Well here's a thread I thought that needed to be made in case we were ever confronted by either LP management, Warner Bros or something similar. This thread is compiled with proof that the band allows sharing of their live recordings. I actually made a page for this earlier this year and put it on the server somewhere, but since I can't find it currently, I thought a thread would work. Metallica communities and other sites do this so I might as well to cover our asses in case anything happens.

-

PROOF LINKIN PARK ALLOWS SHARING OF LIVE RECORDINGS
This would be ALL live recordings, which means from the very beginning of the band until present day. This does NOT just apply to just the live CDs sold in 2007 and 2008 at merch booths and the Digital Souvenir Packages (DSPs) sold in 2008 online at http://downloads.linkinpark.com/. This includes everything.

SOURCE 1:
QUOTE (Mike Shinoda on the Linkin Park Message Boards from the Minutes To Midnight Touring Cycle)
i'm going to start a thread (here) for questions and tips on the live show mp3s. if you have a great one from one of our shows that you want people to hear, you can tell them about it here. if you are looking for one, here's a great place to ask!

Link: http://forums.linkinpark.com/showpost.php?...amp;postcount=1
(The post has now been removed by Sparkart / whoever else has the right to remove Mike's posts from the LPMB. However, I actually saw this coming, so I saved the quote in both image form and in text form.)

SOURCE 2:
Source 2 has a short story behind it. After the Auburn, Washington (July 25, 2007; aka the first live recording made available) recording was posted online, users started posting links to download it on the LPUnderground Message Boards. Quickly, forum moderators tried to say that posting media like that was illegal, but due to a high number of requests (specifically from "Astat", a few other users such as "jonhux", and I), the moderators agreed to get with the LPUnderground forum admins, who would then in turn ask the band if they would allow the sharing of the shows. We received word quickly (within 24 hours) that the band had relayed the message to the admins that "It is fine because they generally sell out at the shows anyway". That message of course, relayed to the users, and to this day, the sharing of shows is allowed on the LPU, the LPMB and all Linkin Park-related sites throughout the internet.

However, it is important and crucial to note that TWO more times (once in late 2007 [November?] and once in early 2008 [January?]), SOMEONE tried to remove the threads where we had links to share the shows located. Admins and mods from the LPU informed me that they had been told by someone "higher up" to remove them ASAP. This prompted an uproar (actually just from 2-3 users, including me), and I again posted proof the band allowed the recordings and threatened that I'd go directly to LP management and/or Mike himself if the threads with the download links were removed one more time. Needless to say, to this day, they have remained.

In summary, Source 3 for this can be the LPU admins. These people have gone directly to the band (or so they say) and asked them about it...getting us, the fans, a direct quote, so this is good enough for a source in my opinion.

There was actually a discussion thread with ALL of this in it, but in the late-2007 deleting spree, someone removed and deleted the entire thread, so unfortunately it is lost to my knowledge. However, this is still credible for a source. The 2008 Downloads Thread and the sections Projekt Revolution and All Other LP Tours are also both full of download links.

If the label needs a quote, then:
QUOTE (A Linkin Park Band Member from July 2007)
It is fine because they generally sell out at the shows anyway.

SOURCE 3: (Updated December 12, 2009)
On August 3rd, 2008, Mike and Phoenix gave an interview to Project 96.1 radio in Atlanta, GA during Projekt Revolution.

QUOTE (Mike from the interview)
The Digital Souvenir Pack is something that when you buy tickets to the show, you can opt in for that, online, and after tonight's show, you'll go back home and within a few days you'll get an email with mp3s from our whole set, so you'll have the recordings. What you always hear online is mixes from the board or you'll hear people's cellphone recordings. Neither one of those is really meant to be played on your iPod or in your car or home stereo. Actually, our mixer records everything to a hard drive and actually after the show he goes and mixes it for your iPod or your car or your stereo. He makes a good live mix because that mix is different than what he would do for a live setting. You get those, and we've actually been making them available for a while now. If there's any shows in particular that you are interested in, that were recorded since we started doing this, which was maybe as much as a year ago then just check around online. Somebody...you know, just go to the message board, LinkinPark.com and just ask around about recordings of it because a lot of these shows have been recorded.

Audio of this can be downloaded here. Mike's part starts around 7 minutes and 50 seconds.

