too much. It is so awful for someone to be so depressed that they commit suicide, especially when they have families.

I just wanted to pay tribute to them, as there by the grace of God go all of us. Just remember them fondly and the music they left. It is totally different music to the one I create but still wonderful music that has entertained millions, including me.

They were incredibly talented, nice men. To their families and their children, my love. Remember music is a joyous thing and these guys left us a whole legacy of music to enjoy. They have just gone too soon.

Rex Brown (ex-Pantera / ex-Down) said during a Goldmine Magazine podcast:

I wanna say I've met [Chester] a few times. We weren't close at all. You know, I'm still trying to get over Chris.

These guys just taking [themselves] out when they have it all, I just don't understand it. But then again, I understand mental illness very well. Not that I have it I don't. I think we all, in some sort of way, do, but I've never thought of fucking taking myself out. I'm just not like that. My life is beautiful. But then again, you get to a point I can see it, man. Everybody's been down. If you ain't been down, you can't sing the blues.

It's horrible. I feel bad for his family and all his bandmates and everything else.

Alice Cooper talked to 101 WRIF on July 26th about Chris Cornell and Chester. Listen at 10 minutes and 15 seconds in the video.

Yeah, I knew. I worked with Chris Cornell. I wrote a couple of songs with Chris, you know, for the Last Temptation album. And I just went... this guy, he's got the whole package. I've never seen anybody to have that package as much as he did. When it comes to just talent, guitar playing, singing, songwriting, Chris run the whole thing. So I was unbelievably shocked by that one. I didn't get that one. I didn't understand that one at all. You know, suicide on that level, I went... I just... why? I'm like everyone else going 'why?' And then Chester Bennington. Same thing. Chester's one of those guys I played golf with. I was teaching him golf. And, you know, we talk about music the whole time and he was in two bands at the same time, Linkin Park and I think STP he was in. And great kid, great family, you know? No financial problems and then all the sudden he's dead and you go 'Why? What is going on?' you know? I don't get it at all. I really don't get it. I'd never had any kind of depression, so I can't speak for that, you know. I don't think it was drugs, I don't think it was any of that. I think it was just a matter of maybe clinical depression.

Oh absolutely, I mean, you couldn't find two people with more potential than those two guys, you know. And then it was kind of the same thing with Weiland, Scott Weiland, you know? I mean, that guy had the whole package also, and yet, you know, decided that heroin was more important than that. Know what I mean? But I don't... these guys, I don't really think their thing was a drug problem. I think it was more of a physical problem. I think it had something to do with the clinical depression.

Incubus, another band whose members grew up members of Linkin Park, dedicated "Wish You Were Here" to Chester during their show at the BB&T Pavilion in Camden, NJ on July 20th.

Their guitarist, Mike Einziger, also spoke to Billboard about his death:

Chester's passing came to me as a total shock. We were all together just recently in collective mourning of Chris Cornell, and we all watched Chester sing a heartfelt 'Hallelujah' in respect to him....which makes this situation even all the more shocking.

Mental health is one of the most difficult things to assess in people, and even more tricky to bring up to someone in discussion in any serious manner. We need to try harder. I can only think of Chester's sorrow, and hope for the well-being of his children, family, band and friends. Sending my genuine love and support to all of them.

He later played "

" and "
" at Tomorrowland Belgium on July 21st as a tribute to Chester (starts at 8 minutes and 17 seconds in the video):

Kiiara played a studio version of "Battle Symphony" during her July 30th show at the Panorama Music Festival in Randall's Island Park, New York City, before performing "Heavy."

She is a long time Linkin Park fan who recorded vocals for "

" on One More Light.

Its been a pretty rough week. I dont know what to say and theres nothing really to say to make it better, but these next two songs are for Chester.

Jared Leto of Thirty Seconds To Mars wrote on Twitter:

His band went on tour with Linkin Park in 2014 as part of the Carnivores Tour.

That same night, during a show in Wantagh, NY, he gave an speech about Chester before dedicating to him the songs "Alibi" and "The Kill."

