Unlisted Linkin Park Shows / Notes

While I certainly won't spend as much time here as I'm spending in my "Unlisted Grey Daze Shows / Notes" thread, I think, this thread should exist. I would love someone to take over and find some previously unknown info on Xero/Hybrid Theory/Linkin Park shows. I'll just start with:

Currently not in the guide:

  • The band's 42 label showcases

    https://web.archive.org/web/20031203144441/http://www.lptimes.com/bio/bio_band.html

Executives at other record companies must be in tears. For three years, Linkin Park were rejected by every major label in the business and by a lot of indies, as well. Warner Bros. passed three times before finally signing the band in late '99. Blue, who gave the group a development deal in 1997 after seeing just one show, recalls a Xero club date in Los Angeles packed with A&R scouts. They had all fled by the third song. "The place was empty," says Blue, now a vice president of A&R at Warner Bros. and the executive producer of Hybrid Theory. "You could hear crickets." When Bennington arrived in 1999, the band played forty-two showcases for labels and, the singer says, "got turned down by everybody."

  • Hybrid Theory performing with Cypress Hill?

    http://websta.me/p/853071913793706294_49710597

I saw Hybrid Theory with Cypress Hill live when I was in 7th grade #old

It is possible that she's talking about PR2002 somehow, but who knows? I saw some people making this kind of mistakes before.

  • Unknown Linkin Park's 2001.02.12 Rockline appearance / source

    http://web.archive.org/web/20010518120908/www.efanguide.com/~linkinpark/news.html

Linkin Park will be performing live at ROCKLINE at 8PM PST (11PM EST) today (February 12).

It means 12.02.2001 and it's not in the guide. However, the Rockline website says "2/12/2001 Linkin Park, Static-X, and Orgy" and I think it's unlikely that all of them were in the same studio, so I assume the radio played a few segments from some show all these bands played on the same bill. Are there any shows that fall into this category?

Added shows:

  • 1999.11.12 Fullerton, CA, The Backalley (Opening for Alien Ant Farm)
  • 2000.02.24 Los Angeles, CA, HiFi Hollywood ("Lockout" Rehearsal)
  • 1999.xx.xx Glendale, CA, 311 E. Stocker Ave
  • 1999.xx.xx Los Angeles, CA, The Gig-Hollywood,"Mike Galaxy Presents" Indy Hits Showcase

I highly doubt that they played a show that day, if they did it would mean that they played 8 shows in a row with no day off. Rockline is also based in LA.

Do bands even perform at Rockline? I thought this was some sort of radio talk show.

LP and Orgy played a show together in Providence in 2000 for example, and at least 2 others. I don't think all 3 bands played together.

I believe some bands played short sets @ Rockline. As I said, I doubt the band played that day too, but if they did play, then this show is not on the guide. If the show played any portion of any other Linkin Park concert, then it means we are missing a source.

It's just weird that we know absolutely nothing about it, if it was just webcasted I'm pretty sure we'd have a recording of it. And even if we didn't have it, we'd know that a recording exists. I think several Rockline CD's popped up on ebay over the years, and all they ever had were interviews, unless I mix it up with something else.

Here's STP performing on Rockline in 2000, for example:

I think you can remove the Rockline one:

http://web.archive.org/web/20010205014800/http://www.arrowfm.com/rockline/rockline.shtml

Listen to Rockline on the Net. Visit this page each Wednesday at 8:30pm (PST)

Let's take February's Wednesday's for example: 7, 14, 21 and 28. Three of them had recap here:

Lynyrnd Skynyrd - February 28, 2001

...

Jeff Beck & Steve Lukather of Toto - February 14, 2001

...

The Doors - February 7, 2001

...

Now let's check the remain date on the Rockline Radio archive:

2/21/2001 Foreigner *

ROCKLINE TIMELINE!

Thirty-Three years and counting! Take a journey from day one to the present and see the amazing guests we've had on ROCKLINE!

