1991 - No Clue/Physical Evidence:
Band Members: Rob Bourdon, ???, ???, ???.
Studio recordings: None as far as we know.
Shows: None as far as we know.
Live recordings: None as far as we know.

In 6th grade I started playing in a band with 3 friends called No Clue. We would play cover songs like Wild Thing and in 7th grade we switched our name to Physical Evidence and covered Nirvana, Bad Religion and Suicidal Tendencies. When we started writing our own original music, the songs sounded like a blend of those 3 different artists. Most of our song lyrics were about the teachers we hated in our junior high school.

1995 - Calabasas High School Jazz Band:
Band Members: Rob Bourdon, ???
Studio recordings: None as far as we know.
Shows: One show with Rob.
Live recordings: None as far as we know.

When I was in the 10th grade I began playing in my high schools jazz band. I played one gig and didnt like it at all, but in the audience two musicians who were contemplating forming a new band saw me performing and recruited me to audition for their new band called Karma. Through the bass player of Karma I met Brad Delson and Mike Shinoda who both lived nearby me in the San Fernando Valley.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1995 - Relative Degree:
Band members: Mark Wakefield (Vocals), Brad Delson (Guitar), Rob Bourdon (Drums), ??? (From a band called "Karma") (Bass).
Studio recordings: None as far as we know.
Shows: Only one, at The Roxy 17.05.1996.
Live recordings: None as far as we know.

Brad and I, along with the bass player from Karma and some other high school friends started our own band called Relative Degree. Mike was making beats for a lot of local MCs at this time, but would come by and watch us practice sometimes. He never joined the band but would occasionally put his samples into our songs. Relative Degree sounded a lot like the band 311- it was rock with a funky incorporation of hip hop and rap elements. Our dream for the band was to play a gig at The Roxy, a popular club for up and coming bands, located on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, CA. When the goal was reached, the band just stopped practicing and lost focus, eventually leading to a break up and a separation of ways.

Relative Degree played 1 show and then finished, their goal was to sell out the Roxy so when they accomplished that goal they stopped.

It all began when Bourdon and Delson were in high school and played together in a band called Relative Degree. "We set a goal to play one show at the Roxy [in West Hollywood]," Bourdon said. "That was our big goal, so we wrote 12 songs, rehearsed for a year, played that show at the Roxy and then broke up. That was the end of Relative Degree." Shinoda, a classmate of Delson's and Bourdon's, crashed a few Relative Degree practices and fostered a strong friendship with Delson. He created a few samples for them but was more interested in making beats for local MCs. "We always just figured we were in two different worlds," said Delson, whose head looks naked when not wrapped in his signature headphones.

1995? - Mike (Before forming Xero):
Studio recordings: One song, probably a few instrumentals.
Shows: None as far as we know.
Live recordings: None as far as we know.

I think the first song I ever recorded with Mike was a song called "Whatever The Fuck". We recorded it in his bedroom on a little 4 track recorder. Mike did the beat, and the concept was to say pretty much the 1st thing that popped into our heads when we wrote it. We did that like in 1996, back in our development stage of rapping.

199? - Sac:
Band Members: Chester Bennington, Sean Dowdell.
Studio recordings: One unreleased demo.
Shows: None.
Live recordings: None.

Chester and I had an electronic experiement that was a heavy industrial sounding project called Sac, we only did 1 demo and I have not idea where it even it, that was poretty cool. ...it was really only something we did for a few months an wrote about 4 or 5 songs. We never played any shows or anything but the concept was cool.

1998? - Kongo Shock:

Contrary to common belief, Chester didn't immediately join Linkin Park after Grey Daze broke up. As a matter of fact, he first auditioned for a ska band called Kongo Shock.

So Kongo Shock's lead singer was being deported back to Canada. We tried out quite a few people to fill his shoes. Grey Daze had just broken up, and their practice studio was located in the same complex. I also went to High School with their drummer. We had always been friends with them, but were miles apart in styles. Chester (with his 2 foot, stringy, blond dread locks) tried out and was the one that we eventually chose, but he was also very persuasive. He threw a BBQ at his house after the second tryout as a way to really shake us up.