So, uh, you know, it's been a really tough few days. You know, we said goodbye to somebody in recent days that was an amazing artist, and incredible human being, somebody who I know probably touched everybody in this entire amphitheater, and he touched me personally as well. You know, Chester... Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for Chester. It's funny. I learned a lot watching him live his life. He taught me so much and when I close my eyes and think about him, I think about his face which was always smiling. I think about his heart which he wore on his sleeve. I think about how kind he treated me, my brother, Tomo, the band. I think about what he taught me about pursuing your dreams, pursuing your passion relentlessly, but as the same time being able to have an incredible family. You know, he had six incredible children as well. Every time we spoke, there wasn't a conversation we had that didn't include something about his family. And what you guys I think get a sense of from Linkin Park, and it certainly was an extension of how Chester lived his life, is Linkin Park; it's not just a band, it's a family. And the way they think about you guys, very similar to Thirty Seconds To Mars, it's a giant family and we try to make something more than just get onstage and play music. We try to connect and communicate in a way that's deep and meaningful, and I learned that from Chester. He did it night after night after night after night. And what about that voice, huh? What about that voice? That voice will live forever.

Aaron Lewis dedicated the Staind song "Something To Remind You" to Chester during a solo presentation at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom on July 20th.

Aaron toured with Linkin Park as part of Staind in the 2001 edition of the Family Values Tour. He joined the band on numerous occasions to perform "

" and also performed an acoustic version of "
" with them. On Reanimation, he lent his vocals to "
."

So, I lost a really good friend today. I'm not really sure why he chose to take his own life, but it's been a really sad day. This next song, that song is for Chester.

Aaron Lewis was joined by Staind bandmate Mike Mushok and Godsmack vocalist Sully Erna during a charity show at The Frank Newhall Look Memorial Park in Florence, MA on August 4th to perform a rendition of "Crawling" as a tribute to Chester.

Aaron played the song again during his August 10th performance at the State Fair of West Virginia in Lewisburg. Watch it

. He had to stop playing a few times because he broke down mid song.

Godsmack performed acoustic versions of "Crawling" and "Hunger Strike" as tributes to Chester and Chris Cornell during their August 09th set at Musikfest 2017 in Bethlehem, PA.

I just wanna bring up something real quick. I don't wanna hop on this too long 'cause I want you guys to leave here in a really good mood, with a good positive feeling, man, but, as you know, these last couple years has been pretty tragic with all the artists that we've lost. It's been actually mind blowing to me how many amazing performers, amazing voices, we've lost to some really sad tragic situations, and some of 'em were very close friends of ours. So, I thought I was gonna come out here tonight, we've just decided to do this today, we haven't really rehearsed this, but we wanted to do something for you guys. And we wanted to do something in honor of our friends, that have left us with some beautiful music on this planet. So I think this one's gonna come and speak for itself.

Korn dedicated "4U" to Chester during their July 20th set in Mansfield, MA.

The two bands had a long history together: Linkin Park took part on Korn's Family Values Tour in 2001 (although Korn wasn't really a part of the tour that year), Linkin Park played their first show in Mexico as an opening act for Korn, Chester recorded vocals for a Jonathan Davis song called "

," Jonathan Davis recorded vocals for "
" on Reanimation, Chester recorded vocals or an unreleased Korn cover of "Head Like A Hole," and Korn took part of Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution Tour in 2004 where Jonathan Davis performed "
" with the band. Chester was also a fan of Korn.

I wanna dedicate this song tonight to our homeboy Chester Bennington, y'all. Y'all make some noise for Chester, we love you bro.

Their guitar player, Head, took to social media to express his grief. Watch the video he posted after the show here and listen to his interview with WRIF here.

Guitarist Munky also spoke to Loaded Radio about Chester:

Shock. Everybody was walking around in this cloud. Just frustration and shock and sadness, and there was all this mixed emotions for still. Its still the residual effects of a roller coaster of emotions going around. Because weve known him for a long time all those guys, all the guys in [Linkin Park].