Click on a year to see our guests! * - indicates rebroadcast

My guess is that Wednesday was the day when the guests actually came to the studio where the show was broadcast from. According to Wikipedia it's "Sunset Sound" in LA which make it almost impossible for the band since they played Chicago on the 11th and Pontiac on the 13. Maybe it was just a phone interview or broadcast of pre-recorded show like you suggested.

Did anyone else notice some thing called "DIC PROMOTIONS" on both Hybrid Theory's Big Fish Pub and Mill Ave flyers?

There's nothing online about it, I guess. Would be interesting to try and move this way.

Great find! Weird wording though. Could be anything judging by that post, but if they did perform live as Wiki suggesting, they definitely performed "One Step Closer".
The other interesting thing I noticed on that archived page is:

Happy Holidays
12-21-00 7:55 PM EST
We would like to apologize for many of the files on the site not working properly. We will be switching servers over the holidays so expect news fan art, mp3's, screensavers, and bass tabs.
Untill then there are a few cool things you might want to check out:
-Live preformance of "One Step Closer" [click here]
-Interview with Brad at www.ugo.com [click here]
Happy holidays everyone.

Live performance of "One Step Closer" leads to mtv.com which means it was official proshot footage of the song. As far as we know (or knew, if the Farmclub thing is correct), the band first started TV performances in 2001 and this post is from 2000.

So I guess, it was that Roxy video and it was official enough and we don't have it.

I think I discussed it before, but what's up with official video being uncirculated?

Boy Hits Car playing with Hybrid Theory?

http://rockrevoltmagazine.com/indie-band-of-the-week-boy-hits-car/

You teamed up with some big names in the music industry. Which collaboration of this all left you with the best memories?

Supporting Stone Temple Pilots in Europe, playing festivals that were headlined by names like Iggy & the Stooges, Eminem, or The Prodigy, gigging at LA clubs in the mid 90’s with bands like Incubus, System of a Down, and Linkin Park before they really broke, then supporting em all years later, generally sharing stages with so many great artists and bands in general…

Don't we have some 2000 shows were LP played with Boy Hits Car at least once?

Could be also from KROQ AAC.

Xero/HT opening for Cypress Hill is a common myth. The Xero Lynus Brook show was supposed to be the one they opened for them but it was never confirmed that Cypress Hill ever played a show there around that time or that this venue even exists. This was also brought up in the recent LPA podcast and Mike denied it too.

We have two shows in 2001 - Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park (not counting the cancelled Reading USA festival).

It also looks like the band was set to open for LP in Hollywood Palladium, but it doesn't look like it happened:

Edited the first post. Since the last time I updated it, I:

1) Found out the exact date for "Lockout" performance:

http://lplive.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=12232

2) Found a new show @ The Backalley with Alien Ant Farm, Hoobustank, Boy Hits Car and Kundalini.

http://lplive.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=12361

Boy Hits Car question from the last few posts is now solved.

3) Just found out the exact name of the rehearsal studio both the "Lockout" and the "Frat Party" performances were filmed at - HiFi Hollywood. Source: http://web.archive.org/web/20151216203827/http://www.hifihollywood.com/

Did anyone ever try to figure out what's on the posters in the "Esaul" video from Frat Party?

The Staind one, for example, is their Family Values '99 tour poster, so there's no way the vid is earlier than late-1999.

Also, that's a different room than the one we saw in "Lockout".

I always assumed the Esaul video was done at Mike's old place on Stocker Street in Glendale (same address in the original HTEP booklet), source of the "Ten PM Stocker" alternate band name idea and the story of Mike's neighbors getting mad about the noise while Chester was doing the OSC vocals.

Wikipedia mentions: "The music that would ultimately become the Hybrid Theory album was first produced by Linkin Park in 1999 as a nine-track demo tape. The band sent this tape to various recording companies and played forty-two different showcases for recording industry representatives, including performances for Los Angeles promoter and impresario, Mike Galaxy's showcase at The Gig on melrose".