A few weeks later some personal problems with a couple of remaining members of Kongo Shock led us to call it all off. We never really told him that he was our pick. We just said "sorry, we broke up".

There is a Rolling Stone interview with him that sort of goes into his state of mind when this happened, but they don't mention Kongo Shock, they just say that he didn't get the gig with us and after that he really wanted to quit music all together. I think his girlfriend at the time got him to keep going on and to eventually do an audition in LA for what became Linkin Park.

Let's talk about the past, Grey Daze. I'm a big fan, i have the Original CDs and as i'm a lot of people love the band and want to know a lot of stuff...

Apart from Sean Dowdell And His Friends and Grey Daze, which other bands you were a part of?

Chester and I had an electronic experiement that was a heavy industrial sounding project called Sac, we only did 1 demo and I have not idea where it even it, that was poretty cool. Other than that I was in a band alled Waterface after Grey Daze broke up and we were signed to EMI and put out 1 record called seven days.

Is amazing! I would like to know more about SAC. Any Artwork to share or at least the name of the Demo?

No it was really only something we did for a few months an wrote about 4 or 5 songs. We never played any shows or anything but the concept was cool.

MTV Ride, 2:48.

Funny how I missed that. lol

Tasty Snax/The Snax:

Band Members: Mark Fiore (Vocals), Dave Farrell (Bass), Eric Pffeifer (Guitar), Mark Keller (Drums). (Anyone else?)

Jim from The Rosewood Fall.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think this was taken from a research I did some years ago:

http://wiki.lpassociation.com/index.php/Tasty_Snax#Members

Someone might have copied that to the LPA wiki.

By the way, "Jim Roach" and "James Roach" are the same person. lol

Grey Daze:

Band Members: Chester Bennington (Vocals), Steve Mitchell (Guitar), Jonathan Krause (Bass), Jason Barnes (Guitar), Bobby Benish (Guitar), Mace Beyers (Bass), Sean Dowdell (Drums). (All correct? anyone else?)

When Jodi and Dave joined the band they were still called Grey Daze:

I think they only changed their name after Bobby left (?).

How is that even possible? It's like saying that Sean Dowdell and His Friends and Grey Daze formed in the same year.

Added/fixed the rest.

It's possible.

SDAHF? broke up > Sean started Grey Daze and Chester joined the band in the same year.

Same thing happened with Relative Degree and Xero.

While Phoenix was w/ The Snax he transitioned from guitar to bass guitar and stayed w/ it ever since.

I know that they brake up and form another band in the same year lol.

You can say that for 1993 but not for 1992, since Sean Dowdell and His Friends release their tape in 1993.

Tape has no date. :(

Was "1993" ever confirmed by Sean or Chester?

I remember when "Kill The Flies" + the Grey Daze demos were leaked, all the fan sites just wrote they were from "sometime between 1992 and 1994".

I always thought the tape was recorded in 1992.

Edit:

Grey Daze played in 1993:

Rob's high school jazz band- 1994/5

No Clue/Physical evidence- 1990/1

Source: Rob said while he was in his high school Jazz band then he was in 10th grade. While American teens are in 10th grade, they are 15-16 years old, 1979 + 15/16 = 1994/1995. The same with No Clue, Rob was in sixth grade, and children that go to 6th grade are usually 11-12, 1979 + 11/12 = 1990/1991

There are some contradictions, but, for some reason, I'm suspicious that there's something related is going on:

I wrote the guitar part for "What's in the Eye" and a few other songs at the time, and some experimental rock opera stuff with Chester and Jonathan.

Just wanted to point out a possibility.

So for now:

1992? - Sean Dowdell and His Friends?

1993? - Grey Daze

You can remove both question marks.

I just read that "Grey Daze story by Jonathan Krause" again and he said the band was founded by Sean and himself in 1993.

And from LESTAT's interview with Sean:

Has "Sean Dowdell And His Friends" ever played live? Where there enough songs to play? There are 3 original songs on the tape, and I believe someone once said that the song Wake Me is also originated from SDAHF.