I cant imagine what his family and his band must be going through, and my heart sincerely goes out to him and his family. And their families the whole bands families. There are so many lives that are affected by this.

I think theres a statistic on Health.com where it shows musicians are number five in line for the most serious depression and they turn to drugs and alcohol to kind of make that go away, but it only worsens. Drugs and alcohol always win; the person always fails.

It has been sad to lose Chris Cornell and Chester all within such a short period. It should have never happened, but it did Its been really hard. Its been hard for the guys in [Korn] to hear [about Chesters death] and process it. And I cant imagine I cant imagine what its [like] for him and his family and his band. So, yeah, my deepest, sincere condolences to him and his family and his band.

Papa Roach played the chorus of "In The End" at the end of "Forever" as a tribute to Chester during their shows in Hamburg and Berlin on September 15th and 16th respectively.

Papa Roach was one of the first bands Linkin Park toured with, back in 2000. They were also together at Ozzfest 2001.

We all lost somebody today. I lost a friend. And this is one of his favorite songs. I wanna dedicate it to him. Chester, we will fucking miss you.

coreytaylor1.jpg

coreytaylor2.jpg

Talking to Loudwire, Corey said:

Calling them cowards is a very immature way of looking at it. Its the easy way to look at something like that because it makes you not have to face what a serious issue it is. Its easy for someone to label it like that so they can turn their back on it and pretend that it was something that didnt happen to them, when inside theyre hurting. People who fight depression are almost in a constant state of hurting.

It is a goddamn tragedy. That does not make them cowards. Ive even heard people recently say something to the fact of, It was bound to happen. This was always going to happen. Ive gotten so angry hearing that that Ive gone on record saying, You are absolutely wrong for saying that. Suicide should not be a foregone conclusion.

Youre not alone. Not one person out there who feels that way is alone. It is important for people to know that.

Alien Ant Farm dedicated "Attitude" to Chester during their July 30th set at The Paramount in Huntington, NY and played the intro of "In The End" at the end of the song. They continued doing that for the next few shows.

Metallica is one of the bands Linkin Park looks up to and they took Linkin Park out on tour in 2003 as part of their Summer Sanitarium Tour.

We forgive you Chester.

Before the show, their drummer Lars Ulrich, who can be seen during Linkin Park's

DVD, talked to 95.5 KLOS about Chester:

Chester was a very kind and very honest human, very gentle soul, who had a really big heart and the first time I heard Linkin Park I just... singing those songs, you know. The first album, what was it? '99 or 2000. That power that came out of him was just unbelievable. It was so original and so unique and you really... he was one of those singers that has a rare gift where every words that comes out of him sounds authentic. It's not just... he's not just wrting something down that he sings, it's like everything that comes out of him sounds like he feels, he means, every word, every nuance, every syllable. And we did a tour with them in 2003 when they were kind enough to come and play with us across America on our Summer Sanitarium Tour and we had a lot of fun. And all those guys are great guys and my heart goes out to all of them.

During their set at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, VA, the band also performed "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen in tribute to Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell. This was the same song

at Chris' funeral.

To be honest, I was one of those kids who was late to the game on Nirvana. It's weird, where I grow up hip-hop was kind of IT and as big as Nirvana was. It was Soundgarden that pulled me in to that Seattle scene, to rock. And Cornell was a rock god, and if you met the guy, he was the gentlest, kindest, the most soft spoken, and also if you're a lead singer of a band, you just don't wanna be in a room with him because all lights just go to him. That's just it. And he was the most wonderful human being. Anyway, he passed, which I still believed to be, fundamentally believed to be some kind of insane accident because even on that day he was incredibally happy. We have the same manager, so he spoke to him that day, his wife, and I'm not gonna tell you the details, but, you know, prescriptional drugs can be dangerous, I'll leave you with that.