Another article written by Mike Galaxy himself mentions the band called Doctor Lady (formerly Halogen) opening for Hybrid Theory in The Troubadour:

"11:30pm-Doctor Lady-Los Angeles - Formerly Halogen, Dr. Lady was one of Music Connection's best 100 unsigned bands of 2000. The band has had several gigs recently including opening for Slash at the House of Blues and for Hybrid Theory at the Troub. Jason Pebworth (vocals) was in the Broadway revival of Jesus Christ Superstar and in the touring company for Phantom of the Opera, Johnny Fedevich (drums) has played around LA and was cast as Stillwater's drummer in "Almost Famous" and Johnny Lonely (bass) did turns with Agnes Gooch and Liquid Jesus before joining the band. Guitarists, Chad Rachild and George Astasio, round out the group. Dr. Lady's sound is rock with a melody and a heavy emphasis on song writing and musicianship. Doctor Lady consists of members from all over the country transplanted currently in Los Angeles. Several labels are currently showing interest. Recently had this single Superstalker played on KROQ's Jed the Fish, Catch of the Day".

The band changed it's name around 2001, so they definitely were still called Halogen at that time.

Then I contacted Mike Galaxy for him to confirm these shows, ask him if it's still possible to figure our the exact dates and also ask about his possible involvement with the band through Band Promote (there were hints of Band Promote being involved with the band online):

He said: "I own both Band Promote and Indy Hits and the band did perform for my industry showcase night but that is the extent of my involvement. They were signed after labels saw them at my showcase. I do not manage them and never have. Unfortunately I do not remember the date of their performance. I think it was the first show ever with singer Chester Bennington. Yes at the Gig on Melrose which is closed several years ago.
The Troubadour show was much later. Wish I could help more".

He then also said: "Yeah, sorry I can't help out more. The one thing I do remember is when Brad was working with Jeff, Jeff brought him into the office while I was visiting and told me about his new band at that moment then we played his demo. I believe that was in 99 so I assume their show with me was in 99. I think they changed their name to Linkin Park in 2000".

So, the Band Promote thing denied (and removed from our Linkinpedia), two Hybrid Theory shows confirmed:

1999.xx.xx Los Angeles, CA, The Gig-Hollywood, "Mike Galaxy Presents" Indy Hits Showcase
2000.xx.xx West Hollywood, CA, Troubadour

We can take out 1999 and 2000, since that is an assumption (a pretty safe one though).

I also contacted Johnny Fedevich from Halogen/Dr. Lady and, according to him, Halogen and Hybrid Theory shared the same rehearsal space on Hollywood & Vine (HiFi Hollywood rehearsal studio we saw in Lockout).

Since local concert calendars are notorious for screwing up names of non-famous local bands, I decided I should look up if there are any bands listed as "Zero" in Los Angeles Times' calendars from 1997 to 1998 for potential Xero (pronounced "Zero") concert dates.

Here's what I have so far:

1998.01.15 San Juan Capistrano, CA, Coach House (Zero, Sounds Of Creation)

1998.01.16 West Hollywood, CA, House Of Blues (Little Feat, Zero)
1998.01.18 Ventura, CA, Ventura Theatre (Zero, Miracle Ticket)
1998.05.02 Fullerton, CA, Club 369 (Livid, County, Zero, Twisted)
1998.05.05 Ventura, CA, Ventura Theatre (Zero)
1998.05.06 San Juan Capistrano, CA, Coach House (Zero)
1998.05.08 West Hollywood, CA, House Of Blues (Mother Hips, Zero, Tom Hall)

Zero is a rather generic band name, but I think that Club 369 show is probably the likeliest candidate to really be a Xero show. Just a guess, of course, as we should look into all of them to be sure.

A bootlegs guide for the band Zero can be found here with most of the dates and setlists, nothing to do with Xero.
