The Ultimate Working Titles Thread

Recommended Posts

I know we already have a thread for Living Things and another one for all the released material, but I made this list to include all the titles from studio boards and titles mentioned during interviews.
Suggestions about the list format are welcome.

There are more for the Meteora songs, check the Meteora song board in a thread in here.

There are 2 titles people couldn't figure out.

Blue of LPU11 is missing

I know "Blue" is labeled as "1998 Unreleased Hybrid Theory Demo" but it's impossible this date is right because Chester joined the band in 1999, so I put it under "1999-2000" along with "So Far Away", "Slip" and "She Couldn't" (which were labeled as being from 1998 as well).

How do you know all HT EP tracks have working titles that stuck? I think working titles for those songs are unknown

I don't. I just assumed it because that's how they are on demo CDs, but I think you might be right. Changed it.

Ā

I think Points Of Authority's demo title is Vertical Limit too.

Mike said POA is a working title that stuck.

Ā

Demo title of Crawling is Under Attack

On all the demo CDs we have it was called "Crawling". I don't think it was ever called "Under Attack".

Ok time for unnecesary speculation: I wonder what the song titles with dates meant, like 6.14.1997. Funny coincidence that the preview video for Guilty All The Same had the pad with "The Hunger Party 6.14" in it, but I doubt there is any connection.

"6.14.1997" was a joke. Chester was just making fun of Joe's demos all being titled based on the date they were created.

Does anybody knows when the Stagelight demos were created?

Ok. It's out.

Song C - You Don't Know

Is it possible that this was the demo of "What We Don't Know"? Edited by lpliveusername

Is it possible that this was the demo of "What We Don't Know"?

Bruiser and Space Station were likely done in between ATS and Living Things. Bruiser uses some of the guitar MPC samples that were recorded by Mike and Brad when they did Wretches and Kings (they really milked that sample bank for studio work, parts of it wound up in Wretches, Bruiser, and Victimized). Bruiser was originally bundled with the Open Labs software that came with the Dell Linkin Park Edition PC in mid-2012, and I'd assume Space Station was part of that as well. The Loop Jams are just composed of existing samples from other tracks. Complementary was done a little later, when Stagelight was released.

Ā

Song C/WWDK is a possibility, but no way of really knowing that for sure.

Added "Complementary". Moved "Bruiser" and "Space Station".

Were "Violent Lullaby" and "The Fog" actual titles from the A Thousand Suns sessions?

Ā

Edit:

Where should I leave "Ammosick" (from MTM and ATS sessions) and "Mikespiano" (from ATS and LT sessions)?

I'm leaving "Debris" under "2004-2007" because on LPU 12 it says "Minutes To Midnight Demo".

Ā

Edit:

No. "The Fog" was attributed to BITS because there's a point on Meeting of A Thousand Suns where Mike says something like "Let's listen to the five and see what we think," referring to a batch of five songs that the band was working on at that point. The song played immediately after that was BITS. Somebody misheard "the five" as "the fog," and we've had a non-existent working title floating around for 3 and a half years.

Ā

"Violent Lullaby" comes from the "Chester's Lullaby" LPTV episode, where him and Mike are throwing around ideas for lyrical revisions to The Catalyst. Chester comes up with the phrase "violent lullaby," and Mike proposes the idea of "If the last two words of the song are violent lullaby, and the song title is Violent Lullaby..." basically saying that he thinks they should use that phrase in the lyrics because he thinks it'd be a good title for the song. Chester counters that with "If you're forcing words into the song just for the sake of a good song title, you're writing for the wrong reasons." LP fans being LP fans (taking everything literally, not understanding the concept of "context," etc...), people assumed that "Violent Lullaby" was the song's working title based on this. The lyric was never used in the song, the "song title" conversation was entirely hypothetical, and the song was never called Violent Lullaby.

Ā

"Mikespiano" was a demo for both ATS and Living Things? I don't recall seeing that one mentioned more than once.

  • 2 weeks later...

"I don't know the name of" by Xero lol (from the LPUTV episode - Perth Jam 1, Xero Reborn).

This should be added actually because it seems the band all remembers the song, just not the title. Reminds me a little of the part of Fuse that starts at 2:22, could it be it and maybe Phoenix just wasn't playing it perfectly? We need Astat.

Is it really "Fuse"? (I haven't watched the video)

Yeah I know, the point of the thread is the names, I was just joking.

Ā

What is the source of Fuse and RME under 1999-2000?

You did bring up an interesting topic. The video is on YouTube, but I can't post it here because LPU videos are not allowed. Fuse & RME are from the Xero tape in 1997, not sure..