So, depression is a real thing. And a lot of our audience lost people to depression and suicide. My wife has lost 5 friends from highschool to suicide. It's a real thing. Mental illness is the issue. It's like trying to throw a dart at a ghost. So it's incredibly difficulty to take down. And you wanna blame other things and outside forces, but mental illness plays the predominal role. We obviously, and most of this crowd knows that we lost Chester Bennington of Linkin Park.

We've had the pleasure of meeting those guys at home with Mike Shinoda along with Chester but when we first had our record, the first dinner we had with our label, Linkin Park walks it, 2007, 2006, and sat down next to us at this Thai restaurant in L.A. and I was like, my hands are sweating, Chester Bennington was sitting next to me. And I didn't know how to reach him, and he says: "Hey man, nice to meet you". Just like the nicest, he never met me, I was nobody, and here's Linkin Park sitting next to us, and I'll never forget that until the day I die.

And I got to comunicate with a few of those guys over the years, and known him to be incredible gracious and amazing, and needless to say, we lost him in the last 24 hours.

I've never really done a dedication song, and I didn't feel comfortable doing a Linkin Park song tonight. But at Chris Cornell's funeral, Chester performed. He sang Hallelujah. The last thing I'm gonna do is do a song and dedicate it to Chester and Chris and do a song I don't know, I do know this one. So Imma do, I'm just gonna do a little bit of it and you feel free to sing along, and hopefully I can make it through this.

This goes out to Chester and Linkin Park and Chris and all the fans of two of the best bands of the last two decades.

The entire show was dedicated to them:

onerepublic4.jpg

The band performed the song again for Good Morning America on August 4th at Rumsey Playfield in New York, this time with guest vocals by Chris Cornell's daughter, Toni Cornell.

Linkin Park was supposed to play a concert for Good Morning America that same day but canceled due to Chester's death. Read OneRepublic's interview with Billboard here.

Ryan Tedder: Chester sang this at Chris's funeral and this is arguably one of the greatest songs writen in the last 50 years, I think by most people's accords. It's a very special song to us, and I think to most people, and specially to Toni as well.

Toni Cornell: It's an honor to perform this for my dad and Chester and to sing for them.

Billy Talent, who have played some festival shows with Linkin Park, dedicated their song "Nothing To Lose" to Chester during their July 22nd set in Freiburg, Germany.

When a guy like chester, you know, it doesn't make any sense, it's not logical and it's terrible, terrible sad, and terrible tragic and we just wanna send all of our love from our band and all love you wonderful people send all of the linkin park family all of our love and thougths, ok?

And I just need you, I just need all of you to know, I need all of you to know that suicide is never a fucking option. We love you too much. And we got to take care of each other, we got to listen to each other, and we have to help each other, ok?

This one's for Chester!

Upon learning of Chester's death, Imagine Dragons singer Dan Reynolds shared an anti-cyberbullying message on Twitter and Facebook, saying:

Whether you disagree with someones politics, their religion, their artistic choices, their character, how they look when you type out those words you are bullying. Youre doing more damage than you have any idea We are all responsible for this Can we please stop? Thats my plea.

We are losing so many people to suicide. My question is, when is enough, enough? Can we speak to each other with love? Can we speak to each other with kindness? We can still have opinions, we have thoughts, we can express those thoughts, but can we do it with love? I believe we can. I hope we do.

We wouldn't be here ir it wasn't for incredible artists like Chester.

We send our love, we send our hearts and the most peace we possible can to his wife and six kids across the world. May we continue to please spread a message, and that message is... Where was it, I saw it here... "Stay Alive". Hold that up.

I wanna to say something. When I was 18 this record came out. It's called Hybrid Theory. You know, we already been a band for a few years, you know? We started when we were 16 years old, just doing our thing. Our guitar player was a little hassle and decide, and, you know, we just drink beers and play and have a good time. We were into Korn, Limp Bizkit, Chi from Deftones, they all have good stuff and then, Hybrid Theory came out. It's a good record. I just wanna say rest in peace to Chester Bennington.

And I'm definitely influencied by that man. I just know that everything he's done put together will live on forever and we can always have that.