Yes we played for well over a year and a half around the Phx area, probably 50-70 shows.

Wake me did not originate from SDAHF. That was written by me, Chester and a guitar player named Jason Barnes.

Please, check out this picture: http://lplive.net/fo...5_829_11176.jpg

Is it Grey Daze or SDAHF? We figured out it's 1993 and it's Greenway High School. What are the other SDAHF songs the band played? Do you happen to remember any song titles?

It is SDAHF. I don't remember set lists like that. I'm sorry.

"Over a year and a half" and now we are 100% sure they broke up in 1993.

It's impossible that Sean Dowdell And His Friends formed and broke up in 1993. Even if the band formed in January of 2013, and they toured a year and a half it means they broke up in the middle of 1994.

He means that Grey Daze was formed in 1993 - a year and a half (or almost two years) after Sean Dowdell and His Friends was formed (1991-1992).

Krause wasn't in SDAHF so he was talking about Grey Daze when he said that the band formed in 1993.

Yes. Sorry if my post was confusing. Here's the full thing:

The story, as told by former member Jonathan Krause...

This the true story of how Grey Daze was created! Jonathan Krause and Sean Dowdell started the band back in 1993. Chester didn't join until a couple of months later. We tried out several singers. The first guitar player was not even Jason Barnes, it was a guy named Steve. Steve actually played 1 show live with us. Jason joined us after we decided to part ways with Steve. We were together for 4 months or so when Jason joined us.
Once established Jonathan, Sean, Chester, and Jason played together for almost 2 years. They also completed their first full length album "Wake Me" at the end of 94'. The song "She Shines' almost didn't make the album. Here is a video from one of our shows, notice how Chester points out this a brand new song. After the response we were certain to put it on the album. A couple of side notes. This was a collective writing band.
Someone would come in with an idea and the rest of the band would collaborate and help create the Grey Daze sounds. The music was brought in by everyone somewhat. There is some Grey areas (pardon the pun)! The truth is because Jason and I had the stringed instruments in our hand we were the ones coming up with the sounds of the songs. Every once and a while Chester would come in with an idea such as the song "Commit", (which I love) and we would write something around that. Jason and Jonathan did not write the lyrics, they were written by Chester and Sean and I guess that’s were a lot of problems stemmed from when they finally broke up.
The only song taken from Chester and Sean’s old band was "Wake Me". Everything else was made in Grey Daze! As a matter of fact Sean worked with Chester on the lyrics and put the beats to our songs. If you want to call suggesting notation whether or not putting an "A" or "A" minor, I suppose you could say Sean and Chester helped create the notation as well. Again, alot of Grey areas!
One last thing this band was conceived when I met Seans brother at work and he told me his brother had just broken up with his band "SD and his friends". At the time I had just left my band and called Sean after getting his number from his brother. We started Grey Daze and it had nothing to do with "SD and his friends". We had been searching for singers for sometime before Sean had suggested his old singer "Chester". The rest is history! Jonathan quit in 95' and along came Mace! I suppose Jason quit not too long after, and along came Bobby. I never saw them play after I left. But they sure made a name for themselves, and obviously Chester intrigued some people for them to offer the lead singer position of one very cool band. It is great to see someone you knew become that successful...

More about Mike:

Yeah, well pretty much we’ve been working with Mike [shinoda] as long as S.O.B. has been together and putting out music. We all started together, we used to do demos in his bedroom. Mike produced even on the first Styles Of Beyond record [2000 Fold], so us working together was such a natural thing and as far as what his role was on the album, we kind of just trust his direction on things. What we do is he’s the executive producer on the record and what that entails is us just doing a bunch of songs and listening back to them and him telling us which ones are good and which ones aren’t, what we should do with certain ones and just giving us a gang of notes. He was totally involved with it and then he also provided beats for us too. I forget all the ones he did on there but I know he did “Second To None.” He polished this record for us because we were on a major label when we did this, we couldn’t just necessarily go in there and do 68-bar verses on every song and no hooks and stuff like that so it had to be somewhat acceptable for the label so he helped polish our sound a little bit.