February 25, 2008 - Mike Interview w/ Entertainment Weekly

QUOTE (Interview)
After conquering the worlds of nü-metal and modern rock, could the next step in Linkin Park's evolution be...jam band? ''We change the set pretty drastically each night and come up with stuff on the spot,'' says co-vocalist/guitarist Mike Shinoda. ''Every night, 'Bleed It Out' is completely different.'' Now Linkin fans can follow in a hi-fi (and legal) version of the bootlegging tradition pioneered by Deadheads. For an extra $14.99, ticket holders can purchase a ''digital souvenir package'' — a link to download MP3s and photos of that one-of-a-kind performance — roughly seven days after they've attended a show on the band's current North American tour.

It's the latest, online incarnation of the ''instant bootleg'' phenomenon. Previously, artists like Pearl Jam sold physical CDs of live gigs weeks — or even months — after playing dates. ''Many bands have gone in this direction,'' says Shinoda, adding, ''but what I'm really happy about is that the quality of the [MP3] mixes is nearly what we would put out on a live record. These would actually sound great on your stereo.''

The MP3s won't be copy- protected, making it relatively easy for freeloaders to find them on the Web. But like the Grateful Dead before them, Linkin Park don't mind if fans share their live recordings. ''I would rather they trade these high-quality mixes of a song on really special nights than swap links to crappy YouTube clips off somebody's cell phone,'' Shinoda says, chuckling. ''Which always sounds like shit!''

February 23, 2008 - Mike & Chester Interview

QUOTE
Chester Bennington: The digital souvenir package is a brand new product, brand new thing that we’re offering on this tour. I don’t think anybody else has offered it or at least offered this type of thing in this way. You can basically opt in when you buy your tickets online for the digital souvenir package. What will happen after that is you go to the show, you watch your show, enjoy that, come home, and in your e-mail inbox you’ll have a link to the show, to the MP3s of our set from the show you went to. In other words, you get to take home the hopefully memorable concert that you went to.

And the best part about it to me is that our live mixer, our official mixer who mixes our show every night at the front of the house position, he finishes his night with us, then goes back to his hotel or bus or backstage and mixes the show for you. That’s what’s so important about this idea is that it’s not a straight board mix or a cell phone or video camera, which is what you usually get on YouTube. This is a mix done for CD, so it sounds good in your car, so it sounds good coming out of your iTunes and your stereo, into your stereo. It’s intended to be played in your headphones and in your car, and it’s done by our official guy.

Mike Shinoda: Yes, and we also – that’s another thing that I think is really cool about it is we also encourage our fans, for those who get this thing, is we encourage them. Our sets change. We play songs maybe one night that we don’t play the next, and so if you want to get those songs, we encourage our fans to go on and trade them and kind of get to know each other. We really like the fact that, in the digital world, people who like the same things and want to be part of something can communicate and share and exchange things with each other. This is one of those things that we would really like our fans to kind of do that with.

Bennington: Plus, different shows, some shows are really special. Just the way that a certain song came off one night just really touches people sometimes. Those are the kind of MP3s that get passed around a lot.

Updated today with a few more sources. If anyone has any other sources of this, like a magazine interview, radio interview or internet interview then please let me know. I think it is very important we get as many sources as possible due to the fact the band is planning to sell more DSP's online via http://downloads.linkinpark.com/ sometime in early 2010. They have come after us for sharing them before with no warning (3 times total between mid 2007 and early 2008), so I think documenting as much proof as possible will help us in every way possible when it comes time for those DSP's to go online.

Thanks!

I agree. Band members make the fucking music, play the show, etc, it's theirs... I go by them before I go by anyone else. I think we're gonna have problems once the new DSP site launches though. The argument that is now in OUR favor is saying that fans should be allowed to share them so we can all hear the cool moments at some shows (example: BTH piano version in Toronto, etc), but with the new DSP site anyone can buy any performance.

Not sure what our argument can be other than the band said we can share them, lol. Hopefully noone with LP HQ or someone else says anything...we're just fans that like to listen to the shows, we buy every goddamn thing the band releases anyway..... (example: I've got 5 copies of Hybrid Theory, etc)....

That'd be a total dick move if they launch the site and come after us for sharing the shows...

I bet they will too is the sad thing. I guess that my only choice then is to make a section in the forum that you have to request to be a part of and then post the links there. The reason I say they'll come after us is because Metallica (even Lars, etc) said the EXACT same thing for their live downloads, that fans can share them and that site JITF that shared all the live shows (and even had like 5 quotes from Metallica band members) was taken down by the Metallica label. Fuuuuuck, lol.
