Why is it "not a smart move" if it's something so commonplace that virtually every band that's ever been big enough to be on a televised performance in the first place has done it at some point? It's no worse than fixing mistakes in the DSPs, really.

Because they're standing there jamming on their instruments like something's actually happening. They're basically acting. On the DSPs, yes they did edit them and correct them to make them sound better but at least they had the decency to actually perform instead of act like they're filming a music video.

Absolutely agree. It's acting. It's fake. It's not really happening.

Its not that its not a smart move and i can understand why they do it. I have friends who say they would rather listen to the polished album version then have a band mess around with their song on stage. and the live sound is raw and rough and many people dont like it. and mass media wants everything nice and clean. it just takes away from the actual "performance aspect that we love" which sux.

You say that like it was their decision. It most clearly was not, and almost never is in these kind of situations. They probably had a choice of playing to a backing track, or not playing at all.

The latter would have been the more respectful thing to do IMO.

It wasn't DBS's decision. Every band which ever played at this show (one show every year) had playback!

Not necessarily. If they hadn't been informed of what they'd have to do before hand, then maybe they just didn't want to disappoint the fans that had paid to see them perform by backing out, as it was only one song anyway. If that's the case then great move by DBS.

I dislike the fact that they used a backing track but it was just for this event so it doesn't really matter.

I wouldn't blame them for performing that song there half-playbacked.
I mean, there were 45000 people in the arena, more than 5million watched the show. It would habe been very stupid not to play this show after getting to know that there will be a playback. How would it have looked like if they hadn't been on stage after all? That's promotion and that's how the music business works. I don't like bands doing that, but at least the vocals were not playbacked.
Furthermore, there were people only because of dbs (including me) and we would have been very disappointed (well, I was due to the playback, but okay...) I also guess not all of them realized what happened yesterday as the guys were better in acting than "Pur", it just looked more than funny.

Oh, and one last thing: You won't cancel a show hosted by Stefan Raab in Germany...He's just too famous. I already gave the numbers. I believe it's an honor for music acts to be chosen to perform there. CBI even was the title song they always played in ads for the show. You cannot do better promotion...

edit: I forgot: It would have been really expensive for dbs to come there and say: nope, we won't play...

Check out the video, it seems the organizers had the band pull a "Top Of The Pops" and had Chester & Ryan sing over a backing instrumental of 'Crawl Back In'.

Chester and Ryan sang LIVE.
