I'm never a massive fan of explicit unless it's straight up gangsta rap. LP don't really need it.

I believe they once stated they thought cussing in songs were lazy; there was a better way of expressing yourself.

but they also said, about the descision to use swearing, that there are times when the most immediate reaction (to swear) is the most real and pure for a song. sure it's a "lazy" way to react to something like that but in terms of their lyrics it makes for a more abrasive, real quality.

I can't find the source but I'm sure it's chester who says this somewhere.

CHESTER - "sometimes dropping the f-bomb is necessary [...] when we were writing Given Up, it's always been very important for us - well it still is - we like to find the best way of explaining what we're feeling or what we're trying to describe, you know? in a lyrical way that isn't... cheap. and, so we try to do that. when we were doing the chorus for Given Up, Mike was just like "I really want to say something, that like, you would say, in real life." and so I did, some of those things that i said, we ended up changing the lyrics. but we felt like, it actually felt real, it felt very believable. and so then we we got the bridge we just literally kept that going. and so just out of nowhere I just started screaming "put me out of my misery" and that kind of came out, and you the 18 second long screma came, and all this energy came out of that, and it was like "we can't change that, how are we-?" Mike even said, like "we're never gonna convince the band that we can keep this" -"
MIKE (interrupting ) - "we actually, no, as I recall, it was the opposite way, because you and I had decided-. Here's the thing about our band: we've got a very - just like any other band - we've got a very interesting dynamic of these however many guys, and in our band, we tend to be the kind of guys that over-think things, we think things through very carefully and deliberately, and with alot of our lyrics on this record they were looked over and over again. and the point that we were doing this song - the scenario that Chester was talking about - we'd actually re-written the lyrics a whole bunch of times. and, you know, when the two of us decided "hey, what this needs, it needs these words" and we looked at each other like "this is never gonna fly" and the rest iof these guys are gonne be like "yeah you've re-written this five times? well guess what, you're on six now so-", and sure enough, we said "ok, let's just try, let's just go for it" and Chester's like, "man this is gonna be a waste of time" and I'm like "just go for it, maybe it'll work out". and he sang it and we were immediately convinced, we loved it. and as soon as the other guys heard it they knew too. there's just a time and a place to -was Rick Rubin in the room then?"
CHESTER - "no, i t was just us"
MIKE - "it was actually just the two of us at that point"
CHESTER - "we did most of the vocal work together, and then once we had something finalised, we felt was really close, we would take it to Rick and he would kind of give us... direction"
MIKE - "yeah, I'd say the band was - the band the other four guys - were harsher critics than Rick was-"
CHESTER - "for sure"
MIKE - "- for the lyrics"

Regarding swearing, it doesn't really matter to me either way. If Mike drops the f-bomb a few times in his verses, so be it. If Chester screams out "FUUUUUCK" once or twice, whatever. I don't understand the idea that not swearing is taking a high road of some sort. That's a pompous way of thinking. Music, good music, isn't highly processed, factory-made garbage. It's emotional, instinctual.

I hope those track times posted earlier end up being accurate. But if Mike said something else, then I'll take that too.

Hmm. Most likely fake considering its from wiki, although, I wouldn't be surprised if we get something similar after what Mike said about the "firecracker" record with short punchy songs.

And there was me thinking they'd go all out on the song lengths on this album I so longing for more LP songs over 4-5 mins. I don't wish this album to be a back step from ATS cause so far its sounding pretty damn good.

Meteora and ''best album'' shouldn't even be in the same sentence, I assume you're referring to HT and Meteora. I agree that sometimes, swearing totally brings out the most emotion of how you feel, and any time that LP has used swearing in the lyrics, it expressed emotion. (GU, BIO, HHH, WTCFM, Blackout, Wretches, etc).
